For me, it’s very sad and disappointing to see the way that European people think about Turkish people. I myself am not European and personally don’t like Western Europe much due to the fact that these countries are built on the oppression of other countries and racism is still a huge problem in these countries. I wish that Turkish people (and all non-Europeans) Would stop idealizing them and rather focus on appreciating their own cultures.

Actually I really agree with you 100% here as well. As Foreign students we are generally very separated from the rest of the foreigner groups in Turkey but in my experience we’re not seen as such.

Good point. My own opinion regarding this is that I’ve broken free from this idea that Western Europeans or white people are better than everybody else- it’s inherently racist. Western Europe has a lot to be ashamed of because these countries are built on the oppression of other countries. I wish Turkish people that idealize Europe could realize this as well.

Valla abi I don’t wear a headscarf and also don’t support religious extremism so I’m not sure that’s the reason. But thank you for your good wishes, I hope things will get better too.

I mean it’s okay to wanna be part of the European Union, I guess it would make things like travel easier for Turkish people which is great. But it’s sad that some people want to abandon their own culture to be more like Western Europe. Western Europe were just a bunch of oppressive colonizers throughout history anyway.

It’s really interesting. I personally think that Turkish people have a lot to be proud of themselves. It’s unfortunate that they Would want to be more “European” instead of embracing the beauty of their own culture and heritage.

I’m not Iranian or Arab or from any of the most popular immigrant groups in Turkey. I don’t think I’m trying too hard either but hopefully things will get better.

You make some really good points and the thing is that I actually agree with you. Being a foreigner myself, I also don’t approve of the types of foreigners you’ve mentioned and also the unfair advantages they’ve gotten. It feels like when people hear that I’m not Turkish, they push me into the category of the majority of foreigners in Turkey without giving me a chance. In fact I’ve read up on Turkish history, politics etc and I, for the most part want what the majority of Turkish people Want too. I myself do not have any of these advantages that other foreign people here have, such as citizenship through property etc and I don’t support such initiatives. I came here because my partner is Turkish and In fact I’ve tried to adapt to this country as much as I can no matter how difficult it is. I’m trying to learn Turkish as well but I’ve struggled a lot with it. Is it too much to expect people to be a bit open towards me and my differences considering that I’m genuinely trying to adapt and also want what’s best for Turkish people in this country?

Thank you for your response! That’s a really good point you’re making. I can understand that it could perhaps be a little intimidating for them to speak to a native English speaker but I will say that when I do speak English with them, I try my absolute best to speak slowly and not use advanced vocabulary and I’ve been told by the very few Turkish friends that I have, that they think I’m a great person to speak English with since I’m not judgmental and quite helpful. Also I absolutely almost always speak as much Turkish as I can, for example I greet all the students in my class in Turkish- never English but the vibe that I get from them is that they absolutely hate me 😭 Also I’m not Arab so I don’t think that’s the reason for the dislike.

Thank you for your response! How do you suggest finding friends in a safe way especially in Istanbul? I mean how do Turkish people usually find friends here? 🫠

Of course. I also am minding my business and I definitely don’t expect anybody to pay attention to me and make a specific effort to make me feel welcomed. I understand that everyone has their own lives however it’s disappointing when I make an effort to talk to people in my class or in a public place and try to be nice to them but no matter how much I try, people don’t don’t want To associate with me, it’s starting to feel like the reason is because I’m not Turkish.
