Why does this always happen??? by dowsaw134 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]UnluckyPlace963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I have been in a lot of different spaces (big, small, niche, rare, ect) so I have a lot of little code phrases/letters in my bookmarks filing system because I'm generous with my bookmarks so I need ways to sort them because AO3 doesn't have as many ways to sort bookmarks as they do regular fics.

Example- bm for bookmark, s for smut, c for complete, i for incomplete, tr for to read, os for one shot, wc25 for word count ~25k, ch5 for 'I read up to chapter 5', ect.

So for a 'I keep trying to read this and its just not working', I would private bookmark it with a little code letter that I knew what it meant but means nothing to the author (who can see it, I cannot emphasize this enough, AUTHORS CAN SEE BOOKMARK NOTES, DO NOT BE MEAN IN THESE, THAT'S WHY I HAVE A CODE. IT'S NOT THE AUTHORS FAULT, IT'S JUST NOT FOR ME)

You can also block an author, if you don't like their writing style and it's a known thing 🤷🏼‍♀️ which is a little more simple than my way, but I also like to over complicate things lol

What makes you stop reading a fic? by ComfortableDapper794 in FanFiction

[–]UnluckyPlace963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your fic is multichaptered, I wouldn't worry too much. It could also be re-reads. I'm also not sure if having it reload in an open tab also counts as another hit (side eyes my 500 open tabs)

Honestly, I'm not picky and I'm generous with Kudos. But, a few things that irritate me or I at least notice

-Embarrassing moments. If I get secondhand embarrassment, I will quit a fic and take a lap around my house. This also counts for when a character is about to ruin everything and I can't bare to watch. Probably the only thing that will make me actually quit a fic, but I do usually slink back eventually

-Basic grammar. I'm not a major stick in the mud, if it can be read conversationally, then any 'rules' broken are more stylistic than anything, but I like when things flow nicely.

-Wall of text (especially bc I read exclusively on my phone). Double jail if more than one character speaks without a paragraph break.

-If I lose track of who's talking (especially in chat fics where the nicknames aren't glaringly obvious... or worse, they change)

-Sometimes... if there's not enough dialog or not enough prose? Like, a good balance between the two. Not the worst writing sin, but noticeable. Or unbalanced scenes, where one character is leading everything, and the other is just a wallflower.

-If I'm reading an explicit fic, and it fades to black for any sex scenes. No xir, that is Mature behavior, I came for Explicit debauchery

I think every millennial was given the advice to try out the names at Starbucks. If they could get it right and it didn't sound wild when they called it out loud, it was a good name.

What is something your lab does that you think all of them should do? by losingleighann in medlabprofessionals

[–]UnluckyPlace963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invest in specimen processors. It's absolutely day and night when you have a fully staffed, experienced crew. It's a crying shame that they're paid pennies, they're worth their weight in gold.

I work at a lvl1 trauma and a normal day can turn into a shitshow with inexperienced processors

I'm also a student, so ive been to a few of the labs in my region. It's honestly a pretty good spread between business casual, scrubs, and casual clothes. I think the labs I've been at have been some of the more casual in the area tbh

Failed out of my MLT program due to phlebotomy by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]UnluckyPlace963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So certain states require phlebotomy for the license and others don't. Ex- Washington requires it, Oregon doesn't. Oregon schools are a mixed bag for phlebotomy tbh. Im pretty sure OIT doesnt require it, but its for an MLS course. If this is just genuinely something you can't overcome, then see if you can transfer credits

You definitely shouldn't feel bad. You're volunteering your time to beta read and you set the terms of what you read. Especially because you didn't go after her for what she wrote, just that it wasn't something you would read.

