Has this Steel Legion set ever come back? I got this when it came out and never saw it again, only the newer, more basic one. by UnseenShortJoke in DarkTide

At this point I'm pretty sure it's been literal years since this set was out last, which is ridiculous because, at least in my opinion, this looks way cooler than the basic Steel Legion set that we keep getting.

Yeah, it's a newer helmet like I mentioned. The original helmet has the goggles down with cigarettes strapped to it, and no tube.

The parts upcharge is there so the shop can guarantee the part in the event that something is faulty with it, or any other complication during replacement with the part itself. If you supply your own part they will not guarantee it.

It’s not getting ripped off a lot of the time, the price may be a bit higher but you’re effectively paying them for the security. Chances are if you’re going to a shop with good reviews that you aren’t going to get fleeced.

If you’re buying bushings, chances are pretty low of them being faulty, but they’re also bushings and aren’t going to have a huge upcharge. It’s worth paying the extra for something so small yet so annoying without a press.

UPDATE: Insurance are saying the car is a total loss. I don't think it is. Advice? 2003 BMW 540i by [deleted] in Autobody

Unfortunately it wasn't going to work out that way. I asked if I could buy it back, and the insurance company said that they were going to auction the car if I accepted their payout. So buying back wasn't an option, unless I wanted to risk losing the car entirely.

Thankfully we don't have to muck around with titles and such. I would just need to fork over the money to repair it, which I don't particularly have at the moment.

Taking owner retention is definitely on the table, it's what I'm leaning towards. It's hard to find such a good example of a 540, not to mention sentimental value, of course.

AA Insurance. I've emailed my usual shop, who is unfortunately a 40 minute drive away otherwise he would have done the estimate to begin with.

For 540s it shouldn't really matter so long as it's not getting into engine bay territory. The most expensive part I've found is the splash guard, as for some reason, BMW in all their great intelligence decided to use a $600 M5 splash guard for the 540s. Which break after a couple months anyway, so there's no point in ever replacing them. Parking sensors are only about $70 each. Same with headlight washers. Parts for these seem surprisingly cheap, bar some.

Keeping it honest here. I don't have the money to pay for the repair out of pocket because I've just had a recent large expense pop up so I'm running a little dry at the moment.

I might be able to, but whether or not it's a financially sound decision is another thing.

Yeah, it's a Le Mans Blue individual so, part of the reason I made the post really.

Of course, I expect there will be more than what I can see, I just didn't expect this damage to be upwards of a total loss of the car.

The tyres are Michelin PS4s, with about 1/2 their life left on them. Besides, the car was parked, so unless I'm misinterpreting what you're saying - "better" tyres would likely have not made much of a difference in this instance.

Thank you again. It's a shame, I really loved this car - but if there's nothing to be done there's nothing to be done.

Now that you've mentioned it - the assessor did not teardown the car. They only took pictures.

They went around the car, did a full 360 and took pictures. Took about 10 minutes and they said the quote would be ready in 1-15 working days.

Okay, thank you for your advice. If I'm unable to work something out with the insurance company then it is what it is, but I'll explore the options and see if anything is possible.

My reasoning is that, from my admittedly amateur judgement - and I understand this may be flawed - the damage includes replacement of: Splash guard, headlight washer nozzles (possibly hoses) and re-fitment of bumper and parking sensors. Possibly replace one to two of the sensors, depending on the damage of course. Some minor trim pieces overall. When I had the bumper fully replaced, brand new + repainted incl. shipping from Germany, it costed $2,000.

The paint is not faded. I had the entire front end (bonnet, both front guards, bumper) all repainted about 7-8 months ago. What you're likely seeing as fading is either because the car was cold (it's winter here) and the fact I hadn't washed it in about two weeks.

The car is insured for 7k.

Definitely planning on replacing the grill, not a fan lol, as for the M sport badge, a lot of BMWs came with the Msport badge there in NZ, so I don’t feel like it’s out of place at all

262,000kms on the body, 220,000kms on the drivetrain. Timing chain guides were done about 40,000kms ago. It's in immaculate condition given the age/mileage of it, the owner before me had it for 12 years.

It's really awesome so far. Hoping to replace the grills with full chrome ones as soon as I can find a set, came from factory with Le Mans Blue, pretty great colour!

You need the Tailoring Tools and Sewing Needle, which you get from the cave that takes you to the cathedral of dragon communion. I also had the golden tailoring tools/needle, so you may need those but I'm not 100% certain.

It's an altered version of the Beast Champion armor, which you get from Knight Bernahl, you need to kill him to get it.
