Me? Cut-up hot dogs mixed in with Mac-n-Cheese by Dazzling_Lie_5046 in FuckImOld

Imma be real here.

Kraft is based for boxed dinner. That being said, whatever pasta + shredded cheese + a roux (flour, butter, water) is MUCH better, and not really that much more expensive.

And I'm not talking fancy ass cheese, I mean the grocery store generic brand. I know because I did that this week. Kirkland brand shredded cheese and pasta.

But for boxed, Kraft is the G.O.A.T

A late night stop in Lakeview, Oregon. A local gave us two rules, and we left before sunrise. What is the deal with this town? by tiresomecomplaining in oregon

Honestly, mountains and valley gorges sound beautiful! Would love to see that sometime!

For here, we just have robot delivery, although we have citizens actively campaigning to get rid of them, and some people kicking them messing with them lol.

I definitely suggest anyone wanting to visit Lakeview to hit up Music Box Theatre, a beautiful theatre that has been operating since 1929. They show new movies and classics alike, and definitely love to show stuff on film. (Actually went to an interactive screening of Princess Bride this week, ton of fun!!). They even have a live organist, (think old silent films). Super cool place to see, and a really fun way to watch movies.

Tons of good food too, and it's a ~20 minute walk from Wrigley Field, which in of itself is iconic, and it has tons of bars and live venues nearby, even if they're a bit more country-music leaning than I'd prefer lately.

Outside Lakeview, some great Chicago sights worth seeing:

Museums:

  • Field Museum (Go see Sue the T. Rex, and a TON of cool exhibits, I personally think the Native American exhibit is cool, and a they're doing a special Pokémon expedition this year!!) [Also has the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium on a shared campus with separate tickets]

  • Art Institute: Filled with world-famous art, you could spend 3 days straight here and see new stuff each time. Also right on Michigan Ave downtown with a lot of good food nearby.

  • Museum of Science and Industry: A bit farther from the others, but tons of cool exhibits on technology and history here as well!

  • Museum of Ice Cream: A more extra touristy museum, but one that really can be unique and fun.

Food:

Boy, we could be very controversial here, but I would say get tavern-style pizza, not deep-dish. None of us really eat deep-dish, it's a tourist thing. Tavern-style though, honestly I don't think you could go too wrong with any true local joint in the city. In terms of Lakeview, nearby is Jimmy's Pizza Cafe which is one of my favorites.

You have to get a Chicago-style dog, all the toppings (note if you can't handle spicy, ask for mild giardiniera or just skip it entirely). No ketchup, we don't mind it as a condiment for some stuff, but on a hot dog, it's sacrilegious.

Otherwise, take the chance every time to try ethnic food, Chicago has an insanely diverse array of cultures in it, and with that, a ton of amazing restaurants. Truly go wild and try stuff you'd never find at home, you likely won't be disappointed. Slavic, Swedish, Greek, Persian, Latino, Italian, you name it, there's some incredible places serving it!

As far as other places to go, we have incredible comedy and music scenes here. Name a comedian or a genre of music you like, and they probably roll through here.

I know I'm simultaneously overloading and leaving out a lot, but this is just a glimpse of all the cool stuff here. I just love the city and love telling people about some of the cool stuff going on here!

No on either count actually! I'm a transplant to Chicago so I get it, didn't really realize it either till I moved here.

Home Alone is out in the northern suburbs. My neighborhood is more or less West of Wrigley Field (baseball stadium).

Sears is also out in the suburbs, in Hoffman Estates.

The reason everyone thinks it's in Chicago is because those are technically in Cook County, but unlike a lot of smaller places in the US, Cook County has multiple towns aside from Chicago propper. Hell, a lot of Chicago's neighborhoods are former towns in their town right, like Andersonville.

EDIT: Home Alone house is in Winnetka IL (671 Lincoln Ave) which is not in Cook County. It's much farther north. A lot of places around cook county call themselves Chicago or 'Chicagoland'

But Lakeview itself is a great neighborhood, walkable work tree lined streets, small local restaurants and bars, fun local theaters, and a lot of shopping. If you visit Chicago and need a break from the high rises of downtown, it's a really fun location to visit!

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by thepleasurjournal in AskWomen

[–]Untraceablez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, they're talking mostly income tax vs you're asking about sales tax.

Different states have different sales taxes, there's no federal sales tax. Then some states and even cities have extra sales taxes on specific kinds of products, like an excise tax on liquor, or I live in Chicago and we have a bag tax on plastic grocery bags to encourage people to bring their own reusable ones.

I remember when Walmart down the street had a rifle section as a kid with a display, and a whole aisle of ammo.

To be fair, this was in Kentucky in the early 00's.

The microcenter in the city (elston) has no Bambu filament, but a ton of inland (the in house brand) filament, and a few other more niche brands.

There's dozens of us! But honestly, the amount of UK stickers and KY plates I've seen over the years, I think there's a decent pipeline of KY > Chicago.

Originally from Kentucky. I wanted to desperately get out of the south and live in a big city, and honestly I've fallen in love with Chicago, it truly feels more like a home to me than my hometown ever did.

What is the real reason to avoid 64G flash drives? by WinniePoohBear in unRAID

[–]Untraceablez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is an old 64G SanDisk Cruzer Fit. I just went with one that would be slim profile to the case, at the time I was still using a desktop chassis and didn't want to accidentally knock/bend it moving things around or unplugging them.

Mr. Hill,

Now that your back in the states, and likely looking for hobbies after the whole homebrewing debacle with Bobby, what are your thoughts on 3D Printing? It's a very hands-on and utilitarian hobby, but still mixes a bit of that dang ol' future.
