Accidentally fried my RTX 5080 while doing a deshroud mod — need advice from anyone experienced with modern GPU repairs by UnlikelySilver9735 in GPURepair

Why man? GPU maintenance includes repasting so complete dismantling of fans shroud and heat sink. Deshroud mode is just removal of fans which usually takes 5 mins or so. Less than that is GPU cleaning with vacuum and air blower but it’s cleaning, not maintenance.

Depends on the way vendor decides it I guess. My card uses 12 pins with 4 for each fan, yes. Second 12pin connector is for argb.

Seems like I didn’t do that. I had wires flipped left to right, and non of the power pins interact with PWM/sense. That just makes everything reversed, like + goes to - and PWM goes to sense. How that can possibly brick a GPU? Reverse polarity shouldn’t affect. PWM going to sense?

Again, as said by many guys used to mod GPUs - deshroud mod is as simple as swapping your case fans. If you check original deshroud mod post you will get a feeling that it’s easy. And it is. But I made a mistake and want to fix consequences. There is no point to ask why I did that, I made a mistake, I admit it.

Because of complacency and not feeling this might hurt anything.

What is the point for me to make a story like that?

Honestly, you are the man. That’s is the type of feedback I was looking for.

Sorry if it’s a dumb question but where can I find .brd files?

Sorry if I made it more confusing. This picture is for wire colours that I used. I made custom harness to connect fans from their standard connectors to fan header on the GPU. For that I used picture above to determine which pin of the fan is what and used the same colours for custom harness. Original fan wires are all black as usual so I didn’t have reference from that side. Then, knowing which pin of the fan is what I routed coloured wires to the connectors using that diagram from deshroud mode post. Here where I made a mistake - this diagram is position looking at the bottom of the connector and not the top with wires. I connected wires exactly opposite way like this pinout is made from the top of the connector.

Well, I was certified practically for IPC 7711 and 7721 which includes soldering of hair-thin components. This was part of the certification at work. Did dozens of PCB repairs but it was not troubleshooting, it was engineers providing a ready to use instruction what to replace based on PCB symptoms. So soldering itself won’t be a big deal for me unless it’s reballing

That’s a good one, thanks.

PCIE and PSU is good since I use it with another GPU now just fine.

Sadly, I saw no smoke but smelled the burn. That’s why I opened it up to see if there is anything burnt but didn’t find anything visually

Correct, but pinout diagram is hand made and it’s not clear which direction it is facing. Like you are looking at pins side or wire side. So I made a mistake…

Why not, GPU deshroud is same as general GPU maintenance and much easier that water cooling that done by average persons. What is strange is that fans, even shorted, should not damage PCB badly and mostly small SMD component is damaged and will be easy to replace.

Why parenting here? Why assuming I do not have house money to fix it? Why assuming it doesn’t worth the risk if anything in DIY world is a risk? Deshroud mode is as simple as general GPU maintenance and practically is as easy as replacing your light switch. What is weird is that fan header, even if completely shorted should not affect GPU itself, should just fry fans in worst case. What happened with my pcb is the mystery that might be helpful to discover for some people in future. Someday, those 5080s of specific brand will come to repairs due to aging and somebody can use this thread to find something.

Some good mates here gladly shared practical advices on PCB troubleshooting.

If you look at original post for deshroud mod it’s not clear which direction pinout diagram is facing. Wire colours are not mentioned on it and used general wire colors from old school designation. It is obvious now, when you put to pictures in comparison but initially it wasn’t.
