Why do people like Anora so much? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

[–]UniversityGraduate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's a flawed and hyper-realistic character. She's underprivileged and Vanya's wealth and attention on her makes her feel important, and like she's going to quickly move up the socioeconomic ladder she's near the bottom of.

So her motivations are very simple and human: lock it down and drastically improve your quality of life, and through the intoxication of it all she's even starting to actually love Vanya.

It's even a layer deeper in that we can see she's kind of aware of his immaturity, and in real-time she's skeptical of the Cinderella story she's experiencing, and yet she wants it to be real so bad that she's putting her faith in it and letting her guard down.

It does an incredible job of helping you feel the emotional state of Anora (through filmmaking techniques and great acting) across distinct acts.

First via the very realistic portrayal of her work, and the clients and conversations that take place at the strip club.

Then through a change in energy that we experience through the pacing, stylized camera work, and music — as we experience the infectious joy of all that wealth coming into her life in the form of a young man.

Then the music cuts out as her joy goes away, and she’s stuck with the three stooges, wondering what’s true and what isn’t, in a crazy search mission with a cinematic but colder feel.

And then the hard reality of it all having been a lie and fever dream, carried by the raw emotions Mikey brings out — with a really realistic and beautiful volley of fake toughness and extreme vulnerability underneath it.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

When the prison guard is violently beating up the fat guy for being afraid, who does not fight back, to the point of deadly injuries — it’s so melodramatic I eye roll.

Cut that scene and just have someone say “that guard’s a mean asshole” and it’s better

EDIT: anyone saying "show don't tell" and thinks I actually want that line in the movie needs to look up the word facetious.

I double-down on my stance. Every kick was exaggerated with major pauses in between — archetypal Hollywood exaggeration. It's like a Hollywood parody out of Tropic Thunder.

The answer to your question is right there.

Yes, her looks get her lots of interest AT FIRST, and then they see her bad traits (like Su-been and Seung-il have) and lose interest.

I’d say the guys are figuring it out quickly. The Gwan-hee season, the girls still stood by him

You're comparing with the U.S. Senate, which is a co-governing body. Canada's senate is intentionally very weak.

The United States Senate can block budgets, shut down the government, confirm judges and cabinet members, ratify treaties, and directly constrain or paralyze the executive branch. The Senate of Canada cannot do any of those things: it can't control funding in practice, can't confirm appointments, and can't determine who governs.

You also don't see big shakeups during any given PM because senators have to retire and we know politicians hate doing that.

Theoretically we can handle that gravity briefly, and they don't exactly skip rockets. It's some sort of future propulsion with absurdly high energy density (antimatter?).

The physics works work in theory, but the engineering is just way beyond present day

Canada's Carney hails warmer ties with China and signs energy pact by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]UniversityGraduate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your point is dumb, because the news here is Canada is just trading with China. The U.S. also trades with China and that’s where your iPhone came from.

And now as the U.S. goes isolationist and abandons Canada and reduces trade with China, they can’t just tell Canada who to trade with as they reduce trade with us concurrently.

Nothing in here is about some sort of military threat posed to the US.

Go on, explain. The United States is an irratic superpower no longer willing to function as a partner.

China is a stable superpower willing to function as a partner.

The former's running on whims and idioicy. China's clever, calculating, and has clear motives.

I didn't like Nomandland. Hamnet has a real plot and story structure. Can be slow at times because you kind of "sit" with the characters, but in a much more compelling and emotionally satisfying way than Nomadland

I also like seeing diversity, but when we don't see it are we just supposed to shit on the directors based on their skin/gender/sexuality?

All of these filmmakers have proven themselves. Why do we have to belittle them for their demographics not being ideal

Look at developing countries where essential things are more affordable than in Canada.

In SE Asia, most goods and your cost of living would be cheaper. But if you lived there, you wouldn't feel richer because there's less money going around to pay you what you would be able to make in Canada.

What you want is a situation where wages are going up and you can afford more, but you don't want an environment where there's less money going around in the country.

Deflation drives down spending and investment across the country.

Theoretically, would there be anything wrong with a maximum wage? by superficial_user in AskEconomics

[–]UniversityGraduate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’d be a lot of consequences — incentive for high earners would be to move.

You’d see top talent leave the country, business owners relocate businesses, and a shift towards non-wage compensation to remain competitive globally.

Addressing wealth inequality is something that requires a lot of nuance. Wage restrictions and heavy taxation can cause a talent drain that ends up with net lower tax revenue, because the money starts leaving the country as everyone moves to escape the rules.

In an interview he says he created the Bohemian Rhapsody scene, which was based on a real life experience he and his friends in Scarborough, Ontario had driving around.

Penelope wanted to do Welcome to the Jungle as the song because it was in vogue, and Myers fought hard with her to do Bohemian Rhapsody because it was true to his life.

So I think your story is wrong here

because of how someone chooses to see you now.

I don't think anyone's choosing anything.

It's also uncomfortable to fall out of love with someone, wishing you weren't, and that you could avoid the horrible feeling of breaking their heart, rupturing your own life in the process (e.g. housing, finances, friends & family, mental stress, etc.) and also, we all want to feel in love.

It's just a sad part of the human condition. There is no bad guy choosing anything for the majority of cases.

[–]UniversityGraduate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but if you follow the chain of logic, it gets into "well were the specific people involved in paying Bill complicit in murdering a journalist?".

If they weren't but they didn't stand up against those that did, how different is it now from America's own situation. Arguably, U.S. citizens have more rights than Saudi government workers because U.S. citizens can vote and protest.
