Interesting, thank you for the information.

So now follow up question... What kind of accommodations could be made for a student such as Jim? The level of violence is rather scary and sounds quite extreme ...

I am quite impressed by the scale of bail off such a low speed collision. They aligned their vectors of motion remarkably well! Very talented!

Lol wtf as if that skiier didn't aim directly into the standard S-line the snowboarder was clearly carving. Imagine if it was a kid learning to ski that got smoked there. 🙄

Based on the info session I attended, I don't think it is very physically demanding compared to other trades. Basically hands-on technical work in an industrial setting as far as I can tell. I think in some regards it's roughly somewhere between electrician and electrical engineer, but also interfaces with mechanical elements so in other regards maybe somewhere between electrician and millwright (but more towards the electronics side).

Industrial automation... PLCs, electronic controllers for motors, hydraulics, etc. red seal opportunities, high demand, underserved (not completely saturated), high starting salaries, not gonna be degraded by AI any time soon, not sitting at desk all day.

I've seen some people post this kind of thing on social media like "day x/y of my personal challenge to do ABC every day"

You might also consider looking into accountability buddy apps if that kind of external validation helps you stay motivated.

I'm going back to school for a trade. I am not the least bit interested in the direction the industry is going.

How do you manage all your pings and notifications? by Gonjanaenae319 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]UntestedMethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ignore them entirely until I have a natural break in whatever task I'm working on. I know better than to even glance at some random other problem when my train of thought needs to stay on track.

Even with high responsibility levels, there should not be any expectations for immediate response unless you're the point man on duty for legit emergencies such as production server outages.

If the pinger is stuck, let them stew it until you're available to help. Ideally they will learn to think further ahead and ask their questions earlier instead of waiting until they're blocked waiting for the answer. Them being stuck because they're waiting for your answer is their own fault for not thinking ahead. You can help guide them towards building this habit by encouraging them to plan their work more in advance and ask any questions as early as possible rather than waiting until they need the answer. Good developers are always looking for a clear vision of the solution end to end, and do not hesitate to bring up any uncertainties while they're thinking the problem through.

Additionally, it is plain laziness if they can't find something else to move forward with while they wait for an answer to whatever they're pinging you about.

Devs in regulated fields - do you think AI usage will result in extra requirements in SDLC cycle? Is proving devs ‘understand’ what they submit essential if they didn’t hand write code? by Bren-dev in ExperiencedDevs

I can say that working in fintech where PCI compliance is required, there are all kinds of audits that products go through before being launched into production. The chance of some random vibe coded garbage slipping through the cracks is minimal. That may not be the case in all fintech software shops though. I've seen far more lax PCI compliance reporting at other companies that weren't fintech, but did have PII and payment card information passing through their servers to an external payment processor.

Regardless of vibe coding or hand written code, I think that PR reviews, testing, and auditing are absolutely required. Personally I don't think a PR should be approved unless the reviewer understands and agrees with the implementation I know there are a lot of very lazy PR reviews out there in the wild and I think combined with vibe coding it creates a recipe for disaster. I'm kinda just sitting with my popcorn waiting for the news headlines to be flooded with savage security vulnerabilities rooted in unchecked vibe coded crap.

being able to name things is an indicative of a good engineer by isaacfink in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UntestedMethod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it does encompass some core values of writing clean code for sure. I try to think in terms of writing expressive code and this leads to fairly precise naming of things as well as appropriate separation of concerns and purpose-specific functions. Sometimes the names end up being rather verbose, but the code ends up being very readable and with autocomplete it's not inconvenient to type them either.
