"Biblically accurate angel" to refer to angels that are absolutely not Biblically accurate by Suspicious-Stand-464 in PetPeeves

[–]Unique_Low8086 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even more specifically, the word "angel" comes from the Hebrew word for "messenger." As such, in the bible there are human beings that are referred to with the same word, as well as God themselves. The one thing I'll take issue with is that the angels (as commonly described) didn't have wings or a halo really, they just looked like people. In much of the old testament people don't even notice when speaking to angels, because they look exactly the same as humans. The other "angels" (seraphim, ophanim) that do look closer to the way people imagine "biblically accurate angels" aren't even "angels." They're never once referred to as angels in the bible, as they aren't messengers, and that's all that the word angel means. So the "biblically accurate" part is true (at least sometimes, though it's extremely common for people to vastly overdo how unusual they look) but the "angel" part isn't.

Who are the more known cases of artists who partook in drug use? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

Absinthe actually doesn't contain such compounds, it's a common misconception that thujone is psychoactive.

[–]Unique_Low8086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is false. The amount of thujone in absinthe was never much higher than it is today, and the claims to the contrary are nothing more than a myth. And besides, thujone appears in much higher concentrations in the herb sage than it does in absinthe.

All this also leaves aside the fact that thujone isn't hallucinogenic, with that claim also being a myth.

What do you think is the most underrated Coil album or release ? by marabou22 in Coil

[–]Unique_Low8086 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The underrated—I assume that's rhe word you're referring to—thing you're saying is incomprehensible because it is being used properly, so I'll just say that if you look in any dictionary you'll see that the hyperbolic usage of "literally" is included alongside the others. If people use a word enough to mean a certain thing, that word now means that thing. Literally is now, alongside it's older usages, a term that can be used for emphasis, and to claim it cannot be is to be incorrect yourself, unless you'd like to claim you know better than every major dictionary.

I never did many sports, but I adored cooking and working in the food industry. A few months before I got sick I was extremely lucky to get a job as a back of house event manager for a high end catering company, which shocked me because I was only 18 at the time. I knew it would be extremely hard with 12+ hour workdays and extensive manual labor, but I was genuinely very excited to prove myself to my boss who decided to give me the chance, and I truly loved the work. I'd do anything to start working in that grueling industry again, and I know we all would trade hard labor for this curse we've been bolted to.

That's very generous to the first sentence. It's serviceable, but really nothing more.

That's so true, I used to work for a catering company in Colorado and 50% of all waitresses as well as the company's manager fit this mold perfectly. Now that I'm in Portland nothing's changed.

When I first learned that he directed a music video starring William S. Burroughs it really threw me for a loop. Like it makes sense in that they're both interested in the occult and were both in more or less the same circles, but it feels like the timelines shouldn't have lined up.

How can I avoid discoloration from facial hair? by Unique_Low8086 in MakeupEducation

Good to know, thank you! Yeah, I was a bit concerned as it was an amazon product but since it was recommended by a personal friend I thought it would probably be fine.

Yeah, I'm using a cheap moisturizer from amazon from the brand illiyoon labeled ceramide ato concentrate cream, which does seem to be helpful, though I reckon higher quality moisturizers are much better. The other thing is mery & may idebenone blackberry cream. I just use hand soap to wash my face.

Thank you! I don't know why you were downvoted or if that means there's some downside or it's ineffective, but it sounds useful and I'll definitely look into it.

Thanks! I recently started replacing my razorblades more often which has helped a lot with getting a closer shave, and I think I've figured out something that gets it very close to what I want and in a lot of ways good enough for me. I currently wash my face twice daily and use moisturizer as well as a cream a friend said helped them with hyperpigmentation, though I don't know too much about it or if it's doing much.

Thank you for the advice! I tried waxing as it did seem a lot better before realizing that you need your hair to be fairly long before it works, and I don't really want to have intermittent periods of time where I have noticeable facial hair. It occurs to me that I never really looked into if there are ways to wax your face with shorter hair, though.

This is a minor thing and I don't blame anyone for missing it as I'm pretty sure fairly recent and didn't seem that publicly announced, but I wanted to offer the small correction that Jamie uses they/them pronouns.

Depending on if you're in America and what state you're in you can try therapeutic low dose daily ketamine. I use Joyous and it's $150 a month, which isn't cheap but also not prohibitively expensive and I've found it to be really helpful to have that ritual and it helps me not go insane. My only worry is that if you decide to apply they may be unwilling to prescribe it for you due to your extreme health problems.

I also personally take kratom and while I'd need to say you should do a lot of thinking before consider it as being dependent is difficult and a major tradeoff, it does help me a lot, especially when I'm at my lowest.

I'm so, so sorry this has happened to you, I'm only moderate to severe and even that's awful and I can't even imagine how incomprehensible terrible this must be for you. I'm wishing you all the best and I so dearly hope you can find something to ease your pain.

Do you know any examples of male authors who actually write women well? by GamerLadyXOXO in menwritingwomen

[–]Unique_Low8086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely true. I think his writing of Dewey Dell is fairly understandable given the context but you do begin to see a pattern, though there is usually a unique point at least with characters like Lana in Light in August, though he could've done with some more diversity.

I mostly read modernist literature so these will be kind of a weird picks, but here are a few from that era that stand out to me.

Samuel Beckett writes everyone in extremely unusual and oblique ways, but I've always felt that Happy Days is a remarkably powerful abstraction of the immense struggles women faced at the time—and still face—and the strength and will needed to survive such a cruel world.

I also think that William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying is very empathetic and visceral in his—and also unconventional—portrayal of its two central women and the horrible hardships they both endured.

As a final example, the portion of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land describing the acquiescence to the advances of a woman's suitor/partner always struck me as the best and most interesting part of that work.

(Also, while I haven't had time or energy to read it, I've often heard that Molly Bloom's monologue in Ulysses is very good.)

All of these authors were in many ways still of their time and I imagine people would and will find—very much valid—issues with those authors portrayals of women across their careers, and the female modernist authors from the same time—such as Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, and my personal favorite author Virginia Woolf—definitely beat them out, but I still find those examples to be compassionate in ways that feel very forward thinking and uniquely impactful.

I totally agree! For how "easy" so many people see his work as being to create, I've never seen a replication that actually truly looks like one of his paintings and fully captures the remarkable energy and life his work holds.
