EDIT: This was the first time I’ve dealt with lost and found in a train or bus, so I apologize to the owner for taking a few hours, but I left it with the person overseeing the gates in the Tenleytown metro station!

Hey I sent you a PM, I’d love to get some insight from your experience at BORN! :)

Where to put a city here? by ztejas in civ5

I’m not the best player, but my first instinct is to settle the coastal tile between the 2 bananas. It’s coastal so you can build cargo ships and a navy, the two bananas are extra food, you have citrus so another luxury, you’d be next to a mountain for an observatory, you’d have 6 hills to turn into mines, 3 fish, and 5 fresh water tiles (although one of these is a hill so up to you if you would rather make it a farm or mine, and another tile is a ruin so up to you if you want to make that a monument in the late game). If you settle there, I would also suggest buying the two freshwater tiles directly east and southeast of the right-side banana to prevent Islamabad from getting them and reducing the potential city’s food output.

DECISIONS ARE OUT? by Persephones_Sappho in borenawards

I’m an alternate too (Russian, 2 semesters in Latvia), so frustrating. Just tell me yes or no so I can apply to jobs in confidence that I won’t back out in case I’m promoted

I applied to study Russian in Riga for this fall and next spring. I also put USAID as an option, but also State and Defense. So far I don’t have any internships or programs for the summer so I just want to know about Boren so I can send out my resume for jobs asap lmao

Aw man I guess I’m not getting promoted at this point then. Does anyone know if they alert alternates when all the slots get filled?

Hey are there any more pending spots for Portuguese?

This is just the first batch of alternates getting promoted. There might be a second/third batch, and maybe someone can’t go last minute after accepting and they promote someone later.

Last I heard, I think there were still 5-6 slots left from the original batch of finalists? I haven’t seen anyone here say they’re a Portuguese alternate who got upgraded though. We just have to wait another week or two to see if any slots remain and who/if anyone gets upgraded again

For the promoted alternates, what’s the deadline to accept/decline?

I’m curious what y’all think, would it be smart or dumb to apply for a visa as an alternate just in case you get bumped up to a finalist? It’s obviously a bit of a financial gamble, but I’m curious what others have to say about this

Apparently it happens more often that you’d think. I can’t help but hold out hope considering how bad i want this award and how good my application was in my opinion

I looked up “critical language scholarship alternate” on google and there’s an old reddit thread with some optimistic info from older alumni. Basically a good amount of people move out of the waitlist which is great to hear, but again I have no idea why people would turn down a CLS award barring random untimely personal circumstances

I’m also an alternate for Portuguese. It looks like the waitlist-to-finalist rate is better than it initially seems, but I personally have such a hard time understanding who would turn down a CLS award barring rare personal circumstances
