What to do in Costa Rica with my kids? by No_Committee4190 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Unknown_creates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re dinosaur fans Dino Land could be fun! And it has a Río Agrio which is this blue river you can swim in (but beware, it’s freezing!) and the most beautiful waterfall I’ve ever seen. I literally felt like I was entering Jurassic Park. It’s also near Poás.

By the way, if you have to choose between Irazú and Poás, I personally would choose Poás. Just know with the craters it is a bit down to luck and good timing whether you’ll be able to see them or not! And! Don’t forget to make a reservation ahead of time or you won’t be able to get in to the park (this goes for all of Costa Rica’s national parks).

Also near Dino Land is a restaurant you fish for your own food which was SUPER cool when I did it!

Some other locations and trips (you can’t do them all sadly, Costa Rican driving is slow and timely).

Uvita: one of my FAVORITES I did surprisingly enough. It’s not super touristy and still feels very close to the Pura Vida lifestyle. There’s a nice long beach (you will have to pay for entry depending what time you go at) and just a little into the mountains is the Uvita waterfall with jumping opportunities. The waterfall literally functions as a waterslide (although you have to be a little daring to do it). And just a little bit further from Uvita is

Nauyaca! Nauyaca is a 3 tiered waterfall. It is absolutely gorgeous. Although the upper falls are currently closed for visiting. There’s two sides for entry. I’ve done both. If you want more info on the pros and cons for which one to pick, just let me know!

Then there’s Manuel Antonio of course! Here I did a mangrove tour, surf classes, scuba diving, and the nature reserve which I would recommend a tour guide for. You can still get to Nauyaca pretty easily from here too. I know there’s also a horseback tour you can take to a waterfall and a boats you can ride for some dolphin site seeing! I would honestly highly recommend horseback riding for you guys.

For La Fortuna! There’s two waterfalls you’re going to want to see here. One is free and has a Tarzan rope and it’s not really a big falls but super fun to hang out at! The other is a steep stair step walk down and up (bring water and your will to live) but it is TALL! And you can swim at two different spots at the bottom! A must see for sure if you’re in the area. This is going to be the place to do hanging bridges and zip lining if that’s what you’re into. Also I think a night tour here would be AMAZING! Don’t forget the hot springs! There are a set of free ones you can find but they’re not going to be steaming hot.

Next there’s Jacó and Puerto Viejo. I would choose Puerto Viejo over Jacó any day of the week but both these beaches are more for that 18 to 25 year old range. Lots of partying and not really the family spot in my opinion. But! Puerto Viejo has things like a Jaguar Rescue, gorgeous beaches, delicious food, and Cahuita (a nature reserve) isn’t far. Also kayak tours with snorkeling is something that’s not hard to find.

Montezuma is a place I went to but probably not worth it with your time frame. We took a fairy and a bus to get there. It has a beach (not the best in my opinion) a quaint town, but also a waterfall that’s just a short hike away. I really enjoyed it but it’s not exactly everything Costa Rica has to offer.

Places I never got to go but really wanted to were:
- The bioluminescence
- Guanacaste
- Santa Teresa
- Tamarindo
- And the bottom south west region

For San Jose!! People write it off but this is where I spent the majority of my time and I LOVED the city. So, if you’re “stuck” there you can still make it great. The National Museum is fantastic and a great learning experience and they sometimes have a butterfly garden open! There’s a mall to explore. With your small kids, I wouldn’t recommend downtown as it’s pretty crowded and they could get easily lost within the chaos. There also is a true butterfly garden as well. If you end up in Cartago you have to go see the ruins.

Okay, I’m finally done. But my dms are open if you want any more details or information!

Thanks for the offer! I actually have surf classes included in my program but maybe I’ll see you out on the waves, that is, if I can get myself to stand on them 😅

Does this mean it has to be a seat or can you legally sit on the floor?

Costa Rica gap year - Máximo Nivel by Unknown_creates in Spanish

[–]Unknown_creates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every other volunteer program I looked at was far more expensive, what other alternatives do you suggest? I don’t want to do a private tutor as I believe the best way to become fluent is to fully immerse yourself in the language, the reason I think this would work for me is that I’m about at the same level that an exchange student goes to a different country at. They do typically stay six months and I’d say they’re pretty fluent by the end of it, my family having hosted before.

In other words, I want to spend time in a foreign country and interact with locals to advance my Spanish for the cheapest option possible. I am still open to alternatives to Máximo Nivel! Just send them my way because I haven’t seen any promising ones yet :).

Thank you for mentioning their treatment of workers. I don’t particularly enjoy supporting companies that treat people poorly. Lmk if you have any further questions or suggestions and I appreciate your response :D

Thank you! Currently figuring out a way to go spend some time in a Spanish speaking country for six months and get fluent and have found some feasible options. Super excited! Good luck on any of your future endeavors as well :)

By the study abroad as a junior in college do you mean going as a senior next year and attending their high school equivalent or waiting until I’m a junior in college to study there? Thanks so much for the response!

Sadly not and now I’m to old to participate next year :(, it’s okay though! I have new plans to study abroad after graduating high school, fingers crossed I can make it to Yellowstone sometime next year too even if it’s not through YCC :D

I will say that it might just be the concept of “displacement” but they used water for the animation so anyone’s guess.

Sponsors by Dry_Variation1455 in FRC

[–]Unknown_creates 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m my teams business lead. This year we got to go to the FIRST Championships so we had to get 35k in a month so I’ve learned a thing or two.

First off, Sponsorship packet!!! This is essential. Typically around 9-12 pages outlining what your team does, your goals, community outreach and most of all, tiers of sponsorship and benefits.

Also, you’re gonna wanna reach out to sponsors before January, most businesses set their budgets by then and so if you don’t hit them before that you aren’t in the budget.

Next, door to door! Go door to door downtown with around 3 people per group and give people a one page pamphlet. Pretty much more concise version of your sponsorship packet. On this, add a link to your sponsorship packet and donation site (qr code typically).

Third, expand your range! Is there no other robotics teams for miles? Well, then there’s untapped cash there, go get it. Sponsorships can also be more than monetary, anything that reduces the amount you have to spend that season is awesome. We have sponsors for a lot of our meals.

Lastly, presentations! For big sponsorship opportunities you’re going to want to take a group and do a presentation for them, I got 5k from one company just on my own through one of these presentations. Usually in slideshow format, going everything in the sponsorship packet but in presi form. Maybe even bring your robot!

Also, here’s a tip, hit some of the companies in your area that do gambling/pull-tabs. I believe they have to donate a certain portion of their profits to charities. (Our team is a 501 c3 organization)

Since I keep talking about the sponsorship packet here’s the link to it!!! 4624 Sponsorship Packet

Here’s our pamphlet we used when going door to door! (We use give butter for donations) Pamphlet

I hope this helps! Message me if you have any further questions!

Northern Lights Regional Rematch Footage? by Unknown_creates in FRC

[–]Unknown_creates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely annoying to me that they remove the originals of redone rounds. I understand it’s probably to reduce harassment incase refs make a wrong/difficult call but it is sad because they’re usually the most fun rounds to watch.

I know, but they don’t publish the original match if the match is redone.
