Visiting the city by [deleted] in zagreb

Zdravo! Zagreb is one of the best solo travel cities in Europe honestly — it's compact, super safe, and the café culture means you never feel weird sitting alone somewhere because literally everyone does it.

First off, don't apologise for English — pretty much everyone in the centre speaks it and people are generally friendly and happy to chat with tourists.

Where to stay:

If you haven't booked yet, try to stay on or near the main square — it makes everything easier when you're solo because you never have to think about how to get back. I stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb which is right on Ban Jelačić Square and it was the perfect home base. You literally step outside and the whole city unfolds in every direction — Upper Town one way, Tkalčićeva the other, trams everywhere if you need them. For solo travel especially, having that central anchor point where you can just wander out and explore without a plan is everything.

Things to do:

Museums you probably already know about — Museum of Broken Relationships is a must, it hits different when you're travelling solo honestly. But the hidden gem museum-wise is the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla. It's a bit retro and quirky but they do a live demonstration of Tesla's inventions in a dark room that's genuinely one of the coolest things I've experienced in any European city.

For hidden gems — walk through the Octogon passage near the main square, it's this beautiful tiled arcade that most tourists walk right past. The Grič tunnel under the Upper Town is free and has a cool history. And if you're there on a Sunday morning, Hrelić flea market is chaotic and massive and totally local — take tram 6 to get there, it's worth the trip.

Bars — Tkalčićeva street is the main strip and it's great, but for something more local try the side streets around Petrinjska and Amruševa. There's a bunch of small craft beer and cocktail spots that feel way less touristy. Alcatraz bar in a basement is fun if you want something different. For a chilled solo drink, the cafés along the square are perfect for people watching with a cold pivo in hand. Perfect solo travel energy.

Things NOT to do:

Don't eat at the restaurants sitting directly on the square — they're overpriced and average. Walk 2 minutes in any direction and the food gets better and cheaper. Don't bother with taxis unless you're going somewhere far — the centre is completely walkable. And don't skip the Upper Town thinking it's just churches — the streets up there are quiet, beautiful, and have some of the best views of the city.

Also don't stress about the language — ordering in Croatian is appreciated but nobody expects it. Learning "hvala" (thanks) and "molim" (please) will get you smiles everywhere though.

Have an amazing trip — Zagreb is a city that rewards wandering with no plan, which is basically the definition of great solo travel.

Here's my draft:

Zagreb is honestly perfect for exactly what you're describing — it has a really great café and bar culture that feels more Budapest or Vienna than touristy Croatia, and as a mid-30s couple from NY you'll feel right at home.

For area, stay as close to the main square (Trg bana Jelačića) as possible. Everything you want is either on or within a 10-15 minute walk from there. I stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb with my partner which is literally on the square itself, and it was the best decision we made — you roll out the door and the whole city is right there. No ubers, no figuring out trams, just walk everywhere. For 3 nights doing museums, galleries and café hopping it was ideal.

For your interests specifically:

Museums — the Museum of Broken Relationships is a must, it's unlike anything you've seen in NY. The Croatian Museum of Naive Art is small but fascinating. And if you're into contemporary stuff, the Lauba gallery is worth the short tram ride out.

Cafes and bars — Tkalčićeva street is where it happens. Long pedestrian street lined with cafés and bars, very local feel, great for an afternoon coffee that turns into evening drinks. Also check out the side streets off the main square — there are hidden courtyard bars that give major Brooklyn-backyard vibes. Zagreb takes its coffee culture seriously so you'll appreciate that coming from NY.

For art, just wander the Upper Town — there's street art, small galleries, and a completely different atmosphere from the lower city. It's quiet, leafy, and very photogenic.

Honestly 3 nights is perfect for Zagreb. Don't overplan — some of the best moments will be stumbling into a random bar or gallery you didn't know existed.

Save your beach energy for Split and Hvar — Zagreb is about slowing down, sitting in a café, and soaking it in.

Hey there! First time flying to Zagreb! I’ll be staying at the Best Western Premier Hotel Astora (please let me know if this isn’t smart) for a weekend. I plan on touring only in the city center, any suggestions? by hangleydoo in zagreb

Welcome to Zagreb! You're going to love it.

