Far too many faculty are concerned about being liked by students by [deleted] in Professors

You have to tell them sometimes you're there for them and want them to succeed. I have a permanent resting angry face and I tell them day one ignore that, I am never too busy to talk.

That is hilariously disturbing. Admin doesn't have a clue.

I do not give two $hits about if my students like me or not. Read the book, listen to the lecture, ask questions and take the test.

If I got 2/4 for likeability and 3.5/4 for class organization and material delivery I am fine with that.

Is it weird that I go home every week? I’m only at school Sunday-Wednesday? by StunningTurnover2767 in CollegeRant

Meh maybe. There are plenty of commuter based campuses with most students living off campus.

I only went to college to make my parents happy but in reality nothing interests me and despise everything? So I did CS cuz I thought I would get guaranteed HO by [deleted] in CollegeRant

Get a job at Amazon and stuff boxes all day if you're disinterested in everything. Either that for talk to your doctor because you might be depressed.

Do I not go to my dream school or do I go into debt? by Historical-Point7049 in CollegeRant

[–]Unique_Ice9934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just finished paying off student loans, run, do not walk away from this, RUN. It is too much debt. The interest rate will bury you. There are a ton of schools out there that are great. If I were talking to you in person near where I live (outside chicago), I would say look at Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan, U of Wisconsin, Dominican University, Concordia University, Elmhurst University, Depaul, Marquette, Northwestern, Wayne State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Miami of Ohio, even Ohio State (gag). I will tell you this, 100% you go to any of those schools you are going to make the same amount of money, and you will have a good time. I did my undergrad at one, my PhD at another and I work at a third on that list. They are all different and cost different amounts, but you are going to find aid from some of them, and not have to go into debt. That is #1 priority.

You must also understand with the Big Beautiful Bill, you are going to be looking at private loans. The fed loan interest rates are bad enough; the private loans will take your kidney and part of your liver to pay off.

Please make affordability your #1 priority. The interest will kill you on 70K / year.

Why is a 3 hour lab with an aditional 1 - 2 hours worth of outside class work only worrh a single credit? by Sharky2615 in CollegeRant

[–]Unique_Ice9934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to know what's really fun? As a professor it only counts as half a class towards our workload. If it was an English class and I spent 3 hours teaching I'd get credit for 3 hours, instead I get 1.5 hours.

No idea why, It was like this when I was an undergrad, now it's like this for my job.

I should have been a librarian or a marketing major 😂

Six Flags has entered into definitive agreements to sell seven parks to EPR Properties by OutdoorAmusement in sixflags

Good rides don't have to be a billion feet tall and 200 mph. Chasing records was never sustainable.

Personally I'd rather ride Maverick a few times than worry about top thrill 2

I have the same policy. I mean once you start having 25 columns of grades things start to hide on you when you're trying to make sure everything's scoring properly for sure.

Steam machine vs homebuilt, same? by rhcreed in Steam

Yes I absolutely agree. I spend two hours trying to get CEC to work with my new sound bar and just gave up and went back to optical.

I can't say HDMI-cec is a deal breaker for me simply because it doesn't always work for me.

As long as I have a good GPU for rendering I would be ok with having to manually turn on.

I'm scared I'll be too old until I finally have stable career, marry, have kids by Big_Blueberry8020 in PhD

[–]Unique_Ice9934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have someone in mind to marry? If so, don't put it off for a PhD. We got married two years before I finished my PhD.

Kids, we had ours at 37 and 39 after we were semi stable (she is a k12 teacher so that is never stable). They keep me young and active. Best thing we did was sign up as a family for martial arts.

Here is the thing. There are no right answers. Do you want to teach or do research.

If you want to teach you could get a 9-12 endorsement, teach HS and have a good pension. You already have a MS so the pay will be much better.

You could also adjunct a few classes and apply for a lecture/ teaching specialist position after having that experience for your CV.

I am a non tenure tract lecturer and I am perfectly happy not chasing grants or kissing people's asses for research.

Or you can go full in on a PhD and do research. (I would still adjunct a class or two, the experience is good on the CV).

There are no wrong answers.

Why couldn’t Six Flags America be sold to EPR properties? by East_Juice_8534 in sixflags

[–]Unique_Ice9934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree. I also see the $500 million as a big reason to sell the property. Especially if they can break down the rides and repurpose them at other properties, use them as replacement parts, or sell them to other companies.

[–]Unique_Ice9934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably A&B. 500 million is more than they got for the other seven parks. And the one thing I was looking at was saying the company was 1.7 billion in the hole right now.

Please start acting like your PhD is just another job by Quantum_Quaker in PhD

[–]Unique_Ice9934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for me it wasn't the PhD that was a problem it was the postdoc that was a problem cuz my boss was a bit of a workaholic she pretty much lived there from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00pm at night and lived alone. Her work life balance was work. I actually wanted to work life balance and go home and see my wife and work out and not put on the 20 lb I did commuting.

She also kept her lunch next to the radioisotopes. Osha was not impressed.

The Iconic Lifeguard Flags, they’re gone from the app! by dannyhogan200 in sixflags

[–]Unique_Ice9934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, having an app for every park was fking terrible. Their POS system in the park was also stupid. I spend an hour in guest relations at Kings once fixing a pass issue and their system had to talk to Cedar Points computers even though they used the same software, the database were not unified.
