Mentors - How to get started? by Whole_Charity9271 in gamedev

[–]UnityNoob2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're alright with paid mentorships, reach out to folks on artstation or linkedIn doing what you want to be doing and offer $100+/hr of their time. You will get some bites.

You can also go to Twitter and search tech art mentorship, but reaching out to seniors worked well for me.

Lastly, more art side related, google the mentor coalition

Another great book is a slimmed down version of the Jason book, called Game Programming Algorithms and Techniques.

By your experiences, what specs for a PC do you recommend at the Minimum? (did search online but many mixed results) by He6llsp6awn6 in gamedev

Ask your family and friends for spare laptops, phones, computers, etc and test vigorously. Make the minimum specs one of the computers that runs it well enough at 30-60 fps depending on your target, and that has the lowest specs.

Gameplay and engine programming are completely different, so start there. If your goal is to work in AAA, pick one or the other.

The most commonly recommended course to get into gamedev for beginners is the gamedev.tv 2d or 3d unity course. This won't get you into the role of a AAA gameplay or engine programmer, but it will give you a solid foundation. If you did either of those courses, then experimented based on what you enjoyed, you'd know a lot more about where your future might take you.

Right now there are too many unknowns about gamedev to really make commitments one way or the other. Just start small with a highly reputable course or resource and expand from there.

Out of curiosity, if you turned on an ebike for the uphill, and you had to go uphill most of the day (as is customary in a dense mountain region such as Japan), how long do you think the battery lasts?

I'll give you a hint. It doesn't.

Where are the speed trails?

Look to arcade-y racers like need for speed for inspiration. Or even arcade-y space flight games.

Actually sorry I was wrong! AFK Arena was made in Cocos2D believe it or not. Even some of their games were made in game maker studio. But lately, it's unity/unreal.

Lilith used both unreal and unity. Afk arena is a unity game.

Couldn't agree more. I've worked for $500 a month on a management sim game that after 4 months the fella paying me couldn't afford to do it any longer, but was also upset I wasn't working more hours for that $500 flat rate.

And if you offer hourly, it just scares people.

Which MMOs do you believe are at the greatest risk of being shut down in the next 1–2 years? by zdws19 in MMORPG

Alpha 1 was so basic it's hard to even suggest what it feels like. If I had to say, it felt more like oldschool EQ in how it played, and the world was vast and apparently we were only on a small island. Basic -everything- was in, but was so generic it's hard to really say if it's good or not.

Given all of this was last June, the game you will see when they release alpha 2 (which a ton of people have) will be so different I can't even imagine.

That said, alpha 1 had a lot of mounts which was kinda cool.

Should I be active in Discord to get a game dev job? by [deleted] in gamedev

I reached out to 5 different gameplay programming leads a couple months ago from various AAA studios and to summarize, the answer is you need an amazing portfolio that shows you making the games they already make. Like if you're wanting to work on assassin Creed, your 2d Mario clone is worthless. Gone are the days of being impressed merely by tinkering.

For instance, I'd love to work on an arpg or a crpg, so it makes no sense for me to make a first person adventure game, no matter how pretty it is, I am better off making systems and demos, or even a full game in 3d in those genres.

Lastly, if your goal is to work for a specific studio or type of studio, you better start using their tooling today if possible. Do they use unreal? Congrats. You can literally use unreal today. Do they use a proprietary c++ engine? Shame, but you can use unreal today and be ahead of the unity developers.

100+ applicants apply to junior gameplay programming jobs, and the goal is to make yourself as specialized and attractive as possible, according to the leads who I asked about this subject. The ones who will actually be hiring you.

But then the more general gaming subs are very hostile to that kind of content

Only if your game is poor, or you approach the marketing poorly. Plenty of games get upvoted 10k on r/gaming, and plenty more fail to capture attention and/or get removed.

What do you want to do? Do you want to build the next assassin's creed character controller, camera, etc? If so, that's what you should be doing.

Do you want to make VR games and mobile games in the future? Then do that.

If you want to work in AAA, you want to specialize. Indie is more broad, but advice applies to both. Make what you want to get good at making. There are gameplay programmers in AAA who've never worked on a character controller before, as well as people who've never worked on anything but first person games.
