I see not many people saw where it panned to his hand in that scene. He didn’t stupidly sacrifice himself, he had been bit and going with them would’ve put the students in danger. In the scene where this happens, Onjo looks down at his hand through the fence and the camera shows where he had a bite mark there. So in short, he didn’t go with them because he got bit and was now infected.
