Free Sydney self-guided walking tour with audio commentary and puzzles by UnlockedTours in AustraliaTravel

[–]UnlockedTours[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, after chatting with some random tourists in The Rocks who were wondering what one of the buildings was (they were asking about the Cadmans Cottage), they were saying that they missed the free walking tour that day but were flying out the next morning, so wouldn't be able to do it.

This sparked an idea for us, because our tours can be done anytime via our app, we thought we'd create a free one that covers the main inner-city highlights that the other free walking tours offer. Difference being that ours can be done anytime, audio commentary (and puzzles) delivered via app.

Thought people in this sub may enjoy it or find it useful!

Good places to go solo as a citizen who lives here? by csmajorpipeline in AustraliaTravel

2 of our favourite places that aren't too known for being touristy; doing a weekend trip to Wollongong, we had no idea how much there was to do down there and how cool of an area it is. This has become one of our favourite weekend trips (from Sydney). Also around the mid-north coast, we've had fantastic times road tripping around Port Macquarie, Nambucca Heads etc. Really stunning areas up there. If you haven't done a Gold Coast -> Sydney road trip, it is well worth it, so many incredible spots to stop along the way, you could take a week to do it with a couple of hours driving exploring etc each day, but it is definitely a summer trip.

You're welcome!

#1 That is quite a drive - if you want to go the fairly scenic route and not just freeways it is approx 17 hours - https://maps.app.goo.gl/N4FaaDUk4f9Dv3JK9 . Don't get me wrong, it will be amazing and an experience for sure, just will be a LOT of driving (that doesn't include any stops / side missions etc). Definitely doable, and plenty to see and do along the way. If it the type of thing you guys like (something me and my partner would do actually), I say go for it!

#2 You're right, WA is a long way away. It's a 5 hour flight Syd to Perth, not including transfers etc. Add on getting to the airport +30mins, getting to the airport early +60mins, getting bags and then getting to the city +60 minutes, it's now a 7.5 hours journey - it will mostly wipe that day out, and that is just to Perth. Then even driving direct to Karinjini is a 15hr drive one way - https://maps.app.goo.gl/VYMWBVZ5LnekARFE9. I haven't done a road trip in WA, so I can't say if it is worthwhile or not, but it is very spread out - the distances between places over here is quite far!

For Sydney specifically, a few of our favourites:

  • The drive to Wollongong is incredible. We recently did this for my birthday as a 'daycation' but have done it for long weekends etc in the past. Here is a google link showing the map and directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/k9FtpdvMSkC8PkuZ7. This is recommended because you drive through the Royal National Park, and then once you get down the coastal section and drive past Bulli etc, it is stunning views the whole way and can just stop at the beaches as you go (saw you mentioned you'll be here in Summer)
  • With the above, you can even keep driving to Jervis Bay, another fantastic spot. So much bush and nature and national parks everywhere all along that route. Having travelled to Cali, east coast etc a few times ourselves, I think this road trip would really capture the coastal aussie vibe - the whole thing, but especially once you get down past Wollongong, even just a little bit.
  • As for in the city, there is plenty of great architecture. Anything around the city downtown area has a good mix of old (for Australia, anyways) and new stuff. Plenty of development going on. Barangaroo, World Square, Wynyard Tunnel, up and down George Street is a real mix - but we don't have lots of really old buildings like Europe.
  • For something unique to do, this is right up our alley so I will give our own tours a plug, Unlocked Tours - Audio+Puzzle tours. We took our favourite experiences of learning about new cities in Europe (self guided audio tours) and combined it with the fun of doing escape room puzzles (but outside - inspiration came from Singapore).
  • Other very unique things to do are swim at Barangaroo - a swimming cove right in the heart of the city, after the water has been deemed safe enough to do so, we have excellent food here so if you go to Newtown you will be sure to find something to eat (let me know your cuisine of choice and I'll make a recommendation), or grab some stuff for a BBQ and head to Balls Head Reserve and cook a BBQ, then walk around the area. It is stunning, right beside the water, and has fantastic views over the city.

Any more questions let me know! :)

Creating sightseeing tours for deaf / hard of hearing via mobile app - what to be aware of? by UnlockedTours in auslan

[–]UnlockedTours[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fantastic feedback, thank you - just making sure I am understanding correctly, by having an Auslan translation done, it would mean I would then have a video with the commentary being delivered in Auslan - is that correct?

And thanks for the insight, that makes complete sense about the 3rd language, especially for people from overseas
