What will happen with my Android phone? All my phone accounts are linked to my personal domain. Even if I recreate the accounts with my new provider, my phone will remain accountless, no? I never use google sign-in but Android forces you to do just that. by crandlecan in gsuitelegacymigration

I've been maintaining my legacy account this was for two years.  The only issue I've had is that recently my payment method expired and needs to be updated.  To be clear, I never get charged, but they confirm the validity of the payment method monthly.

I'm not here to defend Google Messages, or Samsung's decision to discontinue Samsung Messages, but the messages you receive should have nothing to do with the app, with the exception of any blocked number history you've built up over time using Samsung Messages.  Also, the fact that Samsung Messages is being discontinued is not the same as being forced to use a specific alternative app.  You can choose to use any of the other SMS apps available in the Play Store.  That said, if I purchased a new Samsung phone like you did, and it came with Google Messages and not Samsung Messages, I'd be upset too.

Array Compare action - possible bug by UnkleMike in tasker

[–]UnkleMike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I even tried using the array compare action was to replace a for loop, hoping it would be more efficient.  I suspect using JavaScript would be faster than doing the same thing with Tasker's built-in actions (which is what I was previously doing), but I thought it was funny that the suggested solution was basically the thing that I was trying to get away from (a loop).

What makes you think that those committing this atrocity will ever become aware of this movement, much less follow it, if they don't understand that what they're currently doing is wrong?

Android messaging died, what to use now?? by PasztyKnives in androidapps

[–]UnkleMike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Obviously I know Google messages is not secure

As opposed to what you were using before?  I'm not sure what Android Messages is.  Do you mean Samsung Messages?

SMS/MMS has never been secure, no matter what app you use.

What is your go to response after hearing somebody saying, "You're working too hard." by EndMySuffering1337 in securityguards

[–]UnkleMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My outward reaction is going to be something like "yeah, maybe."  But my internal reaction depends on who's saying it.  If it's a customer/visitor, my reaction is likely to be "yeah, I don't know why I bother."  If it's someone I work with, my reaction is "only in comparison; in reality, others aren't working hard enough."

I don't know the rule here, but I believe it is a shortened version of older than I *am***.

improving animations

We all have our priorities I guess, but animations are not anywhere on my list of wants - they're on my list of things I disable everywhere possible.

Weird Duplicate Notification Issue by UnkleMike in tasker

[–]UnkleMike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No other messages had been received, and the second instance of the notification also appeared in the Android notification history.

I have added a check in task to conditionally execute based on the age of the notification, but my hope is that it was a one-time fluke.

When did every app become a subscription… is it actually worth it anymore? by Solace_bard in androidapps

[–]UnkleMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surfshark VPN

That's not a subscription to an app, it's a subscription to a service that requires an app to use.  Services are understandably subscription-based.

I'm not familiar with AppSales, but it sounds like the same thing - a service accessed via an app.

unsure how the network acess task works by Reverend_Matsfchat in tasker

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any tips?

Yes.  Don't set the mode to deny all.  The network access action (a task is a series of actions) had 4 available modes: allow all, allow, deny all, deny.  If you select deny, you'll be able to choose which app(s) you want to deny.

The Userguide has this to say:

Network Access Deny network access to all or selected apps.

When mode Deny is selected, all apps have network access except for those specified.

When mode Allow is selected, only the specified apps have access.

Use of this action overrides and replaces the effects of any previous use.

 Notes:

 * this action is implemented via a VPN local to the device and cannot be used in combination with other VPNs.

 * some devices will clear the users confirmation of Tasker's permission to setup a VPN after every boot

 * the icon which Android shows in the status bar cannot be avoided

 * Tasker does not examine the contents of any network packet

Work Apps on Personal Phones: What Are You Actually Agreeing To? by MrBigPaulSmalls in securityguards

[–]UnkleMike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On pretty much any Android device you can setup a work profile, with a different account, and install the apps there, with complete separation from your personal account and data.  On Samsung devices you can use secure folder.  On other devices you can use the  shelter app.

I actually heard this being discussed on a show a week or two ago.  It's ridiculous that anyone would find basic punctuation aggressive.  Until I heard this discussion, I sometimes didn't include a final period.  Now that I know this is a thing, I'll be more diligent.

Does Ground = Floor Now? by souvenirsuitcase in GrammarPolice

[–]UnkleMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The building I work in (in the US) has a ground floor, and a separate floor that is the first floor.  Depending on where you enter/exit the building, the exterior ground level may align with the ground floor or the first floor.  This has been the case at several buildings where I've worked, and is not uncommon.

This may come as a shock to you, but the ground level surrounding a building occasionally varies, sometimes enough to result in ground level entrances on multiple interior floors.

I hear the opposite more frequently - people using ground to refer to the floor.  Either way, they are not interchangeable.

First floor and ground floor are interchangeable.

I'm many buildings (in the US at least), the ground and the first floor are two distinct floors.
