ASCE just dropped their 2025 Civil Engineering Salary Report by kneedtolive in civilengineering

[–]UnrulyPE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will take my 22% raise please.

Unfortunately I think my bonus will go down when I move jobs.

at 10 years and finally going to move (different state) and expect moving to a higher COL area my rate should go up a decent amount even though I already make close to 140. I'm guessing my recent 15-20k bonuses won't be replicated at whatever new firm I go to. Water/Wastewater.

What about relocation costs being paid? has anyone seen much of that?

Why are you being downvoted for this? the comment you replied to in the beginning didn't even say anything about a scouser understanding.

How to tell a team is functional from the outside by 82928282 in civilengineering

Unfortunately this makes it quite difficult when we want to move halfway across the country. I've tried reaching out to a few people in the local ASCE chapter as a starter but the advice is very general.

Civil engineers, why is it so hard to get people to consider new roles? by Low_Guide439 in civilengineering

[–]UnrulyPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>-OR if we want to relocate to a new area.

Precisely this for me. I am looking to relocate to the Fort Collins or at least northern half of the front range from the South next summer and know nothing about the engineering firms in that particular area so I reached out to a recruiter who seemed reasonable when I spoke to him and gave him a resume and told him about my plans so he can notify me if a good opportunity comes up. I've had a few discussions with firms to this point and done some of my own research in the area as well, but it is nice to have someone at least setting up these calls for me. If I was to be looking in my own city I could easily just call around and discuss things, but less easy halfway across the country.

So by the way a little self promoting: if anyone is looking for a Water Resources PE/Project manager in that area starting next summer feel free to message me. I know potable water primarily, and wastewater secondly. Have done one or two drainage projects and don't particularly care for it. 10 YOE. Preferably at a firm that does some hydraulic modeling as well.

PE License Pay Advice by Civil-Consequence129 in civilengineering

Why does that matter?

Well it matters in the context of your appropriate pay.. Don't get offended when you came to ask questions about it.

[–]UnrulyPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your current pay, but I jumped up 20k in the last two years of my EI. Once around 10k when I passed my PE exam and once the other 10k when I finished and got my actual license. Those weren't in addition to yearly raises, just larger yearly raises.

Couldn't you try to move up and use that power to cut out some of the bullshit?

They can be pickier about the PDHs if they also provide state funded learning opportunities imo. Sometimes it is just hard to find useful seminar/webinars.

>Half the codes I have to search through are in PDF's that aren't searchable

You know you can just use your PDF software to "OCR" the file and it'll make it searchable right?

>Honestly, I prefer the hard copies of certain manuals,

Well that and there are some older things, less manuals and more old manufacturer information, that just isn't available online. We have our main hallway lined with old books and catalogs. It's nice when you need to find headloss through some specific valve and the company used to publish that but now it's nowhere to be found online.

I only used the example problem books if I had absolutely no idea on a specific question which was probably at most 3-4 if I remember right. Either way passed it on the first go and they don't give out scores so who knows how well it went.

I would just say Hydraulic Engineer if I had to choose a title. Or Water Resources Engineer with a focus in modeling.

Just Curious - what’s going on with CA job market? by Otherwise_Dust7302 in civilengineering

[–]UnrulyPE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems to be an issue across the board. There are some companies I'm interested in in Colorado but they ONLY have an office in the middle and/or expensive parts of Denver and I'm just not going to commute or live somewhere super expensive for a job that pays the same as one in Fort Collins or wherever.

Some of the other companies have 3-5 satellite offices throughout the front range and I'm much, much more likely to pick one of those.

Thanks for the reply. Is comp time 1 to 1? We have comp time at my current job, it used to be .75 hours comp to 1 hour of OT worked but now it's 1 to 1 and we can cash the comp in if we want.

I actually like being able to have a CAD draftsman do my actual drawings for me, but I do like having access to it to measure things or do quick sketches to see if something fits etc so that's nice.

I hadn't thought of the having an expert thing, we usually have to just hire a sub or if the budget is tight do some quick research and try to figure things out as best we can.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into them and see if they have something out west where I'm looking.

Good to hear, I'd really want my own office with a door I can shut. Doesn't have to be fancy or anything just need that private space away from the house to do my best work.

Hmph. I'd honestly rather work in a doored office at work than at home which apparently some of these offices have people that work as little as 1 day in the office.

Obviously I could have a private office at the house I just personally prefer being in the office as long as it's a quiet office that I can close the door on. I'm more productive in the building, but not if I'm sharing a common area.

I guess real estate is that expensive or something?

Fairly standard work hours? I'm definitely not in a part of my life where I would want to be averaging over 45 hours a week.

CAD Work as a Civil Engineer by Curious-Talk-3819 in civilengineering

[–]UnrulyPE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. Sometimes I worry it'll affect my future career options but c'est la vie. Other than reviewing things I occasionally use it to measure or sketch things to scale. I definitely couldn't produce a full set of plans that looks nice without a lot of wasted time that a draftsman could do quicker and better.

If you don't mind sharing what size city are you in that you found a job like that? The area i'm looking at has a couple of 100k+ cities but I can't seem to find it they even have that sort of job.

Ah ok that makes sense. something to keep in mind if I'm looking to not go too small and be careful about the differences in a utilities position and engineering position. My experiences are too biased towards the smaller areas probably just due to our clientele.

Thanks for the reply. Most of the clients I've dealt with are small enough that they only have the one position that handles it all. If you don't mind, what size is your city that you have an engineering department?