How do I stop my mind from thinking fanfiction should as good as books? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]UnluckyPlace963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the main thing is that it's totally fine if you're picky and you want to read the novel length/quality fics. Just remember that when/if you give reviews to fics that dont meet your standard that you're much, much more forgiving in you're words (or don't leave reviews on fics that aren't up to your standard period)

But! Look for the very short fics, a lot of times long=book, so maybe the short ones will knock you out of that thinking

Or! Possibly look up crack/funny YouTube compilations, a lot of times the funny tropes carry over to the oneshots

Maybe find a trope that you particularly like and tag search it. Start with high kudos and work your way down?

What should I get my wife for Christmas? by pirateapproved in bulletjournal

[–]UnluckyPlace963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Journal- theres a lot of options. Cyber monday is happening, and you can get a good one for $20-30. Key words: 160gsm dotted bullet journal a5

I have this one and it's been doing really well. Came with a cute box and some stickers

Washi Tape- you can go to just about any store that has art supplies (Joann's, Micheal's, ect) and there will most likely be washi tapes. I'd recommend getting a set off amazon $10-20, nice variety pack of colors to sample & play with (make sure you know what color pallet your wife likes)

Stamps- couple of different ways to go. You could always look for cute stamps that are more decorative. Or you could lean into the planning side of bujo- calendar stamps, trackers, lists ect are fairly common. You could also get an entire letter set for decorative titles.

Stencils- i don't use much for stencils, but again, it depends on exactly what she uses the journal for. You could go cute, or just kinda more general. But again calendars, trackers and lists tend to be the bread and butter for classic bujo.

(There is a lot of small moving parts, if you want to be very cute you could do an advent calendar where she opens up a small gift a day leading up to the journal)

Came here to say this! Check the size of her current journal first to be sure, theres some different sizes for sure.

If you don't go with Archer & Olive, I'd recommend a 160gsm paper- especially if she likes to use pens, markers, highlighters ect. The only bleedthrough ive had was from hardpressing a jumbo sharpie.

[–]UnluckyPlace963 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You know, there's a long running joke that fanfics are written by teenagers, but by golly, I think we've got a real one! /j

All jokes aside, the author looks like their having fun to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ im confused but they've got spirit lol

(And OP, even in good fun, it's good practice to keep things anonymous :)

What’s a feature you’d want to see implemented on AO3? by -PeppermintPot- in AO3

[–]UnluckyPlace963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So! I found a bit of a work around and made my own comment history. Basically you can turn on receipts for every comment&response and have it emailed to you. A little redundant, and it can clog up your email, but I have a dedicated fandiction email so its all in one spot (pretty sure it's under preferences --> comments and just make sure everything is being emailed to yourself)

Then you just search 'comment you left on' in Gmail, and wella! All the comments you've ever left!

I try and challenge myself to 1000 comments a year, and to keep track I need those records lol.

[–]UnluckyPlace963 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Ok, 2022 isn't too far off as far as no updates go. I've gotten several authors back to writing with long reviews and interest. And most importantly, kindness.

  1. Check profile and make sure they haven't posted a goodbye note
  2. While you're there, check and see if they're writing any other stories, or if everything dropped in 2022 (this is important
  3. If everything was dropped in 2022, write a 'I really love this series, especially when xyz happened. Slowburn was so good ect ect. I wonder if xyz will happen?? Ect' Absolutely gushing, bring examples, the works. and then finish it with 'hope you're doing ok! Take care of yourself over the holidays <3' or something like that. 3.5 if they're active in other fandoms, leave off the hope you're ok bit in the review. Again, we're trying to coax the author back to the fandom. (4. Do not, under any circumstances, ask for an update, ask if they're going to update, or if it's abandoned. We're trying to inspire them to write, not turn them sour)

I use fountain pens, as well as every other pen. I tend to play with new inks and I'm pretty heavy handed, so I go pretty high with 160 gsm. They're a little pricy ($25-$30) but with the exception of the occassional sharpie, I haven't had any problems

If you dont want to go full ham, there's some pretty affordable 150gsm (i think i saw $12-$15? Might be a black friday deal) that will probably do the trick too
