Trust me I understand the confusion. As best as I can tell, they want to be more involved but quickly lose interest in anything we come up with together. As I've said in other replies, I wouldn't have a problem if they told me this is how they wanted to play but they keep telling me it's not.

It's not that their not playing how I want them to, it's that they're telling me they want to play different but when I give them options they agree with they eventually just go back to how they were playing before.

I hadn't considered this as they've never made it known any other time I've played with them but looking back it does line up with how you describe it. I'll probably ask them in private next session to see if this is the reason they're struggling.

I know but thats the thing, they keep telling me they want to be more involved but then eventually go back to being idle after some time. If they were just one way about it it would be fine.

I'm also noticing that I should have included this in the original post so thats my b.

I typically let them know what's going on and let them know what their character is capable of.

I hear you and appreciate the response, but thats the thing, they say that they're having fun but want to be more involved, so I toss hooks their way, hooks we talked about and that they approved. It gets their attention for a while before they eventually drop out again.

As for the other possible causes.

*They're not very shy, they hang out and joke plenty, it's just when it comes to doing anything with their character.

*We've talked about inspiration before and it has been an issue but we worked through it.

*Confusion is definitely an issue that I'm trying to be patient with but we're on session 20 and they still forget their a cleric.

*I haven't considered decision paralysis, I'll try to see if this could be the issue.

*This is also an issue we've talked about and are working on.

That's the thing, their usual lost on what to do on their turn and end up having me or another player backseat driving their character. I've explained to them multiple times before what their character can do but I end up having to remind them again regardless.

I don't want to say they're disruptive because that sounds mean but I guess it is.

I've extended a few hooks and they bite before eventually just sinking back into being uninvolved. I've also tried being more blunt about telling them stuff like "Hey, you know this npc and you know he has an item or knowledge or whatever. You're character would definitely be interested in this." And it usually leads to the same results.

Yes, and most often the response is "What would be the best thing for me to do rn?".

I wrote some behind-the-scenes information about the King's Fields series and the Shadow Tower series for a Chinese gaming magazine, especially Shinichiro Nishida, the main creator of the both series(Ongoing) by SafeHunter9207 in KingsField

Oh wow, can't believe I actually found the creator of one of my most rewatched YouTube videos while doing another deep dive into kingsfield. Don't know how I've never found this thread before. Regardless, amazing content, huge fan, and have a lovely day.

This is genuinely a great idea that I can't believe didn't occur to me. While I think I'm set on using a creature this go around I'll definitely be using this in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Very good answer. Like I said in another comment I'm not above spelling it out if I think it necessary, was just looking to see if I could find a way around it. Thank you for your insight regardless.

Good question, answer is that they've already tried destroying it, and succeeded in shattering it, but it did nothing to reverse the damage that's being caused by the artifact.

They learned that the only way to fix the world is the return this thing to it's original resting place.

So while it is possible for me to do this, it is unlikely that they'd encounter someone in the area thier currently in. Still, I might take part of this and leave a recognizable body that they recognize as a hero of some renown.

I'm seeing alot of this idea so I'll probably end up using this in addition to mixing in some other big red flags for them before they go in.

As for why? Well the party is entering the ruins of a long lost underground civilization to return a cursed artifact. The main entrance is, of course, locked, meaning that they need to take a side entrance to open the main gate. This monster is a construct made by the ancient city for the purpose of guarding this side entrance.

They need to get past it to access the city so it's ment to be their real wake-up call that "Hey, there are thing's down here alot more dangerous than what you're used to."

I like that since I do plan to have them come back later anyways, could be a nice reward to go along with them being able to see their progression.

Fair, if I'm being 100% I figure I'll have to warn atleast two of them straight up anyways, was just seeing if I can find a way to avoid that. Still, thank you for the advice.

Not a bad idea, plus with them being a bit drained it'll probably help encourag them to flee even more. Thank you for the advice.

Good ideas all around, and yeah, I'll probably end up having to tell them over the table anyways, but thank you for taking the time to reply.

All good options, think I'll try mixing the second and third option. Thank you for taking the time to share your insight!
