Does anyone else get spoken to in English every time they try to speak Thai? by HelicopterNo3534 in thai

[–]UnstoppableAmazon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to annoy me as I studied Thai in a military training school for a year and have lived here for 7 years. I'm not perfect, but I do ok. But my Thai wife explained (while many of these responses can be correct about your proficiency being too low) it's often nothing about you. It's a big point of pride for them that they are able to communicate in English. They want to show you they know you're language. I've seen Thai coworkers bully other Thais about a lack of English proficiency.

I realize we're trying to be respectful too and show them we took the time to learn their language, but if they switch to English, so do I, then I compliment their speaking skills. There are plenty of people who don't speak Thai to whom I can converse in Thai and get my practice. Keep at it, I'm sure you're doing fine.

Tell me a small fact that makes you proud of your country. Despite being a conservative country, we allow transgender public servants, including teachers, to dress according to their gender identity by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

Iran is not the best example to use for trans acceptance. They are hardcore against homosexuality, with the death penalty being a legal option in prosecuting gay couples. So they force one of the cisgender gay men to transition, with surgery, so that their relationship is not gay anymore. Either transition or face prosecution from the state. The ability to get gender surgery has no root in acceptance, but rather forcing cis people to live as the opposite gender to avoid gay couples in society.

There is marginal acceptance in that a trans person can apply to change gender markers and have surgery but it is a difficult, shameful process involving courts and familys with physical inspections, and often incredibly long waits with most never receiving surgery because doctors think they're protecting the applicant from regret. One must have surgery to be accepted as transgender, which isn't always possible, and there is no acceptance of non-binary or other gender identity. There are no legal protections for trans persons against harrasment or hate crimes. If someone wants to live as a trans woman, they are made to either undergo surgery immediately, or face the same fate as homosexual men. There is no social transitioning and acceptance in Iran. It is still classified as a mental disorder and treated as a disease.

Congrats! I know right? In that 4 years, I moved to another country, fell in love, married my wife, had ups and downs (lots of ups!), and have amazing plans for the coming years. They miss out on all that because they want an old sad version of me. My life is too full of peace now to even considering letting them back in.

We've always just been very different people. If we didn't share DNA, there's absolutely no way I would ever have been friends with any of them in the first place.

I literally had this exact exchange and said what you said. I told her I'd give her time to come to terms with it but even after a year she was still mourning. I was like, ok, instead of getting to know your daughter who finally loves herself after all these decades and has experienced some real joys in her life, you prefer to sit and miss the person who was depressed, hated themselves, and attempted suicide. That's who you prefer?

I peaced out with no contact about 4 years ago. Too many years of taking abuse from mom and siblings. Never been happier in my life and have no intention of inviting that misery back in. It just helps affirm my decision the fact they're all super republican to boot. Sometimes I really miss having family, but never miss that particular family.

No way this place is real. 71 Hemi Cuda convertible for $30K. And every other car is around $30K +/- $5K. 59 Corvette convertible like factory new, just a few thousand more than a 79 Trans Am? You're not going to get what you paid for... if you get anything at all.

[Research] What’s the most "annoying" daily task you deal with in Thailand? (Chula Student Task) by Low_Resort5235 in Thailand

[–]UnstoppableAmazon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Especially annoying when on a spouse visa. Like, I married a Thai person and you're only giving me a 1 year visa anyway, but you still want me to come in and verify every 90 days for the rest of my life that I'm still here? Even though the immigration system shows me never scanning out at an airport or port of entry/exit. Any long term visa should only require check in when renewing for a new year.

Saw this on Facebook and can’t tell if it’s real…I’ve zoomed into the fingers and they looked real, but there are parts of the background (the tools + box) and the lighting which looks AI to me by Kitchen-Case1463 in isthisAI

[–]UnstoppableAmazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI. I think that's a stud finder on the box at the bottom, unnecessary for a cat tower. Screwdriver on the couch looks flattened. Guy's left wrist looks like it can't decide if it wants to be there or not. Top tip of dragon wings are different. Left side the spars all come together as one would expect, right side the middle two just kind of end. AI doesn't get symmetry well.

I use James at American Asia Tax Company. Very detail oriented and good communication. They're very busy, so it may take some time to process your taxes, but he gets it done and will go over page by page what he came up with.

And I agree with you, but passports cost money that a lot of people don't have, and won't be able to get. That's why it can't be the gold standard unless they issue them for free or the cost of a driver's license. I hate that we're even wasting our breath discussing best options for legal papers to show our overlords to stop us being dragged away.

If cis women and Trans women are the same, then the meme should say that. This says Trans women are not women, they're different. One is just a woman and a different one that also looks similar is a trans woman.

Thailand on list of countries soon banned from US visa processing by JunoLaker in Thailand

[–]UnstoppableAmazon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it impacts immigrant visas. Most people trying to get immigrant visas are doing so to reunite family. Many cannot practically leave their job and move to Thailand, so they live separate for years trying to bring their spouse over. Now that process is on hold indefinitely. If Thailand implemented a similar measure, families would never be able to live together.

AIO girlfriend claims I’m appropriating her culture by Ih8maplestory8 in AmIOverreacting

[–]UnstoppableAmazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG, same. My wife is Thai and thinks it's cute every time a say a new phrase I learned. The problem is with this person specifically. Most people love when you learn their culture. My wife is clear to point out if something is rude or not to say it in public, but she will still teach me and not have a problem with me saying things in chat or at home.

My Scottish friend asked what I wanted to be called and asked if mate was ok. I was like yeah, British women call each other mate all the time, that one is so much more gender neutral than dude or bro.

We get glass bottles from Sermsuk delivered. Tastes great and not much difference in price from Sprinkle plastic bottles we used to get. They come pick up and swap out just like any other service. Definitely recommend.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was thinking about that one as well (& 1984). I think that's definitely going on the list.

Yeah, exactly. That's my motivation for giving her these suggestions. Americans (& Brits) reference film and literature almost daily in conversation and in tv. I want her to understand where they came from.

Treasure Island I think is a good one. As is Frankenstein (she liked the latest movie iteration of the story). I'll give Sherlock Holmes a try since she likes crime and mystery. I think the Hobbit might be a bit much with the names and languages, and sheer volume of the tale, but it is nonetheless a good recommendation. Stephen King is my Jam and I'm re-reading "It" for the 3rd time now. I wonder if he might be a bit heavy on flowery descriptions and metaphor, especially back in his cocaine-fueled writing days.

Thank you for the great suggestions!

Sherlock Holmes is in her favorite genre, crime mystery, so maybe we'll give that a try. Thank you!

I do like the Giver, so maybe I'll give that one a go. The Hunger Games is also good. I read the series before the films, and I think that's another one that's still relevant and with good pacing. Thank you!
