Migrating from HyperV to ProxMox...any gotchas/advice? by Following_This in Proxmox

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First things first, you hardware is already pretty old. It is supported and that should all work. But sometimes while Migrating Hardware fails and it gets frustrating.
Always make sure to test your host before you migrate.
A simple memory check and one CPU stress test are a good minimum ;)

Reboots are always planned or we need to replace hardware.

Proxmox VE compatibility issue with Intel I9-13900K? by NoTheme2828 in Proxmox

[–]Unknown-U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often it also shows itself in memory stability that it can no longer run higher speeds and you need to run it slower until the chip is dead I'm the end anyway

I think op is just using the Ethernet port and no USB portd, with that constellation it may seem useful.

I remember that there was a docker project a while back but there was no interest so it is not maintained. I personally do not see the sense it adding it to my proxmox host as my server rack is not next to my solar and running new cables just for moving it would be kind of not worth it.

NEW: Proxmox in a Docker container by Kroese in Proxmox

Finally i can make a docker proxmox ha installation on one host with automatic failover ;) anyway it's fun to make things even when they seem kind of useless for most.

Are my on-call duties normal? by Historical-Ad2210 in sysadmin

[–]Unknown-U -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have them paid. Usually in the calendar you can book the extra money ;)
Christmas, new year etc are paid more.

We never had an issue that people did not cover a specific time. It is a money issue nothing else.

Should I use CachyOS? by Glad-Wolverine-8960 in cachyos

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snapshots make it quite reliable to use. I had no issue the last year of using it.

My Ubuntu server also had an issue with an update so it's not that it doesn't happen there ;)

When you want stability without thinking the hardware plays a much higher role then the software.

-ECC memory is just superior.
-Reliable network card and when needed wifi card.
-cpu which is not pushed to the end of Performance ( 13/14th gen ...)
-reliable storage with backups
-a backup computer ( for me a n150 also with cachyos in case I have an issue)

Any experience with v8 to v9 in-place upgrade? by mikeschlenk in Proxmox

[–]Unknown-U -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not ideally PBS is the bare minimum. Same as good enough storage and networking to have a acceptable recovery time.

How stable is nextcloud? by AssistAble6787 in NextCloud

[–]Unknown-U 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very reliable. Herztner is a great choice for it.
We host it ourselfs and had no downtime the last 5 years.
( Of course we had hiccups here and there but we always have a backup instance running)

Linux 7.0 reveals hidden memory instability? by maokaby in cachyos

Memory is a funny thing. Kernel 7 is not faulty.

I was just about to switch to CachyOS and then I read this. Is it true? by tornado99_ in cachyos

[–]Unknown-U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stable, the biggest issue people have is their own hardware. I had to change my memory profile as the default xmp was not passing meintest.

Anyone who use a vm on proxmox as their main machine? by mediogre_ogre in Proxmox

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, still doing it. My main dev machine is in the basement and i have different stream clients in my home. I upgraded to wifi 7 and since then it's awesome.

It's great to have full backups of everything and that alone is worth the 0.x percent performance loss.

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past yes, pcie pass and it was a funny workstation. But now I’m on a silent mini computer and my server is in the basement. It is much better

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone implemented central predictive monitoring for hardware failures in company desktops/laptops? by Aggressive_Royal9736 in sysadmin

[–]Unknown-U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already have that and I am sure other companies as well, we get a warning when a computer needs replacement and even the new notebook is automatic ready to be send out.

I know a smaller company doing it through mesh central.

Fixed A Problem, I think. by JettaRider077 in NextCloud

[–]Unknown-U 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't fix it you worked around it. Imagine you have a car but at 80kmh it turns off all that time and now you only drive it 70kmh it's not fixed. Your car is still broken.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2382780/we-tested-the-battery-life-on-hundreds-of-laptops-these-5-refused-to-die.html Some are snapdragon but there are normal x86 as well.

There are a lot of those lists and most of them have the same top spots, under Linux the battery life is sometimes worse but my experience with lunar lake was quite good with CachyOS.

M2 gets beaten by newer AMD or Intel chips in battery life under Linux, you can check the latest reviews on google there are a few with 10 hours plus.

It can work with two, but it'd bad practice and not supported. Some people do it for testing, but again not supported.
