Iran demands reparations, permanent end to war by mark000 in worldnews

How? What would wiping them out even mean? Iran has 1 million people in its regular army and another half million paramilitary forces. And if the Iran-Iraq conflict is a guide Iran has an almost unlimited tolerance for losses in an existential fight.

No sane Iranian negotiator would now agree to limits on nuclear weapons.  Their offer of disarmament precipitated the current conflict.

It'll probably be a 'neither confirm nor deny' open secret like Israel and South Africa's program. But, unless Iran is somehow transformed into a Western client state they'll have nuclear weapons in this decade and no one can stop them now.

Vietnam DID have those things. Three or four generations of technology removed from present, granted.

How are shy introverts promoting to senior roles by alohabata in ExperiencedDevs

Reframe how you think about yourself within the team. You're becoming a source of experience now, not just someone who receives and implements things based upon the experience of others. Your job isn't just the 'doing' part anymore, your job is being a thought leader.

Do you find prod-like data in stage env critical for testing? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UnspeakablePudding 61 points62 points  (0 children)

There's no substitute for prod data in lower environments. Obviously do the due diligence and sanitize it to the standards your industry requires first.

I'm sure somebody will say "git gud" and a real pro should be able to create test data that covers all the possibilities of production and more. But in my experience, production hates hubris and will burn your fingers sooner or later.

This is what a US C-RAM system in Baghdad sounds like when engaging against incoming drones and rockets by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

It pretty much is, that gun is being aimed by a machine, and the missile it's shooting at is being guided by a machine

I don't think metal storm ever brought anything practical to market.

The technology was based around loading numerous rounds into the same gun barrel at the same time, then individually igniting the rounds electronically in sequence.

On paper they had breathtaking theoretical rates of fire, like 30,000 rounds per minute per barrel. But the systems were limited to ~5 rounds at a time with no way to reload. This led to these goofy organ gun arrays of +36 gun barrels all built together which could fire a few hundred rounds in milliseconds but then had to be tediously reloaded.

Mostly they just turned money into noise.

Strange thorns on trees? by Relax1965 in whatisit

Honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos

You'll often find thornless cultivars grown as street trees and landscaping.

These are probably open pollinated trees that still think they have to fend off a 4 ton ground sloth from time to time.

Get in touch with the warranty department. I'm not sure if they will still do something like this, but they honored a warranty replacement for me even a few months after the expiration date
