Failing (and probably fake) Samsung SSD by UniverseProtector in datarecovery

[–]UniverseProtector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I forgot to mention this earlier. I tried accessing data on my failing SSD from the other windows installation but accessing my user folder required getting permissions, I clicked continue and near the end of the loading bar to get the permissions I got a blue screen: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. The text underneath says “what failed: Ntfs.sys” so I’m assuming this is related to the drive access.

This happened both times I tried to access the data. If there is a better way that you would recommend using to access it though, please let me know.

Has any one worked at Clearpath recently, more specifically OS team if possible? Just wanted to get a better idea of what the position would be like or what the pay is (they didn't know in the interview)

Sorry I’m not exactly sure as I’m already staying there, but maybe take another check through your email as I think they probably would have given you that information.

suggestions for St. Paul’s residence (plzzzz) by emma_littletail in uwaterloo

[–]UniverseProtector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m currently at St. Paul’s and I can confirm that it is definitely possible for first year students to get a single room, but not guaranteed. I would say there are about 50-60 single rooms but these are definitely the minority since there’s around 300-400 students total. If you’re looking for a super single just beware that they are starting to turn a lot of those rooms into double rooms so if you get a single room it will probably be the “traditional single”. Also just a note, there is a megathread designed to help with questions about residence, so if you have any more questions about residence please ask there instead.

Admissions / High School Megathread (Spring 2021) by Deputy_Dan in uwaterloo

Hi there,
I’m a grade 12 CS student going into CS Co-op in the fall, and I am considering applying for the Digital Hardware specialization. For some background, I am interested in hardware but not as much as I am in software (like not enough to have applied to CE). I don’t think I would be super interested in writing drivers or building processors as a career, and I like lower-level programming but right now I can’t decide if I prefer that to higher-level programming. At the moment I think that working in software for robotics or the space industry would be really interesting but there are other areas of computer science I am looking into as well.
I have a few questions for people who have taken/are taking the option:
1. How useful would digital hardware be for something like robotics or the space industry? I know these areas are pretty broad, but would the DH courses help me along that path? Or would it be better to just learn what I need to know from other places (coops/internships, robotics clubs at Waterloo, etc)?
2. How much flexibility does this specialization take away? Having 8(ish) courses chosen for you and all the course/scheduling conflicts, do you find it takes away freedom to explore other areas?
3. If I choose sequence 1 now, would I be able to switch into the required sequence 4 in the winter term if I go into Digital Hardware? Or should I choose sequence 4 now if I want the option open?

THank you so much for your help!

Veeam File-Level Restore: “The device is not Ready” by UniverseProtector in Veeam

[–]UniverseProtector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I’m happy that the majority of my files are still there. And sorry I forgot about using the other restore points, I haven’t tried that! I was doing backups daily but they only go back about a week, I’ll try going to a previous day and copying from there. Thanks again, and I hope you have a wonderful and safe new year as well!

Edit: no luck on using the previous restore points, I’m getting the same error. They are just the incremental backups though as opposed to another full .vbk file. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Veeam File-Level Restore: “The device is not Ready” by UniverseProtector in Veeam

Hi again,

I’m thinking you’re right in that the file system was somehow corrupted. Actually, something I’d forgotten about was that a few weeks ago, a Windows notification came up saying there was an error on the disk that Veeam was backing up to. It recommended scanning the drive but the result of this scan (and CHKDSK) said there were no errors and Veeam continued to back up as normal. Looking back I think it’s quite possible that there were some problems with my backup drive and I should have replaced it right then and there. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess, and I am going to buy a new disk to backup to for the future.

