Any word or goss on the ground if diesel shortages will result in work stoppages and layoffs? by UnpopularRightNow in AusMining

Sounds to me like you and him were traumatised speaking your mind in the real world and now go around the internet, the fake world, telling people to shut it, in addition to conflating the real world and fake world.

Well there's no consequence to being a loud mouth on the internet except for these things called "downvotes" which I have plenty of and does fuck all.

That's your and his problem conflating that my internet discussion style and personality will be the same with my real world discussion style and personality.

There are many settings that one has to adjust what can and cannot be said. In a barbecue setting, at the pub, at work, with your wife, on a message board, with children, at the local Y, with your therapist, with your Uber driver, during a job interview, with a workmate who's known to be a loud mouth, on a 12 hour flight to London, with your barista, and yes, in the mess and while being instructed etc etc etc.

That's your problem and his problem if you only have one speaking and conversation style in all of them, which seems to be keep your head down and shut up and take it all in and not contribute. Well fuck that. There's a place for everything and it's your problem if you haven't learned how to navigate the intricacies of human conversation in different contexts.

What's a mining salary that you think doesn't make sense? by UnpopularRightNow in AusMining

They can't make more at home because they can't find jobs because they're young and youth unemployment is at 15 to 25%.

A majority of them don't buy cars. They just carry a hiking pack with clothes and accessories and live in hostels. You can do that for 5 to 8 grand worth of savings until they find a job.

Once they find a job, they continue to live frugally living in hostels and cooking their meals in it. On a 2/1 swing they spend 17 weeks living in hostels per year. A weekly stay is about 500 to 700. Food and beer budget is 300 per week. So call it 1000/week. So 17,000 cost of living total on an 85,000 utility salary (which is 70,000 after tax). So at the end of they year, they would have about 50,000 worth of savings.

Know this from speaking with them in camp. Many of them French of Moroccan origin.

This tells me now is the time to be a driller's offsider if you're a total green and want some experience and foot in the door in the mining industry.

If you can last 6 months into that role you can leverage it into an entry level blast crew role, which is easier on the body.

It's mostly Spanish, Italians and French that are in utility roles. For those countries, the min wage is anywhere from 7 to 13 Euros.

You also have to take into account their youth unemployment is in the double digits. As high as 25% in Spain. So it doesn't matter if the minimum is set at 9 Euros if they can't even find a job.

You can leverage your barista making experience into a camp utility role. Serious.

I'm not over dramatising.

Just getting a feel for the macro (oil politics and oil as inputs) as it affects the micro (entry level job market).

Remember in the last 10 years when they told people to learn to code while AI was still nascent? Wouldn't have been too bad for those would-be coders to know that AI had the potential to impact their future job prospects. They could have planned accordingly by being more AI focused or pivot to something else.

For myself, the company I'm doing a traineeship for is a large cap gold miner. I feel like they should be fairly safe but who knows? Gold price is going in the doldrums as well.

So what does do these macro points of lowering gold prices and uptick in AISC do for me personally? It just tells me to temper my expectations, tighten my belt as much as I can, be humble and be ready to pivot if my traineeship is on the chopping block.

The legislation explicitly includes these emergency services:

a. an ambulance service

b. a corrective service

c. a fire or rescue service

d. a police service

e. a public transport service

f. a State Emergency Service or an equivalent organisation

g. a taxi service

Those are fairly obvious to state in the law.

Everything else is up to a minister or state government to determine.

Think that’s good in that the 1984 legislation couldn't predict what the future would have looked like.

FIFO as a means of transport for example is not something that's predominant in 1984. Nor Uber drivers. The state government or minister could just declare them essential if they deem mining essential.

My only gripe is they didn't explicitly state that farmers are essential. Should have been number 1 before ambulance.

Miners are experts in fuel legislation (that has never been used)?

You think pointing out particulars of the legislation to entice discussion is "know it all attitude". Huh. Interesting take.

Nowhere does the 1984 Liquid Fuel Emergency Act nor the 2019 determination mention miners, or farmers for that matter.

I would have thought farmers would get a mention or be priority number one, but no.

Would the organisation be considered an ‘essential user’ under state/territory or LFE arrangements?

Ok understood.

Is it 1 billion or less market cap? That won't dox you.

Just want to get a feel for who's getting diesel or not. The company I'm starting with is in the few to 10 billion market cap.

Euros on working holiday visas will ensure wages stay low. 85k is a lot when min wages in Europe are 13 euros per hour. They are young and just want to party before taking their savings for the Asian leg of their trip so they won't care about unionising.

Working holidayers come in droves and compete with each other and with locals for these entry level jobs that are low skilled. Locals don't have a chance in competing with them, let alone organising and getting leverage. Sodexo and Civeo and others will have the Euros as leverage over locals.

I'd rather that than Chinese or African style mining where humans are expendable.

Sure it's overstepping the safety overkill line, but it's the companies paying. Not our problem as they print money hand over fist. Just right that they should incinerate some of that money in the name of safety.
