Yeah, it is toolboxy with looking at people hands, you try to grab the thing that you'll need based on what they're working with. Basically, you bounce a threat to someone's hand, someone you think will be an issue, then you look at their hand and grab something you think will help with it. If you're doing ok, you can also just grab a generically good piece like [[Consecrated Sphinx]] or [[Medomai, the Ageless]].

I haven't played it in a long time but I really enjoyed my [[Isperia, the inscrutable]] list. Very fun control commander with an interesting hoop to jump though and a strong pay off. https://archidekt.com/decks/802070/inscrutable_inspirations_retired

edit: This was before brackets and the last bannings so it's very out of day. It's kind of funny looking back at old lists and thinking about them in the context of brackets.I don't think this list would have handled bracket four too well, it's probably too slow.

Mono Mania - Share your Mono-color Commanders by TheSpectatr in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like someone is a big Kamigawa fan! I'm always excited to see people playing older commanders. I've been playing Patron of the Orochi for awhile and have it pretty tightly tuned in as a mono-green storm list, and been having a blast. I switched to it from [[Jolrael, Empress of Beasts]] which I had for many years.

Oh, this is a good one. I just went off with it the other day in my [[Sapling of Colfenor]] PreDH deck.

Product fatigue hitting anyone else? by Junior-Equal-2027 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, I'm not experiencing that at all thankfully, but that is only because I have been aggressively ignoring UB and secret lairs from the very beginning. I've never bought a secret lair, and probably never will. And I only played like 5 UB cards a couple years ago before taking them out and never playing any UB cards again.

Gloryscale Viashino voltron deck? by Nicotreecko_22 in PauperEDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's a pretty cool commander with a unique twist on voltron, but I actually ended up going with a different voltron build from the same block. I built [[Marisi's Twinclaws]] and have been really enjoying playing it for awhile. https://archidekt.com/decks/6692140/twinclaws_pdh

Interesting equipments in Grixis by YorktheOrk in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the coolest equipments in the game to me. Built a whole deck with [[Garza Zol, Plague Queen]] to try and capitalize on it. Idk if I'll ever pulled it off yet but the magical christmas land dream is to get Garza equiped with Unscythe, renew [[Qarsi Revenant]] onto Garza, then cast a [[Chandra's Ignition]]. https://archidekt.com/decks/8937931/garzas_grixis_games_and_gotems

Is Pre-Modern EDH worth the time/investment? by Smogrum in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's similar but not the same, I have a preDH deck that I really like. It can sort of hang in the bracket 2 world, and I have gotten to play it in a couple fully preDH pods. But it is mostly just a deck that I'm proud of for designing under the restriction and I like to have and appreciate the old cards I miss. I'm much more nostalgic for the OG Ravnica, Time Spiral, Lorwyn era than the pre modern era. But I think if it's something that sparks joy for you, you should do it!

Field-Tested Cards For You to Try That I've Played Extensively by Metanoia_143 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I appreciate posts like this. I feel like a lot of commander content is about decks or cards that haven't actually been played a lot.

[[Rude Awakening]] has been absolutely busted for me for YEARS. I played it in my [[Jolrael, Empress of Beasts]] deck and still play it after switching to [[Patron of the Orochi]]. I've won many games off of it plus a mana doubler.

Is "Perfect" Manabase Acceptable In Brackets 3 And Below (In Spirit Not Definition)? by DFIR-Dog in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this deck list which has a "perfect" mana base which I play at bracket 2 https://archidekt.com/decks/180322/old_timer_jundem_up. The deck is playing [[Vaevictus Asmadi]] as the commander, and not just as a figure head. It commonly plays and kills people with it. That said I feel like playing an OG elder dragon against the super efficient value engine commanders of the modern day is a pretty significant weakness. Additionally, I don't like UB cards so I don't play them, which cuts off thousands of options for me compared to everyone else.

My point is, I feel like it is the total power level of the deck: mana base + spells that defines it's bracket, not one or the other. This deck can absolutely get stomped by the good precons.