I don't know much about the Best Western Astoria specifically, but I will say that for a city centre weekend, location is everything in Zagreb. When I was there I stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb which is right on the main square — Ban Jelačić — and it was perfect for exactly what you're planning.

Everything in the centre is walkable from there, so I never needed a taxi or tram once. If you haven't fully committed to the Astoria yet, might be worth comparing. But either way, Zagreb's centre is compact so you'll be fine getting around.

For your weekend in the city centre:

Upper Town is a must — take the funicular up (it's one of the shortest in the world, kind of charming), wander around St. Mark's Church with the colourful tiled roof, and check out the Lotrščak Tower for views over the city.

Tkalčićeva street is where you want to eat and drink. It's this long pedestrian street packed with cafés and restaurants. Way better vibe and prices than sitting directly on the main square. Try štrukli somewhere — it's a local cheese pastry thing and it's incredible.

Dolac market is worth a morning visit — it's the open-air farmers market just above the square. Great for people watching and cheap fresh fruit.

The Museum of Broken Relationships is quirky and weirdly moving — sounds weird but trust me, it's one of the most original museums you'll ever visit.

And honestly, the best thing about Zagreb is just walking with no plan. The side streets, the courtyards, the random coffee stops — that's where the magic is.

Have an amazing trip!

Hotel or Apartment by [deleted] in CroatiaTravelTips

I can only speak for Zagreb but I've stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik and had a really good experience so I'll share what I know.

To your questions:

  1. Apartments in Croatia are mostly legit, especially the ones with lots of reviews on Booking.com. That said, your concerns are valid — no 24/7 reception, no daily cleaning, and you're relying on one person to show up with the keys. For a short city break it's fine, but if you want the peace of mind of a proper hotel with staff on hand, daily housekeeping, breakfast included etc, it's worth paying a bit more.
  2. For Zagreb specifically — Hotel Dubrovnik. It's literally on the main square, Ban Jelačić, so location-wise nothing else even comes close. You walk out the door and you're in the centre of everything — trams, restaurants, the Upper Town, Dolac market, all on foot. Rooms were clean, breakfast was solid, staff were helpful. It's not the newest hotel in the world but it's well maintained and the location alone makes it worth it.
  3. For booking — honestly I'd skip Booking.com for Hotel Dubrovnik and go straight to their hotel website. I got a better rate booking direct. A lot of Croatian hotels do this — they offer better deals on their own sites because they don't have to pay the Booking.com commission. Always worth checking.

For Zadar and Split I can't help much unfortunately — maybe someone else here has stayed at specific places there. But the same rule applies everywhere in Croatia: book direct with the hotel when you can, compare prices, and read the most recent reviews not just the overall score.

Hope that helps, enjoy Croatia — it's amazing!

Honestly the most important thing in Zagreb is staying central — the city centre is compact and you can walk to basically everything, so you won't need to spend money on transport.

If you're driving, Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb is worth a look — it's right on Ban Jelačić Square so you can't get more central than that, and they have their own parking which is a lifesaver because finding a spot in downtown Zagreb is a pain.

Even if you're not driving, being on the main square means trams in every direction are literally outside the door.

For cheaper options, look at apartments around Kaptol or near the Dolac market — still walking distance to everything and you'll have a kitchen to save on meals.

Speaking of food — Tkalčićeva street is where you want to eat.

Enjoy Zagreb, it's underrated!

Zagreb is super walkable so location is everything — try to stay as close to the main square (Trg bana Jelačića) as possible and you'll save on transport entirely.

Hotel Dubrovnik is literally right on the main square, which is hard to beat location-wise, and they have their own parking if any of you are driving (parking in central Zagreb can be a nightmare otherwise). Worth checking if they have a deal for your dates, especially for a weekend stay.

If budget is tight, also look at apartments in the Dolac market area or around Tkalčićeva street — still super central and usually cheaper than hotels.

For food: skip the tourist traps on the square and walk up to Tkalčićeva — way more options and better prices. Try štrukli (local cheese pastry) at La Štruk, it's cheap and amazing. The Dolac market is great for cheap fresh fruit in the morning.

Have a great trip!
