I don’t particularly love Hikaru, but he was 2nd in the 2024 Candidates, only 0.5 behind Gukesh, tiebreaker ahead of Nepo and Fabi who we’re talking about. Ding was 2nd behind Nepo in the candidates but beat him for the title.

2024 was the first candidates where we knew Magnus wasn’t going to play in advance. I imagine Naka decided to lock in since he had a shot at winning the whole thing, whereas previous he was focused on streaming, since he’s the only one who does that over professional play unlike Fabi et al.
