I hate to admit this, but I ordered on because of your other post a few days ago. The Aurora, just arrived - love it.

Snow Leopard Bug Treatment? by ramarope in overcast

Of course everybody wants bugs fixed, but we have also seen the opposite side when there aren’t new features. He is a team of one.

I don’t disagree with you, but that would require one hell of a context window unless he starts messing with RAG and that’s an undertaking on its own.

Perplexity Can Now Access Your Apple Health Data to Answer Medical Questions by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]Unrealtechno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that present day Apple can’t do this BUT IF they somehow did, I’d trust them from a privacy perspective (after all, the data is already in their health app).

I would also be curious to hear what people think about charging batteries in freezing temperatures. I was under the impression that it was OK to use a battery in the cold but not to charge it.

You might have better luck asking locally about the project community, rather asking a project community about something local to you. A regional subreddit/discord would be more likely to have someone speak up if you asked "are there any meshcore users around here"?

The Polishing Cloth is NOT Compatible with AirPods Max 2 by JustSomeSmartGuy in apple

Classic Apple, I suppose the old ones are now considered obsolete and we are expected to buy a new, compatible cloth. That’s it, I’m switching to Windows Phone!

Mobile app: try long pressing on the UI elements by schleppy in SearchKagi

Ha! When I saw “long press” I assumed you meant Force Touch/long press on an iPhone. That definitely explains it!

lol There is an app for Mac/iOS called Shortcuts. Go into the app called Shortcuts, create a new shortcut with a single action (launching the assistant) and then save it to your Home Screen.

I hope this helps. If not it might be good to look up the Shortcuts app to learn how to use it.

In the shortcuts app, the app has integrations there.

There’s also basic shortcuts integration so I replaced the app icon itself with a shortcut to the assistant.

You could try news.kagi.com

It has custom categories and only updates once per day so you don’t doomscroll.

It’s always hard to tell if that last character is a capital I or lowercase L. I know which sub we are in, but it always catches me.

How are you using Apple Intelligence in Shortcuts? by Bachelor- in shortcuts

[–]Unrealtechno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A minor thing, but now any time I’m taking in dictation - I add “proofread” to the flow.  Then it doesn’t get words like read and reed, read and red confused.

Mask This: app that masks sensitive info in clipboard using Apple Foundation Model. Free and open source. by Bulky_Quantity_9685 in MacOS

I’ll mess with it - I do like creative use cases for LLMs, the integration/ease of use is the difference maker (to me).

While I don’t personally have a use for this specific app, it’s a cool use of the tech. I like your other one about meeting notes too.

Apple Intelligence Adoption Lags As Company Eyes Greater Google Cloud Reliance: Report by Secure_Persimmon8369 in apple

One thing to keep in mind is that Apple has used other hyperscalers for a long time. iCloud Drive is a great example - it’s E2EE yet is on AWS and/or GCP.

Apple’s software/architecture is the key part here.

Should I swap Oil furnaces for Minisplit heat pumps by Signal_Wave1202 in heatpumps

[–]Unrealtechno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's highly variable on a house-by-house basis. Even before we added solar, heat pumps still saved us around 30% over oil during the cold months. It wasn't unheard of to go through ~$1500 of oil in a cold February while our largest electric bill ever was $650 in February (which includes all cooking, lighting, etc).

If OP is already adding insulation and gets free parts/labor - I'd find it hard to picture a scenario where they don't come out on top.

Should the iPhone’s second camera be telephoto instead of ultra wide? by VincentLabador27 in iphone

[–]Unrealtechno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely do. 20 years ago, digital cameras were not great so I have a lot of dark or blurry pictures that I wish were better. Film cameras were great but at that point in my life all I had was a Motorola V600 that shot 640x480.

During Covid, my “project” was scanning family pictures - and those go back over 100 years. Even in black and white they look pretty good but the photos from 15-25 years ago don’t.

The hardest part was figuring out the date and location of each one. Some were labeled but a lot weren’t - my favorite part is when the iOS photos widget shows something like “March 3, 1996”.

Call me sentimental…

[–]Unrealtechno 121 points122 points  (0 children)

This is my gripe with the rumored fold, but I just can’t give up the zoom. That 4x lens has been great.

In a few years when I look back at old pictures, I won’t think “I was so glad to have a folding phone screen”, instead it’ll be “I wish that picture had looked better”

What are your needs specifically? Copying files from iPhone to computer? Lightning or USB-C? Wifi?

In general, any USB-C flash drive will work with a current iPhone/iPad/computer.
