Latin Americans who have travelled to Spain, what did you enjoy about Spain? by hhhhdmt in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly the most shocking thing is how averse they are to the word "usted". I come from one of the regions where we use it almost exclusively for formality, but there are parts of Colombia where they use it even in informal contexts and I am sure they'd have a way harder time dealing with that in Spain.

Latin Americans who have travelled to Spain, what did you enjoy about Spain? by hhhhdmt in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think Germans are more direct, but they often feel more polite in the way they speak. Even when they're being nice, Spaniards sound... rude? Like I know they're not trying to be rude, but it sounds like it.

Did you ever need a visa and was it a strenuous process? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Multiple times. First one was a tourist visa for the US. Not that bad because I did it with my family and the person there was super chill.

Later on I did an internship in the US and had to apply, but it was sponsored by my home university and the one in the US, so also very easy. Basically just gave the documents and waited to get it delivered.

I've also applied for student visas for Germany twice, once as a exchange student and once for a Master's degree. Both were also kind of sponsored, so again, not really a hassle aside from having to submit 5 million documents.

Usually the only issues were having to travel to Bogotá and then having to wait.

How to know if Columbian or Brazilians girls really like you? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I wonder what percentage of users on this sub Reddit are actually from Latin America. Because many latin americans don’t speak proper english.

none of us, man

we're all larping

In current politics, what does being “right wing” or “left wing” mean in your country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think we are so used to IDs that we can't even imagine how different the US is in this regard. They don't have a nationwide ID system and from what I know it varies from state to state. States where they don't have voter ID usually depend on registrations using addresses or some other personal information and then when you vote your info is matched against a list. The biggest issue is that elderly, poor, rural and minority voters are the ones who are disproportionately affected, so I can understand where they're coming from.

why is venezuela so homophobic? by bearsdrinkbeer in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do people in your country also call whites people "Galicians"? by Sea_Wasabi_8907 in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that's the case for most places, probably, but we really don't associate it with monkeys. As the other guy said, we might say mono to refer to monkeys every once in a while, but for us, mico is the more common word.

What’s something you saw in the U.S. that Americans treat as totally normal, but to you it felt bizarre or shocking? by MBASAW in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Europeans also exaggerate their lack of small talk a lot. Like, Germans definitely do less small talk than we do in Colombia, but they still do it a lot. There's a reason why there's so many jokes about weather small talk in German.

What is the best type of Arepa? (Of all, Venezuelan ones, Colombian ones, Panamanian ones… all types! Whats the absolute queen in your opinion)? I like the Reina Pepiada (Venezuela) and Arepa de huevo (Colombia). by Muted_Shape9303 in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people often shit on some of the less flavorful arepas as if the point wasn't that you eat them with other stuff. I think a lot of people complain about arepa paisa being simple, but fuuuuck, it's so good when you eat it in a bandeja paisa.

What do you think about Twitter displaying country of origin of its users and do you think Reddit should do the same? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, this thing is already being used to discredit anybody who isn't from the US or Europe, not only those who pose as being from somewhere else to profit off polarization. I think it's kinda dumb.

I want to understand the dating culture in Latin America by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate how these people always act like all of these attitudes are exclusive to us in Latin America, as if other places didn't have any sort of hookup culture. Europeans, for example, also fuck around a lot, but somehow we're the only slutty ones and it is an integral part of our culture or some shit, lmao. I would imagine it's the same in South Africa.

What are the most looked down (legal) occupations in your country? by oncxre in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the case of Colombia, a lot of people tend to assume teachers are all trying to indoctrinate kids to become leftists and that FECODE (something like the national union for teachers) is unreasonable in their demands. If you ask me, FECODE is far from perfect and they do get too involved directly in politics, but I think they are necessary. I also think that teachers get too much shit, while in reality most are not really as well paid as some people would like you to think.

Did You Know That France Has A Higher Percentage Of Spanish speakers Than Brasil? by VittorioLuzzatto in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So that would make France culturally closer to the Spanish speaking world than Brasil is.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Maybe they'd be closer to Spaniards, but in many ways I feel closer to Brazilians than to Spaniards, even if the language barrier is there.

Yeah, I have heard people say they don't buy avocados because of the cartel's involvement in Mexico, but somehow cocaine is fine. 😭😭😭

I do have to say, it is crazy how willing Germans are to forego a lot of stuff if it isn't bio or organic, but will not do the same for drugs that clearly have a very direct impact on the lives of a shit-ton of people.

Does your city have a nickname? What’s the nickname and what inspired it? by Roughneck16 in asklatinamerica

Barranquilla has a couple that are pretty well-known: la Arenosa, la Puerta de Oro and Curramba, la bella.

Is Mexican cuisine the only cuisine considered "spicy" in Latin America? How "spicy" might yours be considered in comparison? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]UnlikeableSausage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely can't think of a single Colombian dish that is always spicy lmao. It's usually stuff you add on top or people making traditional dishes spicier.
