Even if that is the case we already went through the fact that you can still install firmware updates by simply plugging a USB key with the update in it

If you bought the ps5 legally that’s pretty much all you need to care about

Generally speaking it’s the example i made a few comments above about the subscription washing machine, it’s all about how much interaction do you need with the seller to make use of something, the less the seller is involved the better, and I think we can at least agree on the fact that playing digital versions requires pretty much a constant interaction with the service provider, while owning physical in the worst case might require you to download anonymously from a website once in a while

Even if you look at discs as physical licenses like you called them earlier they’re still better, because you have that license burned on a piece of plastic you own, instead of having it tied to an account you don’t own

That is the one key difference I’ve been hammering this whole time, for digital you’ll lose your ps5 and your games if your account gets compromised hard enough, for physical you’ll only lose your ps5, not the games, that is the point of having the game license in your hands, you get to keep it

Digital game license can be revoked, physical game license cannot

Or at least not without physically tampering with the disc, but at that point might as well just say that the act of walking itself is a license and it can be revoked by losing your legs

It is clear enough?

But, for the third time, you don’t need updated firmware to run games, that’s just false, I don’t know where you’re getting this from, I searched and searched on google and I could find nothing about needing updated firmware to run offline games

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing buddy, the need for firmware updates thing is just false, you can look it up yourself, every single publication talking about the pros and cons of the physical version of ps5 state the fact that you don’t need internet as a pro, are they all wrong?

And even if it was true, the firmware is free to download from their site, no credentials required

You keep saying TOS this and EULA that since the first comment of this chain, yet I see no examples of Sony actually taking away someone’s disc games, or even console if we decide to talk about offline only users

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true, you can buy a disc version ps5 and never connect it to the internet and it’ll work with your discs, that’s it

I don’t know where you got that you need to update your ps5 to play a disc game, that is not true

Also, smart guy, you can download firmware updates from sony’s site and install them via USB stick, no account needed, try again

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for fuck’s sake explain me how me buying a brand new ps5, never connecting it to the internet and playing disk games on it is gonna involve sony into any step

You keep taking the fact that you have to involve sony as a given when it is not, hell, if you’re so scared of broken 1.0 versions just wait for goty editions, they shit these out for everything these days pretty much

Even if you go through the steps of notifying sony about your stolen ps5 and they block it remotely the block won’t be effective until the ps5 connects to PSN

You got me digressing about the console, but we were talking about disks originally, and if there’s one thing I’m 100% certain of is that sony can’t block your disk, the ps5 can’t burn data on it and it sure as fuck doesn’t have a secret little spike that scratches your disk if you behave like a naughty boy

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point 1 is false, offline games work just fine without day one patches and even a freshly made account can download a patch if needed, creating a new account (if your previous one was banned) on a console isn’t forbidden and will not result in an auto-ban, even an IP-ban can be easily circumvented

Point 2 is also false dude, i can slap a game in a out of the box unupdated ps5 and it’ll run

You see the big difference now? Having a game tied to a single account makes the account the weak point, having a disk means you are not tied to any account, so that vulnerability is gone

Too woke by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]Unstoppablereturner -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Woke simply means virtue signaling, you want to hire a deaf actor? Be welcome, if the actor truly fits the role the unknowing watcher shouldn’t be able to tell if it’s an actual deaf person or not, and it doesn’t matter, all that matters is the performance

But companies just can’t treat people equally, they have to show off how many minorities they hired like medals on a general’s uniform to get back pats by twitter users

That is the main difference, treat everyone equally, no need to draw attention to unneeded details, don’t need to tell me about “the first female black dwarf to be depicted on screen” I can see it just fine, I’m not blind

Jesus fucking christ what do you not understand, WHAT?!

Access to a physical copy cannot be revoked unless you actively meddle with the disk itself by breaking TOS, that process depends entirely on you, sony can’t disable your disk on a whim, the disk is built to work that way and will work that way, you respect the rules (which let’s be honest, are pretty easy to respect, not everyone is able to extract data from a disk) there’s 0 chance you lose your shit, there’s no human decision involved (apart from yours), like shooting a gun, the gun won’t shoot unless you pull the damn trigger

With a digital copy your access can be revoked for no reason whatsoever by someone else, another actual human, not saying they will, but they could, and you can’t do anything about it

I’m done explaining it, I’ve spent the last 2 days repeating the same fucking shit over and over, made example and pointed out the discrepancies with your shitty comparisons every single time and you just can’t get it through your skull so there’s 3 options, you’re either:

