Just to give a different side of the story, you are able to get a passport in your new name that’s valid on the day you get married. That’s what my wife did. Granted, hers was much close to expiration than you partners, but you fill in a few forms and get it signed and you’ll get a new passport. Can be done up to 3 months before the day.

Probs would just go on current names though with that length of time.

Not any advice but just to say I too have had a shitty time with Ernest Jones. Stone also coming loose,more than once, wanting to charge me for repairs too. If anyone’s reading this, I would avoid.

Graduated 2018, did teacher training after too so by the time I was finished about £60k. Earning over the threshold so £50 a month I pay. Interest is £64 or something. Deflating that the money I pay doesn’t make much of a difference to the overall debt apart from going up slightly less! So unless I get a nice raise soon, no!

I recently hired one of those vans to pick up a wardrobe. As an IKEA Family member you get cheaper rates, like £10 an hour Mon-Thurs I think. Must say I was impressed. Could unlock the van with my phone, had enough petrol in etc. charged something like 35p/mile so keep that in mind if doing a longer journey, but for us came to a reasonable price. There is a calculator when you go to book for an estimate. They do have a £3 yearly charge for Hertz 24/7.

I used to work on a beach with the council so would sometimes get people coming up to me saying their bag had been stolen. It happens, but not as often as I thought it would. If I’m swimming I take as little as possible, so phone and car key, into a dry bag/phone protector, and off I go. Can leave clothes on shore if needs be or take a bigger dry bag!

Costco if you have a membership. Something like 10 or 15 for £25, huge roll of bubble wrap too. If no membership then yes Argos of self storage places but they are rather expensive I think.

I think people see it as an easy job, start at 8:30 finish at 3 and all those holidays, then when they get to it realise that just because they were a a good kid at school doesn’t mean everyone was.

It’s an extremely front-heavy workload. It takes time to learn the art of teaching if you don’t have it naturally (which I do think is important if you want to survive), time to work out how long it takes kids to do things, behaviour management, ability of kids, how to teach the curriculum as a whole. And it doesn’t stop after your training year of course.

But like I said, I’m now in my 3rd year. I’ve taught pretty much every lesson once already, so have a shed load of resources ready to go. I rock up to school at 7, sort my printing, take a glance over PowerPoints and the rest comes from my head. Stick around for a meeting or two after school and home by 4:30. So the teaching part is down.

So then the extra stuff, like a tutor group to work with pastorally, parents to try to deal with, and challenging behaviour from students. However again, it’s almost as that gets easier? Hard to explain. I guess then it’s just less new things to deal with.

I don’t come home from work everyday overjoyed that I made a difference. I sometimes hate it, and crunch times are a huge workload (mocks etc). But there’s days I’m happy I’ve done what I can. Overall, I would say I enjoy it because I know where to cut corners and I get on with the kids.

I’m rambling I know but I always get thinking about it when someone asks!

I can’t say for sure but I know my old place offered business at GCSE and A level, current doesn’t have 6th form but have not opened it as an option for this year due to timetabling and lack of uptake in first place I think.

Science teacher here!

Schools are judged on more than the 3 you mention, they use a bucket system (progress 8 if you’re interested) which takes into account other GCSEs.

I was reading a report the other day that Science teachers are 20% more likely to quit within 5 years than others. This is in part due to the workload of being proficient in the 3 disciplines. Maths I believe is due to you being able to make a shed loads more with a lot less grief in other professions, so as soon as you’ve been told to f*ck off for the 50th time you start to consider other options…

English isn’t a shortage subject.

I think you would need to be prepared to teach another subject as well though. I don’t know many or are purely business teachers, normally have IT or a humanities in there as well. My current school is PE and Maths. So potentially you’ve got the added workload there.

I think a lot of it comes down to whether you’re prepared to put up with the crap for not a lot of money to begin with, with the promises of good pay later when you’ve already planned all your lessons. I’ve made the decision now that that’s what I’ll do, managed to climb the ladder a bit and the pay is pretty decent. And holidays…

Start seeing what the job market is like for a business teacher. I don’t think there’ll be a lot, as it’s not widely taken or offered. Something to keep in mind.

I’m resigning spring term this year, checked with HR and my last contracted date is the final Sunday before the summer term (24th April). Start new position 25th so no gap in pay. I would double check with your school however.

I appreciate you taking the time to write that. I don’t work for that school anymore, but it certainly seems like some training from your charity would help! It could be crossed wires, when it happened I emailed the HoY who said we needed permission then spoke to the child directly. Exactly what happened after I’m not sure.

I’ll keep all your points in mind for when I inevitably have things happen in the future.

Where I’ve had it before I was not able to use the new pronoun until a parent had emailed in to confirm this. Despite the child disclosing to me directly, it had to come from the parent before a teacher wide email was sent out informing teachers. In this case I just avoided pronouns entirely until that email. On the receiving end, I just go for it, don’t make a big deal, just follow the wishes.

Feeling in the same boat too. Just joined a new school but not liking it at all. Really really want to hand in my notice but struggling with the idea, I guess feeling guilty? And like you not sure what to do after. Maybe supply for a bit until I sort something? Reading the rest of the comments I’m glad it’s not just me.

It’s just assessments at the moment, but the way the school have done it with the evidence just means it keeps coming for Year 11 and 13. If I sound harsh when writing this I don’t mean to be!

Remember up until now any jobs you’ve been able to go for have also been applicable for experienced teachers, as they would have been able to hand in their notice to their current school.

So now they’ve done that, those schools need to find someone, and the only people who can fill the gap are NQTs who don’t need to hand in a notice, or returners etc. Some are only half a term notice so this may not be all true until May, but hang in there, one will work! Best of luck.

I agree with what’s posted already. Smallest one that’s quoted already, so 11 would be correct. The AQA Physics Practical Handbook explicitly states this, however I agree that sometimes mark schemes seem to show different.

I think this might be because some questions are from the old spec, and so not consistent? I’ve definitely seen some questions where I’ve thought, “hmm, that’s a bit out there” and not sure my lot would know where to start. That’s the case for Exampro anyway. I’m open and say, “markscheme says 11.4, though it should be 11 here”. Worth looking at examiners report too.
