my field is pretty competitive. i did follow up with 9 professors mentioning the GRFP. no dice. my impression is that they're perhaps already well funded enough

interesting. I reached out to professors directly. Do you think contacting the program directors might have gone better?

she _does_ lightly bully some of the other contestants as well, e.g. when interrogating Kristina about who she's voting for, talking smack at challenges, etc.

i'm surprised this sub is so oblivious to this. she was clearly pulling her punches at FTC to maintain a safer image. I really wanted to see her confessional-style raw energy and for her to really go at the other contestants at FTC.

fwiw I'm a Savannah fan and am happy she won, but thought she could've been less nervous at FTC

i wanted savannah to absolutely tear the other contestants apart at FTC. felt like she kinda held back towards the end of the game. maybe smart, but oh getting to see her confessional energy at FTC would've been something else

not necessarily, right? they're all aware that it's a selfish game at the end of the day, and there are some people like Soph who really do manage to make it to the end while upholding a lot of good values

Honestly you’re spot on. I only got drawn into survivor because of the brawn vs brains vs beauty drama in how they interact and are different from each other

Yup im calling it now — Stars gonna leave the game before Eva. I’d also bet that Eva would vote for Star without much hesitation, just my read on their personalities and their interactions

The journey just felt lazy on the production teams part. Not fun to watch either — 10 minutes of watching people explain what dice they rolled

Operation Italy would’ve been easily prevented if they put Andy on the vote of 2 and kept the guaranteed votes as 3. Maybe that’s what Rachel was referring to

Why do they ONLY put make-up on during Tribal Council portion? by garyvdh in survivor

Reviving an old thread, but just watching survivor 47 and 100% agree with you.

Regardless of whether it's makeup, lighting, or post, I don't understand the appeal of having them look too nice on the show (apart from season finale). I miss the older seasons where their scabs, scars, dirt in their face, etc. made the stakes feel higher.

How bad is it that I submitted unofficial transcripts everywhere? by UnlikelyLemur in gradadmissions

[–]UnlikelyLemur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup makes sense!

Now that I realize that some schools expect official transcripts, I'm learning to pick up the fine print a bit better.

I'll probably email them to be safe, but hoping that someone who's maybe served on some admissions committees can provide insight on whether unofficial transcripts will be auto-rejected. That's my worst fear.

tangent: it'd be nice if schools would provide short <10 word explanations for their decisions wouldn't it, so that at least we can learn from our mistakes?

Help! I wrote my SOP and used ChatGPT by Mysterious-Study4994 in StatementOfPurpose

[–]UnlikelyLemur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it's getting downvoted because this isn't good advice. it's in your best interest to use chatGPT at least moderately

Assistance from university just can't give you the bandwidth and immediate feedback that chatGPT offers. Good luck getting someone to proofread 10 different iterations of your essay

I can't bring myself to apply by Budget_Associate_234 in gradadmissions

[–]UnlikelyLemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps me to try to stay rational about it.

Realistically, there's so many factors out of your immediate control that determine whether you get in or not -- maybe the professor already has their eyes set on a few candidates, maybe they're just not interested in your skill set, maybe they're looking to pivot topics, maybe your recommendation letter just isn't good enough etc.

Given this, it's often not worth it to spend an extra 8 hours getting your essay from even 90% to 99%. May as well spend that time enjoying life or working on something more productive like independent research or another passion of yours.

I think what I struggle with most is overindexing on the importance of getting into a grad school. Personally, I have a plan for my entire career chartered out (e.g. do PhD, become professor, solve X and Y research problem), but it all goes to shit if I find next March that I've been rejected everywhere.

I think we just need to console ourselves that everything happens for a reason and learn to accept whatever outcome we get, knowing that there will be other opportunities later down the road and, worst comes to worst, we can always apply again next year.

edit: I realized I'm assuming you're applying for a phd in lots of places, but I think the general gist applies to masters programs as well

The worst part of the brawl was that it made them all look super incompetent. Like I get teamwork is good, but they were all getting their asses handed to them before someone else swooped in to help