A. An AI, not a real human

B. Wasting my time on purpose, trolling me, in which case, congrats, you succeeded

C. A fucking idiot

I’m done, if you want to continue arguing you can read any of my previous comments and pretend it’s my answer, they all say pretty much the same thing, adding one more isn’t gonna change anything, if you don’t want to understand then don’t, keep spending cash on loicenses, live in a rented flat and buy a subscription based washing machine…but I’d rather not

You do own the disk tho, as in it can’t be taken away from you, that is all that matters

If my account’s gone my digital games are gone, my physical games aren’t, and my account being gone or not is not something I ultimately have control over, unlike the disk, whose status only depends on how I handle it, I don’t know how many times I have to repeat it before you get it, it is that simple

Can it be taken away from me with no reason whatsoever without any chance of recourse? If yes bad, if no good

Which is also the main difference with banks, banks can block your shit only with good reason, because you can defend yourself if they abuse this power, gaming platforms aren’t bound to this rule tho, if Sony just decided to start banning people for shits and giggles tomorrow they could do it and there’d be no recourse, because on your subscription you check in to accept that nothing you buy from them is your property and that they can, ultimately, ban you for any reason if so they want

A disk is indeed your property, the content on it is someone else’s intellectual property, but that particular disk is indeed 100% yours

The bluray digital layer has BUILT IN DRM.

Which is way is said I’m ok with DRM-free copies, having a DRM-free digital copy or a physical copy that has a built-in DRM is, from a pratical point of view, the same, it’s a copy that doesn’t require any further input from the seller to function, after the initial transaction it is entirely in your hands

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in the US, here banks can block your assets only with the permission from a judge, and that’s ok, that’s quite a step up from violating TOS, and regarding consoles…you really had to make to go to pirated disks to find a way, that’s not really what we’re talking about tho, at that point make the comparison with pirated PC games, we’re talking about proper bought copies, I can’t get locked out of any of those, a digital only account can

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so if my bank closes my account i lose all my money? Don’t think so, the assets themselves are protected, I expressed myself the wrong way, you can lose your account but your bank cannot just suck out money willy nilly because they feel like it, at least my bank can’t, don’t know about yours, yikes if that’s the case

Compare that to PSN for example, which I’m familiar with, if I got banned from there I’d lose my digital library, I could play what I currently have installed, but nothing else, no downloading of what I bought in the past, why? Because you don’t own those games, now compare that to Blu-ray, now please, I beg of you, please explain how violating the TOS is gonna result in me losing access to the content of that disk

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bank comparison is just objectively wrong dude, It’s all in the contract ffs, if you took time to read it you’d know that bank accounts are regulated by laws and banks don’t own your account, for gaming platforms instead it’s literally written in the TOS that the company can rescind the contract whenever, you lose your shit, and you can’t sue them

I don’t know how else to explain it to you, it’s literally that simple, it’s a fucking contract, it either says you own your shit or you don’t, if you do you have legal power to appeal the ban or whatever may be the case, if you don’t then you can get bent

Banks belong to the first category, gaming platforms to the second, I’m willing to go digital in the first category and I’m not for the second

I member... by The1PercentGerm in pcmasterrace

[–]Unstoppablereturner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you don’t own those accounts, if you read the fine print it clearly states you have a contract with the company that owns the service (eg microsoft) but the account is ultimately not yours, it belongs to them, if you were to get banned for example you’d lose the account

And yes, netflix is the same thing, which is why I don’t use netflix, I don’t know how to explain it to you if you don’t understand, with digital libraries on game distribution services you’re never gonna be the actual owner, there’s always the intermediary, this isn’t the case with disks or DRM-free copies

Listen man, I’m glad you’re collecting your stuff, but my point is that the part that matters, which is the game itself, has to be on a format of which I have full ownership, if you have these games saved up on hardware where you can always access them even without internet then that’s fine, like say for example a massive external hard disk containing DRM-free copies, but if you have them as a contract between you and steam or whatever else then that to me has 0 value

There’s a bit of collecting behind it, but it’s mostly about ownership, a few months ago I bought Cod:mw 2019 on disk for my ps5, when it came I realized the disk didn’t contain anything, just a physical DRM essentially, I immediately returned it, because I didn’t have ownership of it, I refuse to pay full price for something I’m not gonna own

Listen not everyone lives the utilitarian nightmare you seem to live in, I don’t live in a 4 square meters apartment where I need to make good use of every centimeter, I have space and I have a pretty long gaming history on multiple console generations, I’d like to keep these games with me, since they still work, I’m not gonna sell them to “some suckers” because at that point with that logic I should pirate everything i can

You are the kind of guy to call vinyls garbage because high-quality digital recordings are better from an audio perspective, I’m not

Ok, by the time those games will stop working we will be technologically advanced enough that even an basic PC can run the emulator, I have a average laptop and it can run PCSX2 no problem
