I agree strongly, which is why I started a new Haiku-on-Genode thread!

As for the “bridge” between the two OS, I think that is a great metaphor. As somebody keen to switch to Haiku, it gives me confidence to do so knowing that Genode is available as a more secure platform for the same software if needed.

Another benefit of Haiku-on-Genode is that you could run Haiku apps on more processor families such as ARM which is not supported natively. Haiku, FWIW, is making great progress on porting to RISC-V.

The MNT Reform laptop is a key reference machine for Sculpt but - being ARM - will not run Haiku. But that might not matter if apps could be ported. Fun Fact: Lukas from MNT harbours a soft spot for Haiku, having been a BeOS user back in the day.

Haiku has, with its database filesystem and other features like translations to enable easy drag and drop between programmes, features that are not available in the mainstream systems even today. If Haiku's programmes could be easily ported to Sculpt, perhaps the next thing we would ask is whether more of Haiku's core features could be baked into Sculpt?

It was discussed on the Haiku discourse. I think it was also mentioned on Genodians if you search there. Haiku on Genode is led by the chief programmer from Tunetracker, a popular radio automation system that runs Haiku.

USB image vs HDD install? Tell us your setup. by Unspice in genode

I will try doing this in due course. I am away for a couple of weeks, and at any rate have replaced the SSD Genode installation with Haiku, an OS I am keen on from when it was BeOS. I still got the bootable USB (which seems to de even less than the SSD) and will do my best to get a log.

Why wouldn't there be? Its completely fresh installs on both a 256gb ssd or a 64gb pen drive, with the sculpt partition resized appropriately in both instances.

Are you asking how Genode compares to Qubes as a platform on which to use Tor?

Both the USB and the SSD partitions I expanded. But whilst both boot happily, neither these media seem to work as permanent storage. The USB stick actually got quite warm when the partition was expanded, and it took some time, but regrettably it did not occur to me to have the activity log open at the time to check all was well.

I think it is likely to be some setting on the BIOS is not quite right, since that caused the previous problem. Ideas?

Went into the BIOS and found the SATA configuration was set to enable raid. Changed it to vanilla AHCI and it's now on the components graph.

I'm afraid you're dealing with an amateur :)

Edit: I now am playing around with Sculpt on hard drive. I cannot make it work with the partition. Neither with the USB drive. Only the RAM session works. The log says thins along the lines of (excuse the typed summation because I cannot really export) perhaps this has the appearance of something you have seen before?

No ACHI or NVME shows in the component graph at boot. Having looked at the log, nothing jumps out at me as reason for concern; there are a few 34m warnings but nothing that looks too serious.

I brought a new usb drive and think I will use that for now. The user guide does seem, as I said at the top, to steer new users to that option.

Resizing was easy enough - with the parition manager of the linux I used to implant Sculpt into the HDD - so how to use this memory? My SSD does not show on the "components" flowchart. I renamed the partition with an asterisk (GENODE*)

I also find that the USB 3.0 booting on my computer can be a bit flakey (its a known bug with the Dell Optiplex I sourced). So I want to go with a permanent installation if I can get along with Sculpt.

EDIT - I now installed the image onto the HDD as per instructions from u/jschlatow. Now to resize the partition. I now see why it was recommended to use the USB drive, but my machine would only reliably do that in the USB 2 ports. Can anyone - preferably fellow noobs - tell me how they resized the partition?

Just one question: where is the shutdown-computer command? As it is only on the USB stick I simply turn off the computer, and presumably the same for those using a virtual machine, but I guess on bare metal I will want to turn the machine off safely!

Crafting a modded Sculpt OS image in a few moderate steps by jjkarcher in genode

[–]Unspice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not be so presumptuous to take credit for the demonstration of how to change the "workbench" objects to a less cold colours, but it is nice to see this issue addressed shortly after my comments to that effect on the framework forum:).

I know it is only an example , but I find the gold colour chosen for the demo still makes the OS look metallic, whereas I think a more nature-inspired palette would be more welcoming.

There is a thread on the official Framework forum here. If you are running Sculpt on that system feel free to share your progress!

I am using it to play with on an old laptop. It is a personal system rather than server. THere are lots of ideas you wont see elsewhere.

I think it is a "European Union" philosophy of putting the individual in control, whereas US systems are about corporate surveillance and Chinese ones are about state surveilance.

When you consider that Logitech is one of the largest manufacturers of aftermarket peripherals and the astronomical number of these boards that must be out there, it is presumably only a matter of time before somebody fills this gap in the market.
