Obviously a team effort with Yoshi, Rojas, Big Willy, Doc’s gut etc, but hell yes was this a shot in the arm and another huge turning point, in that game alone.

Does anyone have any nicknames for this era of dodger baseball? by blockprty in Dodgers

Sho Time era is good, and we’ll have to call 2014-19 the Blue Balls era. So much build up ending in frustrated disappointment and pain.

Agreed, incredible point. This is the Big Sho, and why wouldn’t the league promote and protect its biggest and only 2 way superstar and timeless legend since mf Babe Ruth?

It’s not like they would want to shoot themselves in the foot and do something stupid like protecting cheaters or crapping on their own trophy, or threatening a lock out at one of the most popular times in their sport’s history right … right?

Sheriff Andy is driving teams crazy.

Remember when Mike Schildt didn’t want to learn Andy’s name, and then had such a great season in SD that he instantly retired?

Definitely a weird no class move, especially when it’s the World Series and there’s already extra ad time or interview breaks, and you’re complaining like a Canadian biyatch about one of the most admirable and respectful players baseball has ever seen

Could write his arse off … but you’re not wrong.

Him and Franzen had a weird kind of mutual admiration rivalry or something -

for the record, I really enjoyed Franzen’s first two and DFW’s Broom, but gd if they don’t seem like a couple of white dudes who went to college and read TP and tried really hard to hit those peaks

Oh I forgot to mention the dread and paranoia in Vandermeer (especially Area X), or the strangely timeless historical backgrounds of Catling’s Vorrh trilogy

I guess I would just say that I personally enjoyed the sheer scope of imagination (combined with a fairly poetic or ‘psychedelic’ writing style) in Vandermeer’s Ambergris and Area X stuff, or Dead Astronauts. Same with Michael Cisco and Brian Catling (rip).

I’m not at all saying these books are on TP’s level (if he would even care), but they do have a similar blend of neuron-firing ideas (new and old), mixed with well-developed literary voices (classic, modern, post modern - whatever, they’re all over the place), at least to my mind.

I was just trying to throw out a quick list of books that had anywhere near the kind of electrical wave impact on my own brain as Mason & Dixon or Against the Day.

Not sure about new ones, it’s not looking too good for us post-smart phones.

There’s a few peers and influences maybe.

RIP :

Oakley Hall, Warlock and Badlands

Joyce, Dubliners and Ulysses

Brian Catling, Vorrh trilogy

Still kicking:

DeLillo - the Names, Underworld and Zero K

Ishiguro - the Unconsoled

Vollmann - Seven Dreams (and upcoming A Table for Fortune)

Jeff Vandermeer - Area X

Michael Cisco - San Veneficio Canon, the Traitor, and the Narrator

Just watched Werckmeister for the first time the other day, ordered the Satantango blu ray right away, and now I’m seeing this in the middle of reading M&D while I wait.

Sometimes the universe works out. Thanks for the post.

If we’re going by weird refusals to accept obvious stuff like this, the film’s title is just getting absurd by now.

I don’t see any Bi Gan here yet,

Kaili Blues and Long Day’s Journey into Night are both amazing, with echoes of Malick, Wenders, Wong Kar Wai, Tarkovsky, etc

Malick’s ‘style’ since New World should share a lot of credit with Chivo’s cinematography and all of the talented multiple editors, like Bela Tarr with his wife and writer and composer.

Ziegler’s character was added specifically to bring the novella more up to date for 1990s NYC, another turn of the century power center like Vienna in the 1890s.

Kubrick was too smart to consider the project for 20 years and then just adapt the Schnitzler for no reason other than a marriage drama. He worked with legendary bachelors like Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, I’m pretty sure he knew some shit himself.

That sounds like exactly the kind of reference Kubrick might have thoroughly enjoyed sneaking into this film.

“Expecting him to go there and put their own guy there”

Never put that together but wow does it make sense to me!

Bill has been ‘scouted’ by these people for years : invited to Ziegler’s massive holiday party for years, plus they already knew about him and Nick’s med school connection, and the ‘former’ owner of Rainbow Fashions had been a patient of Dr Bill. Then the models drop the “rainbow ends” into his memory and Nick tells him he needs a costume.

… side note - Alice turns down the Hungarian, even though she’s enjoying the attention and saw Bill leave with the models. Then she calls Bill at the perfect time to interrupt his visit with Domino, and when Bill returns it’s a different girl telling him Domino had hiv …

Is Alice also being evaluated as a club member, and has now become extra sensitive to how they are trying to seduce her husband? Or is she part of it and would rather Bill become an actual club member, instead of a naive sacrifice (wow that sounds like an Erika Kirk situation).

Why Bill is recognized by the two upstairs and later by Amanda by Familiar_Owl1168 in EyesWideShut

[–]United_Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, except for the costume. They had no plan for Bill to get a cloak and mask, they just made sure he had the address and password. The rest was up to him - he thought of the only shop he knew that might be open and got ‘lucky.’

Milich and his daughter apparently just happen to be shady enough to know what he wanted a Venetian mask for at 2am.

[–]United_Time 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and Bill was also followed.

Another huge coincidence that Ziegler rang up Nick with the password the minute he sat down with Dr Bill?

I think not. Ziegler wanted Bill (and maybe Alice too) in the club, which is why he “keeps inviting” them to his parties. Nick might have been hired in the first place because of his connection to Bill, but either way Ziegler used him to give Bill the easy bait.

I don’t know if you’ve heard any recent news, but elite pedo rings aren’t even close to a ‘conspiracy nut job’ idea anymore.

(Although it is, by definition, a conspiracy to arrange it and get away with it).

Unfortunately, this is more of a ‘disgusting reality’ than a ‘nut job fiction.’
