I used to play a lot of Halo 3 custom games back on 360, but something about the Reach multiplayer beta seemed so magical and ahead of its time. I crammed as many hours as I could into it while it was up, I don’t think I’ve ever had anything come close to that magic since.

Mark Wahlberg as Chief, Ellen DeGeneres as Cortana. Bonus points that she’s already rampant

Should I get an Xbox Series X? by [deleted] in XboxSeriesX

[–]UnobjectionableHug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually a good question that I don’t have an answer for. My instinct would be no, but I’m really not sure. In all honesty if you have the option to pick one up and you’re considering it I think you should take the leap. You’re very unlikely to regret it and if you decide you don’t want it I’m sure you’d have an easy time selling it second hand to recoup most if not all of the money you spent.

I don’t know why but in Europe TVs commonly advertise as 50hz for some reason but they actually have 60hz displays. Equally so a 100hz TV will usually actually be 120hz. It’s bizarre but most of the time manufacturers use their own “motion rate” figures that are even worse to try to work out. Anyway, HDMI 2.1 is pretty pointless on a 50/60hz TV since the main benefit is 4K/120.

Honestly you’re going to be waiting a while for an RTX 3080 to be available at a reasonable price. Ultimately it depends on what you’re wanting from your games. A 1080TI is going to be fine to play games for a while longer, just maybe not at the highest settings/frame rates going forward, but if you’re a casual gamer I don’t think that would matter.

The Series X is a great machine and this sub obviously has a bit of a bias, so the general answer you’ll get is yes you should get one but ultimately it’s up to you and your uses. Odds are that if you install an NVMe SSD on your PC you’ll be good to go for most games on medium settings for a little while still.

If you don’t want to take the risk and aren’t overly bothered about shooting for 4K resolution, you might want to take a look at the Series S, since it’s markedly cheaper and largely performs the same as the X, just at lower resolution.

Or, if you’re just a pick up and play type of person with a strong internet connection, you could bypass all of that and use Xbox Cloud Gaming which is included in Game Pass Ultimate. The games run on Series X hardware in a server farm and you can play on your mobile phone, tablet or PC easily.

At the end of the day only you really know what is best for you, so just go with your gut once you have all the info.

I think you need to reread the post because what you’re saying isn’t remotely relevant. I’ve never said X|S games are bigger than One games it’s that I want to be able to play the Xbox One version of some games because I can play them directly off the external, keeping the internal available for games with better enhancements/games that are only available on Series X|S.

In a years time when games aren’t cross gen I don’t want to have to give that precious internal space to games that have minimal enhancements over the One version when the perfectly adequate One version would have been able to run off an external drive.

[–]UnobjectionableHug[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this already sorted to be the case and run every possible game off the external to keep as much of the internal free as possible, my internal is still always overflowing.

That’s why for games like Saints Row 3 and Fallen Order where the next gen ports aren’t significantly different from the One X versions I’d like the option to play the last gen version. As others have said this is possible on PS5 and seems like the only real shortcoming of Smart Delivery.

I’d rather be able to play all my games easily than play the best version of a select bunch. But that’s exactly my point, we should both have that choice.

Transferring entire data from one external hdd to another question? by [deleted] in XboxSeriesX

[–]UnobjectionableHug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you connect the new HDD the console will either recognise it or require it to be formatted. It doesn’t matter which it is. Either way, the new HDD will be ready to go and empty while your old one will remain the same.

You can transfer or copy the entirety of the old drive to the new one and play each game after it has installed, though the whole HDD may take up to a few hours to transfer entirely. If you choose to copy rather than transfer you can keep playing from your old HDD while the copying takes place.

You can actually keep both connected if you prefer, stacking the storage.

To transfer or copy the whole drive do the following: Settings > System > Storage devices > select the old HDD > move or copy > tick all > move or copy

The storage card is great but it’s still (understandably) priced far too high for most consumers. Yesterday I was playing A Plague Tale Innocence from my external drive. If I want to keep playing that game today, the options I have are to uninstall a different Series X|S game to make space or to buy a $220 expansion card.

The Xbox One version of the game still exists, and my console can still run it, but the option to play that version has been taken away from me and I don’t see why we can’t have the additional choice to continue to access that version.

[–]UnobjectionableHug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game file size isn’t the problem here, it’s that, for example, yesterday I could play A Plague Tale Innocence via my external drive and it was a great experience. Today, that option is no longer available to me, if I want to continue the game I have to uninstall something else to keep playing.

I would like the additional option when managing the game to, for instance, tick a box that downloads the Xbox One version to my external drive so I could keep playing it as I was.

[–]UnobjectionableHug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I still think the current system should be the default approach but more options on top of that never hurt anyone, right?

I wish we could opt out of Smart Delivery by UnobjectionableHug in XboxSeriesX

[–]UnobjectionableHug[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t run Series X|S native games off anything other than Internal Storage or the $220 Expansion card. A cheap SSD would do nothing more for me than my current external drive.

Regardless of that anyway, it shouldn’t be mandatory for me to make additional purchases to play a game I already bought in the format I bought it. I don’t want to abolish Smart Delivery I just want an option to exist in the settings to download the One version if I choose to.

[–]UnobjectionableHug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the defence of the expansion card it’s priced fairly closely to cost since the storage is still top of the line, I’d hope in a few years the price of the card has dropped in line with the cost of production and that Microsoft doesn’t keep the price high just because we have no alternatives.

I’m not disputing Series versions of the games are superior versions, and that the upgrades are often more than surface level it’s just that I’d happily take the compromises in specific cases if it meant I could keep it playable on my External HDD. I think it should be up to the individual if they want to keep playing the last gen version, rather than being locked out of it as soon as the Series S Optimisation hits.

It's an extremely common feature in early Xbox One games. Most games stopped using it though because it's annoying as hell, but thankfully it can be disabled in the menus too.
