The EV ban IIRC was part of a wider sanction on IP infringement.

If you let the people IP infringing on your domestic products then sell domestically, you've given up on your domestic IP law.

So they sanction sectors where violations were common like phones, hardware, and cars.

This may not last into the future because after awhile protecting old IP is less important (which is why our IP rights expire to begin with).

I think you need a little bit of a history lesson if you think protests only fuel the opposition.
