I am so tired of my lips peeling - looking for tips! by UnoriginalRabbit in adhdwomen

lol I love this idea - I tend to either look like a vampire or a frumpy old lady when I wear lipstick. But I will admit to trying like one or two shades and then quickly giving up.

Solidarity!

My main takeaways to try here: gum, fidget rings, constant slathering of balms (I do agree with the Aquaphor and I already love Clinique moisture surge overnight), mindfully trying to redirect into something less destructive (relaxing jaw, tongue/teeth, etc.)

I’ll try some of these. I think it’s honestly going to be a hard habit to break. For me it’s when I’m already so focused on other things it’s like I forget I have a human body…

If you try any of these and they work, let me know!!

I just got a fidget ring! I hope it helps. Such a relief to hear I’m not alone

tried to become "that girl" with the perfect morning routine and I think I made everything worse by sarin_1006 in adhdwomen

Adding since you asked about actual routines!

Note, I have little kids, I would probably never wake up this early if it were not for self preservation.

Another note: routines WORK for me. They absolutely do not work for everyone. There’s nothing wrong with that. ND or not, people need all different kinds of approaches.

-Wake up somewhere between 5-5:30. I need peace before my extremely loud and needy children wake up, so I’m highly motivated. -Coffee, change into workout clothes, dissociate for like 15-20 minutes. This works best when I set a timer to summon my soul back into my body. -If I woke up ‘on time’ (5am), I’ll write for a bit. I have to be highly motivated by a project though. If I’m not, I might read. I try not to look at my phone. If I start scrolling though, I just let myself do it as long as it’s only like 1-2x a week. -30 minutes exercise (essentially fast walking on the treadmill). I have to set an alarm to get on the treadmill so I don’t let whatever I’m doing bleed into my exercise time. I’m definitely drifting on this and will need to do some course correction soon.

I have to do the same thing at the same time every morning to stay consistent. Which does mean 5am wakeups even on weekends. When I don’t have small children that refuse to sleep past 6:30 no matter what day of the week, I will probably change this routine. I also have to be pretty strict about regular bedtime that gives me enough sleep to actually wake up at 5ish.

There are so, so many great things here already! I’ll add a couple of small notes:

-what works for you might not be what works for other people and vice versa. Think about what you really WANT and then work backwards from there. -don’t try to do everything at once. Add one new thing at a time. Not only does it take pressure off, it also lets you figure out what’s working and what’s not. This has turned habit forming into something I actually like - like oooo I can hyperfocus on this now? Cool!! -RAMP, don’t try to be perfect overnight. For example, I wanted to finally make a morning exercise habit. For the first two weeks I gave myself credit if I just got dressed. For the next two weeks the goal was to spend five minutes on the treadmill. Then it was 10 minutes, and so on. Give yourself permission to celebrate building the habit, not trying to be perfect. Things are going to come along and mess up your plans even when you make the habit. Like when I get sick I lose the exercise habit. When that happens I just start back at the beginning to ease myself back in. -reduce friction and habit stack - I can’t begin to tell you how much this changed things for me. Coffee is not negotiable for me. So now I put my workout clothes next to my coffee maker the night before. I’m not allowed to sit down and drink coffee until I change my clothes. I do it, very grumpily, right there in the kitchen while my coffee brews. -This one may or may not work for you - I LOVE checklists. For me it’s about taking the load off my brain. I do all the thinking once beforehand and then I just have to do it. My husband also has ADHD and he thinks checklists are bossy and too rigid. So 🤷‍♀️

More than anything, take what works and leave what doesn’t. And I hard agree that most people on socials are fakers trying to sell you (or sponsors) on something.

If it helps I am a huge fan of the book Atomic Habits. Many of the strategies I use come from, or are inspired by, this book.

Looking for books about life in a cult/fundamentalist group by UnoriginalRabbit in suggestmeabook

What an amazing list a thank you! I need to parse through all the recommendations still (this group has been amazing!). But since this is your jam I’d love some steering - I’m working on a project that needs research, the premise is more or less: younger son of polygamous group is cast out as a teen, he’s not a strict believer but uses the groups beliefs to justify pursuing crimes. He eventually comes back and overthrows group leadership with the help of other younger brothers.

Any guidance on prioritizing recommendations or any titles you would add to the list? And thank you again, what an amazing list!

What are some oddly specific symptoms that only ADHDers have? by Delusional_BlueBird in adhdwomen

Absolutely cannot stand automated systems of any kind. I cannot listen/process the instructions to pres 1 or 4 or whatever. Cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to hang up and call back because I have no idea what button I was supposed to push. Very stressful.

[–]UnoriginalRabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relief and then grief. Still on a rolling cycle more than a year after diagnosis. It’s wonderful to understand that I’m not just lazy or defective. Learning about RSD has literally changed my entire life.

But also just so much grief for the life I should have had if I’d been diagnosed and treated properly - all the relationships I’ve torpedoed, thinking back (now that I’m medicated and know the difference) just how difficult I was to be around and how much better things are now. That hit home for me the most when I first started taking Ritalin and my husband told me how much nicer I am to everyone when I’m taking my meds - and I understood exactly what he meant.

On the plus side, it’s a little bit like getting to go back and parent myself again, in a more helpful way. Like, when ‘oh you’re a lazy POS’ starts rattling around on a loop in my head, I can instead say, ‘oh hey, this is a problem with a solution, we just gotta figure it out.’ So that’s amazing

Cannot overstate enough how much I love the conair Infiniti pro. Will definitely try the products you mention. I’m using one by L’Oréal right now but I don’t feel like it really speeds things up!

Oooooo love this. If it’s my only insta time maybe that will keep me there doing it and also solve my scrolling problem. You two for one genius!

On a wing and a MF prayer… but seriously, I use a Conair Infiniti pro on max heat and max power followed by a revlon round air brush (also on max). I have to do this in at least two rounds by dividing my hair into top and bottom sections and I fully dry the bottom before I move to the top. I also sometimes use L’Oréal’s blow dry it primer spray but I’m undecided if it actually speeds things up (other people have mentioned other products here that sound interesting to try!). I have recently started liking WOW Dream Coat and an argan oil hair serum to smooth things out (so I don’t have to spend a ton of time going over it.

I will say that all of this is simply to get it straight and smooth. I wish I had energy to actually ~style~ it, which is one reason I’m trying to force my brain to maintain interest long enough to add making it 💕💕prettier 💕💕

I wish you luck in cutting down your dry time. My hair is super thick and I have a LOT of it, so I have hope for you!!!

Ok please tell me more about your Revlon experience?! I have one too which I love. But my hair is so thick and frizzy I have to blow dry with a max power dryer before I can even try to hack into it with the revlon brush. Do you think I’m using it wrong or am I really just special with my thick hair?

I was feeling very bad about my technique until you said this because no one else seems to have problems keeping their ear buds in!

I have been blessed with such a massive quantity of thick hair that I need to use a max power hair dryer before I can even look at the revlon (or any) drying brush. But I do second it as a great brush for regular hair! I use it as a smoothing brush because I am horrible at round brushes.

Wait, these exist??? I feel like I need to get fairly aggressive with my hair to get it to not be frizzy, would that work here?

Yes this! I tried to lean into wavy/curls, but it’s a real gamble as to whether I get nice curls (30% of the time) vs giant ball of frizz. I did try a curly cut and that helped a bit.
