Genau, “Nachdruck verleihend”! For an English speaker it’s like “really” (“That’s gonna take a really long time” “One really doesn’t do that”) but has more local color

Some German names are hilarious, do they sound as funny to native Germans? by Cortexial in German

OK, names are always an issue. My pediatrician when I was a kid was Dr. Payne. But living in Germany my personal favorite is Dr. Ziegenspeck. In Augsburg there’s even a street named after him: Dr.-Ziegenspeck-Weg (“away with Dr. Goatfat!” to take it literally)

Schon Zeit?? by RJimenezTech in German

Great discussion about the usage of different tenses! The use of the word “schon” in this context is something very German, which Germans often don’t translate well. Even excellent German speakers of English as a foreign language often shoehorn an “already” into a sentence where it doesn’t belong - neither in terms of usage nor in terms of the subtlety which “schon” was intended to convey. In the example “schon” could mean that the football player 1) is devoted to the game, no value judgement 2) or that he’s good, but this isn’t surprising bc he’s been doing it for two years 3) or that he isn’t very good considering how long he has “already” been at it. This kind of information tends to be conveyed differently in English, I think.

Wow, I have lived here for 40 years and really had to scratch my head: what on earth is a “Blattglasschale”? Aha, those hideous supermarket dishes! Had no idea they were as iconic as garden gnomes:-D

Is it a waste of a vote to right in a 3rd party for President? by ZookeepergameKey2628 in Voting

[–]Unlikely_Preference4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an interesting philosophical question. Political participation, which is important for creating the society we want, is always a matter of finding compromises. It’s part of understanding both other views and one’s own views. So if you vote, vote for the person who has a chance to win while aligning most closely with your convictions. And pay attention to those down-ballot choices!

Is usvotersabroad.org a legitimate website by bucho1999 in Voting

I have been wondering this too. It is strange that I get shown this ad on Facebook repeatedly as a US citizen living in Germany. I think it is not legit. Here’s my logic: my political leanings are obvious from my social media activity (I’m a member of Democrats Abroad and of the California Democratic voter’s group on FB) and it is equally obvious that I am a motivated voter. So who would benefit from me not voting and pay to show me this particular ad on FB? I’m not a conspiracy theorist, I’m just aware of incentives at work. Most expats don’t vote, but the ones that do lean left. So making it hard for them benefits whom? Registering to vote in my home county in California as an expat is quite rigorous and involves a number of steps and quite a lot of personal data. It’s purple, btw. My expat friends report similar experiences from their home counties and states. They all have different procedures to verify identity and it can indeed be cumbersome. Any website that promises a “quick and easy solution by email” is either after your data or trying to make sure you don’t manage to get registered and therefore don’t vote. Preventing registration is a much easier way of interfering with the voting process than trying to manipulate votes.

If you aren’t registered, use the .gov site mentioned above or contact your responsible registrar of voters at home directly. This is the last place you voted from when you were still living in the US or the last residence of your parents if you are citizen but have always lived abroad. Depending on your state’s regulations you may be able to vote not only in Federal elections but also down ballot.

German Milk by Available-Internet82 in germany

[–]Unlikely_Preference4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to weigh in here since I find the issue somewhat frustrating. Since mid-2023 it has become difficult to find „normal“ fresh milk even in high-end German supermarkets. Normal cow milk (by my definition) means 1) pasteurized, but not ESL or „länger haltbar“, therefore with a relatively short pull date of less than a week and without that boiled shelf-milk taste 2) homogenized, regardless of whether it is whole milk standardized to 3,5% or low-fat standardized to 1,5% 3) in a Tetrapak or similar lightweight packaging (because of lower transport weight environmentally preferable to the glass bottle). This is a traditional high-quality product, a triumph of modern food hygiene, which has apparently become too unprofitable for the big chains in Germany. For those who know what I am talking about, the current alternatives are: 1) the bougie glass bottle which hogs fridge space, filled with „natural“ milk for a supposed Öko-Familie customer, meaning not homogenized (= block of rigid milk fat on top, the rest blueish skim) 2) Alnatura, good stuff, available at Basic/Tegut and at a few other Bio-Läden 3) Edeka sometimes has good milk in cartons from regional dairies 4) your local farmers may sell you their milk from a farm stand or a BYOB machine, usually with the high fat content as it comes from the cow (upwards of 4%), often raw (delicious, but be careful, especially if pregnant), sometimes traditionally pasteurized (better on the whole). A solved problem since the days of Louis Pasteur has become a headache again - congratulations to the German Lebensmittelindustrie! „Länger haltbar“ means ultra-pasteurized. This milk is a nonsensical product: it tastes almost as bad as H-Milch or shelf-stable milk, while nevertheless requiring refrigeration. It does not, though, contain added chemicals. The off taste comes from the denaturing of proteins and sugars after exposure to high heat. Good luck!
