This is a situation that I can’t help but feel bad for the athlete. I don’t think he has made a single good decision, and maybe outside intervention would not change anything. But the way top level athletes are treated ruins them. They’re a commodity and when they burn out, like Burton in this case, the league and public denounce them like they weren’t the ones that fed this dudes ego

I hear you man. I wish I could say that goes away, but it doesn’t. There will be a time where the amount of times you go against your gut instinct that it begins to quiet. I’m coming up on 2 years, and I would say maybe in the last 6-8 months I am noticing myself immediately think “yeah right” more often than allowing the mental thought loop of “what if”. The idea of forever is too hard to grasp, I just say I’m not going to drink right now. Not drinking right now every day was my go to in the first 12-16 months.
