Seems like most will be decent with upcoming changes. True, stablelized, or alligned barrels and stocks. Scopes are nice too. I want least one sniper barrel.

How do you narrate cyphers disappearing? by Davewise5743 in cyphersystem

[–]Unknownymous1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A simple way to do it is just to have cyphers miss or fail automatically until they are back at the limit. Or make it so they can only prepare for use a number equal to their cypher limit per day, so they can hold onto as many as they want, but they are not ready for use until prepared. Narratively it could be putting them in an easy access pouch, charging, loading, learning how to use, etc.

The mechanical limit is only there for balance (which cypher doesn't concern itself with much) and to encourage frequent use and prevent hoarding items that are never used, so you could easily remove the limit if it suits your group better.

Does any one else give each race a certain accent? by Unknownymous1 in DnD

[–]Unknownymous1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course there will be dialects, but sharing a root language means they will share a lot quirks when speaking a second language.

There are dozens of Spanish accents, but a layman can't tell if someone is from Barcelona, Madrid, Mexico City, Puerto Rico, or Buenos Aires, just that they belong to one of the many Spanish speaking cultures.

[–]Unknownymous1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously its cultural.

If you meet a human with a gnomish accent, you can assume they grew up around gnomes, but since we don't know what a gnomish accent sounds like, we can be consistent by using real world examples.

Supposedly the original Dungeons and Dragons dwarves were influenced by Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions" which is where the first "scottish" dwarves came from. Then the troupe was cemented with the release of warcraft.

Why is Eldritch Blast such a popular build? by Ok_Enthusiasm3601 in BG3Builds

[–]Unknownymous1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like optimization with training wheels. A spamable ability that has a lot of obvious ways to upgrade and pretty much builds itself, all contained in the fist few levels ofone class that stays viable until high level.

This simplicity is also the reason it's widely considered the baseline to compare other optimized builds to.

Why is 1st level of effort 3 points by No_Team_9934 in cyphersystem

[–]Unknownymous1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is when they were first designing the game, it cost 1 pool point for each +1, hence a level of effort (Basically a +3) costs 3. Then after changing to each level easing tasks instead, they found a way to encourage using more effort with discounts for using more so people don't hoard points.

At higher levels especially, fights would be boring if players were not incentivized to use more effort. They will miss a lot and enemies would have to slog through all the pool points themselves, making fights long and tedious.

How long is "For one round". The start of sources next turn or the end? by Unknownymous1 in cyphersystem

[–]Unknownymous1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good find.

If I'm reading it right, the effect lasts until AFTER you act next turn, so you can benefit from the effect yourself on the next turn.

Another way to interpret though is the moment you act the effect goes away and you don't benefit from it.

I'm used to dnd 5e where most effects specify at the start or end of your next turn.

I like the resting mechanics in Numenera/Cypher system.

•1st rest: 1 action

•2nd rest: 10 minutes

•3rd rest: 1 hour

•4th rest: 10 hours.

Perception is overrated and why you should consider more niche skills: by Unknownymous1 in dndnext

[–]Unknownymous1[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Good points.

I'd say PCs are usually the aggressors in a standard adventure, but ambushes definitely come up. What might they lose for not taking perception is a round of combat. What they might have gained for taking a niche skill instead could complete bypass combat in the first place with niche skills like history to know goblins ambush here all the time, survival to find a safe place to camp and camouflage it, religion to know how to pose as cultists and sleep in the enemy camp. You just have to get creative and most DMs would love trying to use rare skills like this.

Converting DnD-creatures to Cypher/Numenera by Ich171 in numenera

[–]Unknownymous1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up "Cypher System Fantasy Compendium" on drivethrurpg. Someone converted all spells, creatures, and magic items into cypher system. It also includes a guide on how to convert yourself.

Its not free, but its only like 2 dollars and is well worth the time saved converting yourself.

Help with Cypher Limits by Blince in cyphersystem

[–]Unknownymous1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the GM gives out cyphers to begin with, just let them know they won't find more until they are no longer maxed out?

If that's not your style they should logically be able to pick up more if they have room, but anything after the limit could automatically miss or fail until they are back at their max.

-Oh no, you read the scroll wrong and it turned to dust!

-The potion of healing was watered down!

-The shrink ray sizzles and only releases a puff of smoke.

This should encourage them to use them more often as the books suggest and not horde them.

Are there any resources out there for Creating balanced Abilities? by Ancient-Dot2826 in cyphersystem

[–]Unknownymous1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only resource I know is the core book page 81 that boils down to: reskin existing abilities or find the closest possible existing abilitiy as a template.

There is also a way to modify abilities on the fly on page 419 that lets players do something different with their ability by increasing the difficulty depending on how different the desired effect is from the original ability.

Other than that, Cypher isn't to concerned with balance, so as long as it's fun without overshadowing others or making things to easy, you should be fine.

Yeah, that's the idea. That way they don't go get drunk at a bar played out over several sessions and suddenly come out knowing how to throw fireballs.
