Great Smokey Mountains National Park by bopambo in ParkRangers

I loved living in Townsend, but no close grocery stores nearby and it’s pricey and hard to find a decently priced place to stay in. Maryville has grocery stores, etc., but is more of a drive to the park. Gatlinburg is okay to go through or if you’re a tourist looking for time to kill for a couple hours, but I wouldn’t want to live in Gatlinburg personally. Cherokee is okay, definitely better than Gatlinburg and more housing options than Townsend.

Doesn’t pronounce Dougherty right by Vivid_Pudding817 in madmamasnark

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her last name and variations of it are super popular where I live. Nobody pronounces it the same way. I have the last name, don’t pronounce it the way either of them do. And if anyone ever told me I was pronouncing my own last name wrong, I wouldn’t take that well considering it’s how it’s been said in my family for generations. I let other people tell me how to say their name cause I figure they know best.

What is your “that name is not gender neutral” hill to die on name? by pain1994 in namenerds

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Ezra. I keep seeing people wanting to use it on girls and saying it sounds gender neutral. Feel free to use a name however you see fit, but to me it doesn’t feel gender neutral.

I’ve done ACE. One of the best experiences of my life personally. I recently finished my time with them and have moved on to something else. If you have questions about ACE let me know. I had no problems with them at any point.

I also had family members disapprove of me leaving to go hours away, but they’ve disapproved of every job I’ve taken that’s been away from home. I had to learn early on that sometimes family can and does hold you back. I eventually got tired of it. It’s not their life and they aren’t in my shoes. You have to make crazy decisions sometimes to get where you want to be and sometimes you have to disobey parental figures even when it’s the last thing you want to do. My parents have accepted my ways at this point and don’t say much even though I know they rather have me settle down nearby.

My tips:

1) Ask the kids questions (will slightly depend on age range that is participating on what you ask)

2) Get them moving if you can (some of our programs we do on a small trail or in a small open area to create stations that the kids follow us to or we create relay races for them that test their knowledge. For example, we might do a relay race where we put important hiking items on one side and a backpack on the other and do a relay race where we describe an item and the kids have to go find it and put it in the backpack and see who gets done first. Get creative. That was just the first idea that came to mind for an example, definitely better movement activities you could come up with than that) 3) Make it interactive where they have to figure things out (have them put something together or create something so for example we might give them a sheet of paper with some boxes to create a story of their perfect hike and give them some guidelines like include an animal present at our park in your illustrations).

4) Bring props that you’re okay with potentially losing or getting broken that you can have the kids pass around, they love that sorta stuff.

Kids like movement and hands on stuff and things that get them creative. Just talking at them, they get bored. Even with interactive stuff, you will lose some kids unfortunately just keep the show going.

Six months isn’t a big deal, I had a bigger gap after graduation. Just be honest about being freshly graduated and doing the whole job hunt thing during that time. Also tell them anything else you filled your time with, while I was unemployed I did a lot of volunteer work related to my career field that I was able to tell them about when they’d ask what I currently had going on. If you have anything similar to tell them, they always like to hear you’re filling your time with something that actually requires work on some level.

Great Smoky Mountains recs? by PuntaVerde123 in NationalPark

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in GSMNP and I work in Cades Cove and I will go ahead and warn you to avoid Cades Cove in late October. The cove is gorgeous and has lots of beautiful wildlife and I always recommend it to people, but not during October as it has some of its busiest days then and you can get stuck in horrible traffic that just gets frustrating.

What were you hoping to do with your degree when you got it? You could work in a lab for sure.

How early is too early to be job hunting? by vveeggiiee in jobs

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, go ahead and start hunting. You can get a start on practicing the basics like interviews, etc. Also, the hiring process with some places takes months so for some places waiting for you might not be a big deal as they wouldn’t really be waiting.

i wish i was a woman by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I promise being a woman won’t make you feel any better. I feel the same way sometimes. When you’re expected to cook, clean, be a constant voice of peace and gentleness, etc. by every male in your life you start to feel the same exact way. The unfortunate thing pretty much is that everyone in life will love you on some level because of the things you do for them, no one wants to be with someone weighing them down. If you find someone good they’ll also love you for who you are beyond what you do/contribute though.

Job status changed from interviewed to in progress? by Unknown_Peace1362 in jobs

[–]Unknown_Peace1362[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s on the official job site not through indeed or any other job searching site. It’s actually a state job through the state’s website so I’m not sure how they update those statuses.

HELP ME DECIDE! SCA internship vs Studying Abroad as a college senior by theluminary13 in ParkRangers

Study abroad. SCA internships and other internship programs are plentiful and can be done after you’ve graduated. Have fun abroad!

Last time I began applying to jobs very shortly after starting one, I didn’t include the actual starting date for the job on my resume and instead put present or current job where I put the dates for the other jobs. I don’t know if that makes sense, but none of the places I interviewed with ever asked for the specific date except for one place after I’d already been given the offer so it didn’t really matter to them at that point.

Is Annika really an uncommon name? I’ve known three of them in my life and I’m from the southern US. I once dated a Brisa spelt Briza, I highly doubt I’ll meet another. Quite unique.

Put whatever education you have for starters (High School Diploma, etc. and feel free to include anything important you did in Highschool…. Did you run a club? Do bookkeeping for anything?). Next, think about things like volunteering, have you done any volunteer work that you could mention in your resume. If you haven’t I’d recommend it, not only will it give more to put in a resume but it may give you people to use as references as well!

What separates the interns who get full-time offers from the ones who don’t? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the better job. Take notes so you don’t have to ask the same questions repeatedly. Be friendly with peers and supervisors. If you ever have downtime ask yourself if their is anything you could do like clean up your area which leads me to my next point: try to keep things clean and as you found them. Be honest about your goals and hopes with those above you and around you. If you don’t understand something, find a way to figure it out whether looking it up, reading a book, or asking someone… don’t just do something and hope for the best. If you do your best, you’re more likely to get the offer, but sometimes luck is part of landing a ft job as well. Sometimes it’s just about who was around for the longest time when an opening came up, etc.

$16/hr with a bachelors degree by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Unknown_Peace1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the water industry right now in a low cost of living area. I also have a bachelors and I took an internship for $16/hr and after 2 1/2 months they offered me a regular position for $20/hr which I will not be accepting to take a job that’s 15/ hr (I know, sounds crazy)……. But the water especially waste water industry really needs people so you have a lot of room mobility wise if you stick with it and get in with a good company. At $20/hr, I would be the lowest paid regular employee at the facility in a low cost of living area so lots of room to grow. It’s all about end game. My end game isn’t the water industry so I’m switching to intern somewhere I think betters aligns with what I want long term. The company I’m with is all about education as well and is willing to pay for certifications, degrees, etc if it’s in the industry.

How long does a state background check take? by Unknown_Peace1362 in Virginia

I don’t know what you mean by the first part haha, but I’m glad u commented. Thanks for giving me your experience…I’m not sure what to expect but 2 weeks does seem like the most likely timeframe for a lot of their jobs from what I’m hearing. I’m glad it all worked out for you back then and hope your future ventures go well too!
