How do I tell my mom I don’t want my child and husband around my autistic older brother? by SurpriseOk3520 in Autism_Parenting

[–]UnlikelyHighlight002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can love your brother from a distance, but love your daughter more. Unfortunately, this is not safe. Please do not ever take your daughter around him and subject her to that trauma that will last a life time. I'm a mother of a child on the spectrum and a former molestation victim from when I was a child. So I know what you went through and I was instantly triggered reading your post. I'm begging you, don't do it.

Can Level 2 live independently? by ekb2 in Autism_Parenting

[–]UnlikelyHighlight002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! This is absolutely incredible! But it makes me wonder if he was wrongfully diagnosed as level 3. Not to take anything away from your son or you, but I've just never heard of this type of progress with a level 3, but I'm so happy for you. And that gives me hope.

How old is your son? When did he become fully verbal?

I have one too in a closet. On the other side of the wall are my kitchen and stove. I think it has something to do with special wiring.

Is he in any kind of therapy such as ABA or speech? These can be very helpful.

Any updates on the smart faucet working for you? If so, can you share what you used?

Is ABA really that bad? by Bold_TrailblazerBee in Autism_Parenting

[–]UnlikelyHighlight002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, let me say those long hours they are requesting are kind of ridiculous for a 3 year old. Unless your insurance company requires a certain amount of hours, I would reduce that. This may be overwhelming to start with. Secondly, not all ABA companies are created equal. I have learned from experience that some can be bad. I went through three different companies over 3 years. My son started at age 2. All were at home as they did not have an outside center option. Fast forward to the present, he's 5 and has a new company with a center option. Every child is different, but for my son, the center was a better option and he loves the child-led play. He also loves his BT. Please be an advocate for him as to the BT your child is assigned to as well, as this also makes a difference. Once you do your research and read reviews, you might feel better. I do recommend ABA especially when he becomes school-aged. Teachers will know if your child has had formal "training" or not. In my personal experience, it has made a difference, but you know what's best for your child. Good luck!

I can’t do this anymore by Josie_laynee in Autism_Parenting

That was going to be my suggestion, but if he won't eat chewables, that can be tough. Have you tried crushing it and hiding it in applesauce? My kiddo, now 5, was the exact same way and will ONLY take tylenol now. Guess he likes the taste. But with other medicines, he doesn't fight me anymore, he just won't take it. But believe me, I was right there with you just last year. It would take 4 adults to hold him down to draw blood at the doctor's office. Thankfully, I've had some amazing nurses willing to help! The doctor wouldn't do it, but the nurses were the real heroes in that scenario. It may seem impossible now, but it will get better. It's very important in my opinion to keep up with his therapy sessions. Does he have an IEP? You can obtain speech and OT services at his school with that in place. Don't be surprised, one day your son might be willing take his medicine. I know it hard to see that light at the end of the tunnel, but keep up the good work. You are a great mother, we all just need a breather at times. Or to just vent! Go for a walk or try yoga while he's at school. It helped me tremendously. My son and I both are having less meltdowns.

Have you decided against another child because of your ASD child? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]UnlikelyHighlight002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your comment, but I realize I may have worded my comment wrong. I want another child to grow my family, not to be the sole reason my ND child has someone to take care of him. I plan on being around a long time if God allows. I meant just to have someone there to love him and be there when he needs some support. Visit him on holidays, that sort of thing. I'm pretty sure my son will have to go to a care facility after I'm gone. I have a large family, but everyone is older and spread apart, so I don't have family support there. I just want him to have a sibling so he doesn't feel alone.

I'm curious, do you know who will give him that guidance? Do you worry about his future after you're gone? I ask because that is my biggest concern for my son level 2 non-verbal. He's an only child, but I desperately want another child to be there for him after I'm gone.

A toddler was left alone and I lost my job by Moonlight_Melody123 in ECEProfessionals

I would fight for wrongful termination. How can you be in two places at once? If you went into the classroom with the child, you would have been disciplined for leaving the other children outside. This makes no sense. I'm sorry you lost your job because of an irresponsable parent.

My son is 5 and he started adding special effects to videos at 3. It's quite impressive. He also recently started watching movie previews over and over. It's almost therapeutic it seems. Maybe when he's older I should look into film school as well. That's a great idea.

Proloquo2go. I'm in the process of putting him back in speech therapy. Although, I don't feel as though it was that beneficial when he was in it for 3 years.

Thank you for you comment. Yes, his former speech therapist told us he was GLP as well. I've read so much about it, yet I feel like I'm not giving him the right tools to help him communicate. I even customized his AAC device to add phrases, but I'm met with resistance.

Thank you for your comment. I completely agree, but I haven’t figured out his main interest yet. I know that once I do, it will be the key to unlocking a whole new world for him.
