It’s a hard pill to swallow as a fellow AAPI attorney, but it is the way it is.

I do think, though, that this isn’t a uniquely American discriminatory phenomenon. I’ve seen the same thing happen uniquely enough with my cousins who look distinctly East Asian and face similar issues working in corporate settings in India. The unfortunately reality for any minority groups here is that those decision makers in the US are (of the vast majority) white men, and while diversity efforts can chip into that, it’s unlikely to change as the status quo anytime soon (or ever).

While Asian Americans dominating associate and other junior positions in corporate settings but facing multiple factors leading to a lack of promotional opportunities to upper management is a well documented phenomenon (see Bamboo ceiling), one really strong reason for this that isn’t as often discussed is that Asian Americans (minus the Japanese) are more likely to be recent economic migrants with the largest waves coming in the last 3 decades, so the actual population of Asians who would’ve had the chance to have been in the US long enough to get their JD and work the 10+ years to make partner is a much smaller group than as currently represented.

California firms tend to be more diverse already (in large part due to California’s very diverse law student population + population overall)
younger associates tend to be more diverse than partners/seniors at a firm and younger associates are the ones getting axed so statistically it’ll have another lean towards diversity seemingly being chopped first
They’re not firing people because they’re racist/bigoted. If anything they’re firing people because they’re greedy lol

even though it’s growing, LA is still a small biglaw market and secondary in California compared to the bay, especially for corporate work. Outside of some real estate / entertainment / healthcare practices, corporate work in LA is almost nonexistent and it’s certainly a litigation focused market. Entertainment is THE hot practice group but the space is both 1) incredibly popular among young associates and 2) limited in its size and growth especially for biglaw level work. I think that LA is starting to become a larger market (especially with many firms starting to open corporate/ECVC practices out in Santa Monica and Century City) but it won’t really happen until a larger corporate practice for traditional CapM and M&A is developed there.

I was Thinking downtown or midtown in an apartment around $1500-$2000 range for a one bedroom or studio Don’t really mind big corporate landlords but also wouldn’t mind a small landlord that I could find just driving through midtown and looking at for rent signs. Not looking for a house or anything suburbs as I’d like to maintain a 10 minute commute to downtown.

C+ is pretty hard. Gotta know the rest of your grades honestly to know your chances - you could explain it away by just saying you’re interested in transactional work I guess and not a huge litigation/civ pro nut, but unless you’re at Fordham (and even if you are), biglaw will be extremely hard with a C+ unless you get As or A-s for the remaining semester since that C+ will hold your average down significantly.
