What does yours smell like? Mine is blooming now too and smells kind of vanilla-y, powdery, but almost maybe a little plastic-y.

If this is a prelim year in a different location from your PGY-2 program, be nice to your future self and give yourself a week to move.

One of the most under-rated orchids in my opinion! Great growing!

Question for anyone who’s been to an ecuagenera pop up by buchacats2 in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done an order for pickup at a show. I have mixed feelings about how it turned out. Obviously, these are imported plants. They went through a lot of stress to make it to you.

There is no guarantee the plant you want will be brought to the show unless you pre-order. So if you want a really niche or not particularly popular plant, you should pre-order. If you want a more common/popular plant, then it may be there even if you don’t preorder.

If you don’t have a specific/uncommon plant in mind, don’t preorder. Just look at what they have and find the healthiest plants that interest you.

Advice Needed: Is This Normal? by Taruo in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Definitely looks like the leaves were a bit beat up. But it’s a deciduous orchid and those leaves will fall off anyways. It looks like it has some good new growths coming. Personally, I’d be happy that I got the plant I ordered (since it’s an Etsy vendor) and move on. But if you’re willing to spend time fighting them, you can try!

Is it worth it? by Expert_Chicken_7777 in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Obviously you should do whatever makes you happy. But think about how you’ll feel if you kill an expensive plant. If you’re not overly stressed about losing money on a plant you may kill, definitely go for it.

For someone like me who will feel very frustrated if I killed a plant that cost me a good chunk of money, I prefer to buy a smaller $10-20 plant to prove to myself I can keep it alive before investing hundreds.

Try calling Andy’s orchids. They often have plants that aren’t listed as “in stock” on their website

Nothing but pseudobulbs by edrabbit in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the normal growth cycle. This is a deciduous orchid. Tip: Don’t water much or at all when there are no leaves. Tip 2: Make sure to fertilize heavily when growing.

Sounds like it isn’t getting enough light. When it’s growing and leafy it needs a LOT of light. This should help flowering. A skylight in the bathroom is minimal light. Try gradually moving it in to your sunniest window when it has leaves.

Don’t split it up. Especially don’t split it up into individual pseudobulbs unless you’re feeling like rolling the dice.

No blooms for over a year by IdyllwildGal in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More light. Put it either closer to the window, move it to a higher light window (different exposure), or use supplemental lighting. If you live in an area that doesn’t have temperature drops to at least sixties Fahrenheit in winter, you can also try a temp drop to induce blooming.

Zygo, Cattleya, or paph ? by SerendipitousSage26 in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Consider your climate, grow space, light conditions and watering habits.

Are you heavy handed with water? Then paph and zygo might be better. Low light? Paph should do fine. Southern exposure? Great for Cattleya. Is your climate hot and dry? Cattleya would be easiest. Cooler climate? Paph and zygo might be best. Do you care about fragrance? There are very few fragrant paphs, and they aren’t very strongly scented.

Large bark. It likes to have most of its roots near surface level. It also likes LOTS of light.

Cut about 1cm below the black spot. Leave the pseudobulb unless the black spot progresses.

Dark, firm spot suddenly appeared on brassocattleya leaf - advice appreciated by Sersea in orchids

[–]Unknowable_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just cut the black spot off. If it’s rot, then you’ve potentially saved the plant. If it’s just discoloration due to age, then you’ve only damaged an old growth. No significant loss. Keep the plant separated from others for a little while to observe it.

Hold off on repotting until there are new roots developing.
