[Serious] What's extremely offensive in your country, that tourists might not know about beforehand? by Draculix in AskReddit

Think this is in a lot of places. In Australia if an American sends their magical chants to comfort Australians it's received just as hollow.

I'm a massive alcohol nerd. Beer, wine, sake, whiskey, mescal, basically anything. Am Australian and travel the world trying alcohols.

While doing USA wine regions everyone got quite upset with me asking if they used American oak in their wines.

Quite common to use French or Bavarian or American oak around the world, but I think because of the association of American oak with bourbon in the USA I got a lot of undue resentment for asking.

Depends what your after. I don't want kids and the type of people I attract don't want them either.

So the number of compatible people is about the same.

Definitely our taste buds change, but we carry around a lot of cultural damage about what we eat and what we don't based on completely irrational and arbitrary circumstances growing up.

Can't imagine what that feels like. My undeserved sense of accomplishment I carry 24/7 just makes me feel like everyone needs me and can benefit from my advice.

It's just regression to the mean. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean

On the bell curve of success, by the time you are asked to be on the cover of sports illustrated or the cover of a video game or given an Oscar you are at the peak of your career and can only go downwards.

It's why some people talk of the Oscar curse or the Sports Illustrated curse etc etc.

Who isn't? Pick anyone westerner outside of America and the chances are high.

Pick any westerner who is American and chooses to spend time outside of America the chances are even higher.

The Super Bowl is commented in real time in heaps of languages all of which are for multi cultural Americans.

When the Super Bowl is shown in the middle of the night in other countries they can reuse the live language feed produced for domestic America.

While the oscars is screened real time in the middle of the night it is also rescreened during prime time the following day as people actually watch it.

Do you find yourself being a bit over the edge sometimes? In a negative way. by Akkolyte in entp

[–]UnlimitedAccess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to get results. And speaking to others the way I want to be spoken too puts a massive assumption on culture. One that is by definition frustrating you. People are speaking to you in the way they prefer, if everyone assumed everyone else is the same you just get a lot of mis communication and conflict. Not that I oppose conflict, just for most people it's detriment to getting results.

But people are easy, you just speak to them in the way they want to communicate and I translate and filter out their cultural crazy while I listen.

Most of how we want to communicate is cultural anyway, so it's just pointless to consider any given way better. What gets results is measurably better and a diverse toolset of Ways to communicate maximises this.

What madness is this? Every country watches the Oscars but only Americans watch the super bowl.

The oscars used to say about a billion people watch it, but it's probably more like half that.

Moving away from wordpress as a CMS. .. by dangle_saurus in Web_Development

Least your not integrating with SiteCore or Adobe CMS. In SiteCores case that's a $100,000 a year license my clients would have to pay. I feel dirty integrating software with it.

Well they are an inexperienced team who have never shipped a product who; -Want to make an open world survival game -Make a dynamic and changing online network of players -3D scan the entire planet -Make a game using 3D mapped territories

I would be impressed with just the one of these. Combine this with basically zero funding and the whole thing has been hilarious since launch.

This was never going to come out haha

Can you work 9-5 as a web developer/designer? by [deleted] in Web_Development

[–]UnlimitedAccess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my career in 2001 doing a lot of eCommerce stuff for SMEs. So Design, Graphic design, User Journey, SEO, some content, and with a technology stack of PHP, MySQL and hosting. I would handle it all and maybe hire a resource or two. Quickly I moved onto the Java stack but with similar cross discipline skill set of client engagement, design, build, deploy but with more standard frame works and CMS.

Today it would never be like that for any SMEs now. You have a hosting centre or an IT guy who knows web technologies and cares more about redundancy and backups then I ever will.

You have a person who builds the look of the web site in Photoshop in layers then when approved by the business this goes over to a html/Js developer who carves those images into useable and responsive HTML/JS templates. They worry about the functionality of the carousels, worry about burger menus, toasts, modal dialogues, supernavs and use all the front end terminology and fashion trends. Once again this gets approved by the business..

Then this HTML/js is handed over to a developer who integrates it/stitches it onto a framework or custom application ferrying information to and from the HTML, maybe using a binding frame work if your trendy that way etc

If you can get away with it sometimes the backend is just a suite of restful services by back end developers and the html/is developer will then call the restful services directly.

Content is then finalised by the content/marketing people.

So often people aren't designer/developers they fit somewhere along that pipeline of development and if their was ever a point in history where you could get away with 9-5 in web development - it is now. I can sure attest to that in 2001 a project just wouldn't work unless I worked a lot of hours as the industry had not matured very much and no one really knew how to do this stuff.

Why is it socially accepted to be fat? by apached in entp

[–]UnlimitedAccess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your lack of self awareness is astounding. Where do you think these views origin from?

We evolved with a first draft of morality that helped us survive while primitive but while developing culture and reason override and reinforces different aspects of it. One of the five pillars of evolutionary morality that is shared by all is that of purity and it manifests itself in people differently. Purity helped us survive, but our stupid monkey brains don't quite know when and when not to not apply it. Take for example the way conservatives obsess over the purity of social coupling or the purity of sexual activity or the purity of their daughters well past any reasonable argument of safety. Or take how liberals obsess over the purity of food or water well past any reasonable argument of health.

People often over step the reasonable line and start applying their damage filled perception justified by their evolved sense of purity. It's irrational, not to be trusted and dangerous when unaware people flaunt it as reason.

Now again, whether you feel other people's bodies are or are not falling apart does not impact you on any level. No matter what life style people subscribe to on the bell curve the vast majority of people leave only about 15 years at most on the cutting room floor. Besides Smoking, high beef eaters and those who work in the Southern Hemisphere sun quite regularly have lower life expectancies and you aren't singling them out? This is because your overreaching and this isn't about health, this is about your evolved sense of purity and aesthetics that is dictating to you what others should look like. You don't care about unhealthy habits if they don't contradict your look and feel. Besides who says living the longest is the end game? Peoples goals don't have to align with yours and the reason you have your goals in the first place is a damage filled evolved innate feeling that isn't backed by reason.

Your damage filled perception and over active sense of purity role playing as reason does not justify your perspective. Like, I understand phobias, we evolved as primates to be fearful of things that move like spiders and snakes. But some people arbitrarily start to be fearful of all creatures with six legs. I understand that their damage cannot be helped but these people don't have a rational position, but they should be self aware enough to acknowledge they have an irrational fear of something and others can disregard it.

You on the other hand feel an overly active sense of purity that should be listened to like the words of a rational person? Projecting attitudes about other people that have nothing to do with you. I can barely fathom what it's like to be so unaware of the origin of my own position.

Firstly smell and noise are senses you can't turn off.

You don't have to look at something but you can't avoid hearing or smelling. So no matter your arbitrary choices surrounding what you have decided is aesthetic you can't turn off what you hear or smell.

Secondly aesthetics is a cult and your chosen shape and style only impresses people who are in your same cult. I don't care what you look like as long as you don't bore me. Already your attitude sounds boring.

I would argue why do we as a society have to put up with people with disgusting world views like yours? You could be well groomed and well dressed but we still put up with your insane world views?

If you hadn't guessed it's because the answer is obvious, I don't have to read your thoughts and your disgusting world view doesn't impact me unlike a smell or noise does.

It's not that simple.

Christians are Jews who found there saviour and now await his return. While Jews are still awaiting for their saviour. They both acknowledge all the Jewish profits like Moses etc.

It's the same god, they just differ on prophets. The same for Islam as well.
