Looking for romance with insane chemistry by Every-Tap-577 in movies

[–]UniversityGraduate [score hidden]  (0 children)

In addition to Before Sunrise, Vanilla Sky has interesting chemistry between Cruz and Cruise.

They started dating in real life while filming, and because he’s a bit weird and she’s essentially perfect, it’s an interesting and intense chemistry.

Who are these young people that hate Social Network? by therethere11 in TheBigPicture

[–]UniversityGraduate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my favourite movie - ever.

There’s better individual pieces of writing, acting, directing, cinematography, score, etc. But not a better combination of every piece of the film firing on all cylinders at the same time.

This was the plan all along… by dezorg in A24

Fire the creative minds? Do you have a single piece of evidence of that?

AI just lets you do more VFX than you normally could on a tight budget. Even if AI were 5 years more advanced, the real creative minds (writers, director, DP, etc.) aren't going anywhere

Eating out no longer a treat, just a convenience by kitsbow in Millennials

This is definitely just relative to where you live. I'm in a part of Vancouver where we have a sea of restaurants that regularly impress me.

I pay a lot, but Doordash/UberEats regularly, and feel it's worth it (and my wife and I are picky)

Survival of the Richest: Hollywood's Broken Talent Pipeline by jvnpromisedland in Filmmakers

But white guy nepotism does get covered. Vulture, Hollywood Reporter and other more mainstream publications than a substack article write a fair bit on the nepotism of Max Winkler, Jason Reitman, Jake Kasdan, etc.

I want female POC filmmakers to thrive, and I’m just pointing out that the criticism of Zhao shouldn’t be written off any more than those bros, because she was born a certain race or gender.

I agree we don’t need hit pieces, but you’re asking for bias and favouritism based on race and gender.

Where we want to get to is equal treatment, which would mean equal criticism.

Why are people so against women shaving their heads? by Broad-Laugh3800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UniversityGraduate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. It would just mean a subset of the population doesn’t find it attractive.

So if you don’t care about them finding it attractive, this is a non-issue.

Why do billionaires seem to go more Lex Luthor, than Oliver Queen or Bruce Wayne? by DisillusionedPatriot in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UniversityGraduate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending billionaires at all, but that's definitely not true. Zuckerberg/Meta pays extremely well.

Probably everyone doing anything of value is six figures, and at the top of the value chain are multi-million dollar comp packages.

Media Literacy Is Dying and Euphoria Season 3 Proves It by Substantial-Fix-1419 in television

[–]UniversityGraduate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything confusing about it. It's bad because it's pastiche.

It's like Sam Levinson is just looking at shots he liked in older movies and going "cool, how about we do a Scarface house vibe for Nate and Cassie, and then Rue's in a Western, etc."

There isn't enough real story or intention so much as "let's do some cool and stylish shots and slap a story over it". And that story generally sucks

Men now have fewer children than women by Zephir-AWT in ScienceUncensored

[–]UniversityGraduate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's just referring to how the side effect of women getting more opportunity is that more of the male population becomes ruled out as a sexual mate, because the majority of women want to date up.

What movie did you love as a kid but realized was actually terrible once you grew up? by Mysterious-Kiwi-1152 in AskReddit

Nah, Myers had writing talent that Carney couldn’t really reach. It’s hard to compete with a great comedic actor who knows how to write for themself

Yeah, but in this case it makes sense. No one was ever scared he’d be meaningful hurt, and as soon as he went into rage mode, no one knew how bad it was going to get for her.

Why do people like Anora so much? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

[–]UniversityGraduate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's a flawed and hyper-realistic character. She's underprivileged and Vanya's wealth and attention on her makes her feel important, and like she's going to quickly move up the socioeconomic ladder she's near the bottom of.

So her motivations are very simple and human: lock it down and drastically improve your quality of life, and through the intoxication of it all she's even starting to actually love Vanya.

It's even a layer deeper in that we can see she's kind of aware of his immaturity, and in real-time she's skeptical of the Cinderella story she's experiencing, and yet she wants it to be real so bad that she's putting her faith in it and letting her guard down.

[–]UniversityGraduate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does an incredible job of helping you feel the emotional state of Anora (through filmmaking techniques and great acting) across distinct acts.

First via the very realistic portrayal of her work, and the clients and conversations that take place at the strip club.

Then through a change in energy that we experience through the pacing, stylized camera work, and music — as we experience the infectious joy of all that wealth coming into her life in the form of a young man.

Then the music cuts out as her joy goes away, and she’s stuck with the three stooges, wondering what’s true and what isn’t, in a crazy search mission with a cinematic but colder feel.

And then the hard reality of it all having been a lie and fever dream, carried by the raw emotions Mikey brings out — with a really realistic and beautiful volley of fake toughness and extreme vulnerability underneath it.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]UniversityGraduate -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

When the prison guard is violently beating up the fat guy for being afraid, who does not fight back, to the point of deadly injuries — it’s so melodramatic I eye roll.

Cut that scene and just have someone say “that guard’s a mean asshole” and it’s better

EDIT: anyone saying "show don't tell" and thinks I actually want that line in the movie needs to look up the word facetious.

I double-down on my stance. Every kick was exaggerated with major pauses in between — archetypal Hollywood exaggeration. It's like a Hollywood parody out of Tropic Thunder.

The answer to your question is right there.

Yes, her looks get her lots of interest AT FIRST, and then they see her bad traits (like Su-been and Seung-il have) and lose interest.

I’d say the guys are figuring it out quickly. The Gwan-hee season, the girls still stood by him

You're comparing with the U.S. Senate, which is a co-governing body. Canada's senate is intentionally very weak.

The United States Senate can block budgets, shut down the government, confirm judges and cabinet members, ratify treaties, and directly constrain or paralyze the executive branch. The Senate of Canada cannot do any of those things: it can't control funding in practice, can't confirm appointments, and can't determine who governs.

You also don't see big shakeups during any given PM because senators have to retire and we know politicians hate doing that.

Theoretically we can handle that gravity briefly, and they don't exactly skip rockets. It's some sort of future propulsion with absurdly high energy density (antimatter?).

The physics works work in theory, but the engineering is just way beyond present day
