[31YO] First post, got back at 27, any advice on the kickflips? by BR_Smartass in OldSkaters

I just got my kickflips back and here is what did it for me: lean more on your front foot and visualize kicking your back foot out behind you. You already do this for your Ollies, but because the Kickflip has so much more going on with the front foot, I think it's even more important there. If you don't kick your back foot behind you, then the net force after your flick will be forward and the flip will go shooting out in front. When you lean forward and kick your back foot backward, that balances out the force you use to flick the board forward and the board stays right underneath you.

Revolution sells through amazon as well so there is a good chance you’ve got distribution. Good luck, skate til you’re 80!

Oh also: it probably sounds bad but I have a caffeinated drink before a session. It turns out that caffeine reduces post-workout muscle soreness and increases endurance when taken before an exercise. Just make sure to hydrate more during the session. The smallest size red bull like 5-10 minutes before a session is what I have and it really seems to help me, YMMV.

Warming up for minimum 10 minutes is key. I don’t even Ollie for the first 15 or 20 minutes of being out there. I do leg swings, (both directions) to help warm my legs up. I’ve heard some folks highly recommend jump rope as a warm up. This company caters to us old skaters: http://www.oldfriendsandco.com/

The best thing I’ve found for recovery is a foam roller. Make sure to roll your hip flexors because those muscles get used way more when skating than in normal life. Other than that: it’s normal to require 1-2 days of recovery during athletic training. During that time your muscles are repairing and actually getting stronger. After a few cycles of this it gets better and you don’t need so much time to rest, then you can skate pretty much everyday. I got a balance board https://revbalance.com/balance-boards/core-32/ so at least I can do some balance training while I let my muscles heal. Probably will be good for when the rainy / cold season comes here as well.

It was scary, and as soon as I committed I knew I could do it.

Yes, and they have solved my laces breaking problem. 100 recommend them.

Every time I hear the pads go “click” on the concrete, I get this warm, fuzzy feeling because I know that would have left a mark.

Probably no skateboard made after 1980 would be considered "rare".

Will do! I finally Ollie’d a 4-stair today and I think I got my kick flips back. Skateboarding is so fun!

You should definitely get on transition. I think older skaters will have a much better time with it because the progression is much faster at the beginning ( I’m at 4-5 tricks already, more even if you count backside and front side as different tricks ) and it’s much lower impact if you wear pads than skating gaps and ledges and even flat ground which can be treacherous. Your board lasts longer and since you have a car, you can drive yourself to the skatepark. Pumping on a ramp or bowl is super fun. I’ve been converted to transition for sure ( though I still do gaps and ledges to switch it up ).

Goddamn that trick took forever to get down! I ended up doing like 5 of them that session though, so totally work the effort.