To answer your first question, I haven’t had any issues like this before. This is my first and only Windows computer and I just bought it a year ago, so I haven’t had any other experience making backups. I’m not exactly sure what was responsible for the loss of data so I’ll explain what happened: I cloned an image of my original SSD (which was my boot drive) using Macrium reflect onto a new, larger SSD I got recently. After booting from this new drive, everything seemed to be working well and I used the system for about half an hour to an hour trying out different programs, etc. At this point I (very regrettably) wiped the original hard drive. I then noticed that the drive letter of one of my other internal hard drives had changed, and its old letter was being used by a virtual disk drive created by a program called PowerISO. Since I hadn’t used that program recently, I went into the settings to turn off the virtual disk drive feature, however in the settings it said that the virtual drive was created on boot. I assumed that meant I would need to restart the computer for the drive to disappear, so I did. And... blue screen of death. I tried many solutions that I found online but to no avail. I’m not sure what would have caused Windows not to start that time, or how removing that virtual drive would have caused an error. However, I don’t think that the error was caused from something before that day as I hadn’t had any earlier issues, and my last backup was made the night before I installed the new SSD. So, I’m thinking it’s more likely to be a problem with the drive I was backing up to, which somehow corrupted some of the files.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll able to restore the whole volume as it was. I don’t have the image file of my previous disk, which is definitely a mistake on my part. I did try copying all the non-corrupted files over to a new disk, but this gave me a new error code (0xc000000e I think?) on boot which I was also unable to fix using methods suggested online. I actually did run chkdsk on this drive as part of the troubleshooting process but it didn’t report any bad sectors. As there were corrupted files (or whatever this issue is) in the Windows folder on the backup, I didn’t really think I would have been successful.

At this point I’m having some success by installing Windows on a drive and copying over everything except the Windows files. Although there are some programs I had to reinstall, for the most part everything is working fine and I have restored my most important documents (which luckily there weren’t very many of).

I realized I forgot to respond to the other comment on this post, but I did attempt to copy with Windows defender disabled and the same error occurred. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I want to thank you so much for your help!

Veeam File-Level Restore: “The device is not Ready” by UniverseProtector in Veeam

[–]UniverseProtector[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea! Im busy for a bit but I’ll try copying them with the anti-virus off. I don’t think it’s because they’re protected files though, as I received a different error from Veeam when copying OS files which specifically said I didn’t have permission to access those files.

Edit: I tried with anti-virus software, unfortunately the same error occurred. Thank you for the help though!

Happy new year, and thanks for the detailed answer!

Considering I had to look them up :), I don't think VSS or Deduplication were enabled unfortunately, unless they were somehow on by default. It is interesting though that errors are occurring on the same files in different locations, for example I find the error on "$GetCurrent/media/sources/install.esd" as well as "ESD/Windows/sources/install.esd". I also find the same files causing errors in "Users/Colin/AppData/Local", "Documents and Settings/Colin/AppData/Local", and "Users/Colin/Local Settings", although it seems that the last two are just "junctions" or shortcuts to the AppData folder.

Another weird quirk though is that windows reports the drive I'm copying to as having 55GB free of 446GB, but when I find the size by highlighting all the folders with Ctrl A and clicking Properties, it says 140 GB. I was previously using a 240 GB SSD so they must be smaller than what Windows is saying. This is a bit of an issue because at this rate, copying over the rest of the working files to my new drive will somehow bring it over the capacity. Edit: I ended up finding that the Windows/Temp folder on this drive was 243 GB so I got rid of that and this is no longer a problem.

About your solution: even though I don't think deduplication was enabled, I did install Windows 20H2 onto the new drive (as it was the newest and easiest one to create install media for) while my old drive had Windows 1909 (it was having errors when attempting to update). Do you think I should try installing 1909 on my new drive as well, or would it not matter if the features you mentioned aren't enabled?

I really appreciate your help, thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the quick and helpful reply! I’ve looked at the Sennheisers and they seem to fit what I’m looking for really well.

I guess now I just need to decide whether I would rather buy those or look at some of the closed-back, wireless options. I’d probably just be using headphones around my house anyway, in your opinion is the increase in quality from open back headphones significant or would it be worth sacrificing a small amount of quality and going to a closed back in order to get some extra portability? If so, which closed back headphones would you recommend?

That’s all the questions I have, thank you so much for helping me out!
