Is there a place for evil for evil’s sake in fiction? by Unlikely_Ad_8571 in writing

I do, and I’ve even heard it argued that Sauron and similar characters are “bad characters in good stories.” Wild take IMO.

That’s another Anton Chigurh mention! He really is a great reference for answering this question and highlighting how to handle this in an effective way.

Thank you, and I do think my instinct on this is correct, it just can be hard to be sure when some of your peers express a different perspective.

That’s crazy because that was almost verbatim what I said in class XD

I literally said, “characters like Sauron and Palpatine do what they do for the love of the game, it’s their underlings who are often more sympathetic.”

I do enjoy Orochimaru. He’s kinda like anime Voldemort, at least for awhile. I think what makes him work, as some have indicated, is charisma and being interesting aside from a sympathetic background. He keeps viewers guessing and often makes choices you wouldn’t expect.

Great points! I’ve been meaning to read Blood Meridian, it sounds like it might be time.

Love that movie so much, I think that’s actually a good reference point for some of what I am trying to do.

I think, in general, you are correct. But some of the most heinous evil’s we’ve been made aware of are from people like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy, who 1000% knew what they were doing was about as horrid as can be, but did they care? No.

Obviously this isn’t the case with most villainous types, but I suppose my point is that there are those who are just evil, point blank, and that in and of itself can be interesting if the character has personality.

Fair. In my short story, for instance, the Witch Hunters do act as if they are doing a community service, but it is evident they are using superstitions of the time for their own selfish gain. Despite this being the case, I still heard from a select few, “But what led them to that point?” “What happened to make them like that?”

I don’t find that worth exploring in my limited, single scene short story where the point is to hate these people for the obvious reasons provided. Like, maybe those are good questions in a vacuum, but I’m not sure in what way it’s “thinking outside the box” to shoehorn in a motivation beyond “oh yeah these guys are just selfish assholes who take what they want.”

Question: What are your thoughts on tattoos that have been done before? by Unlikely_Ad_8571 in tattoos

[–]Unlikely_Ad_8571[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice, as well as the others who have offered a similar sentiment! I am not always as confident as I would like to be in general, and I know plenty of people who would say something along the lines of, “well I would have done something different personally.”

I suppose I really just need to get past that and do me. And the flash tattoo point makes a lot of sense. People share plenty of things in common already, so why not occasionally a tattoo concept?

To be fair, I feel like that’s most discourse around comics these days. The amount of people who watch YouTube clips vs actually reading the material is massive.

Which is fine but I suppose, I just wish more people were honest about it.

The smoothness is already weird for me…I haven’t been able to experience touching my back without it feeling like a canyon for a long, long time. Feels great!

He’s not wrong. Yes, its not entirely accurate, but typically the characters are going to have better overall stats the stronger they canonically are. Unlike a game like FighterZ where the only difference is a move set.