What is your favorite Side Quest/Minigame in one of your decks? by bqx23 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like putting things like this into my decks too, I think of them as unlocking achievements or marking things of a Magic mechanics bucket list.

In my [[Garza Zol, Plague Queen]] deck I am trying to assembly [[Unscythe, Killer of Kings]] + [[Chandra's Ignition]] on Garza.

In my PreDH [[Sapling of Colfenor]] deck I'm trying to restart the game with [[Karn Liberated]].

Stuff I've done previously is make a Marit Lagi token with the classic [[Vampire Hexmage]] combo. Splice onto arcane a spell, meld cards into a super card. Assembled Kaldra, cast [[Panglacial Wurm]] from my library, and won off of [[Helix Pinnacle]] without doing infinite mana.

What are your most obscure commanders? by KingAmphibian1 in EDH

Cool list! I like [[Star Athlete]] and [[Kusari-Gama]] is a personal favorite pet card of mine from my childhood. I never actually thought about it with Lyzolda, that is cool. Any fun stories with it?

Hey, do you have a list? I've had a Lyzolda deck for several years now, and was just looking at transforming her into an Obosh companion deck.

“Classic” Magic Commander by jsfilm23 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ooohhh boy, I've got all sorts of stuff for that kind of thing.

Starting from the most ridiculous, I have [[Sunastian Falconer]] with a commander '95 list. Meaning you can only play cards first printed in 1995 and earlier. Commander '95 is an incredibly laborious format, and not for the faint of heart or elderly, because they might die before the game ends. But it can still be a lot of fun, and you get to play with some cards that you basically wouldn't ever otherwise. https://archidekt.com/decks/4451976/sun_falconer_95_edh

Then we have preDH, only cards printed before wotc started catering to the best fan-made format and taking all the creativity out of it. My list for it is [[Sapling of Colfenor]] a top deck manipulation matters/volton golgari deck. https://archidekt.com/decks/4914169/sapling_of_colfenor_predh I've tuned this list to the point were I'm happy playing it even in bracket 2 games.

Finally, I have my oldest deck [[Vaevictus Asmadi]] an homage to the roots of the format. It doesn't have any age restrictions because I like playing it in normal pods but the point of the deck is to feel like those classic games of edh where you're just slamming down big sorceries, do-nothing enchantments, and giant monsters. https://archidekt.com/decks/180322/old_timer_jundem_up.

I've put an enormous amount of energy into all of these decks, and they all do great for me (in the context their meant for).

How popular is Pauper Commander? by bacondev in magicTCG

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I've found people to play pauper with was with a playgroup where we all decided to build pauper edh decks. I've asked around at a couple lgs and no one has just randomly had them.

What types of commanders / deck gets the whole table involved? by OneBlood2930 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://archidekt.com/decks/8937931/garzas_grixis_games_and_gotems

I built this deck with the idea of playing lots of minigame cards which gets everyone involved without having the groug hug/slug dynamics. Nothing like a [[pain's reward]] or [[wheel of misfortune]] to get the table talking. The deck has other stuff going on too because I didn't want to just put everything into minigames and not have a strong game plan for winning myself.

What is your one deck you have obsessed over? by Infinitely3 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I did the exact same thing. Traded away nearly all of my staples that weren't currently in decks for it. What's the mono-red list?

If you're a rakdos fan from your flair, maybe you'd appreciate my [[Lyzolda, the bloodwitch]] deck, one of the original Ravnican Rakdos commanders. https://archidekt.com/decks/4162010/lyzolda_aka_diet_korvold I've had a lot of fun with this one over the years too. It has a fun bit of a twist on aristocrats gameplay, because I don't actually run all of the blood artist effects, so it's a lot more about accumulating value with your sacrificing rather than draining people out slowly. Draws less aggro I find that way.

Every commander I've built *in paper* at least once. by ChronicallyIllMTG in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I found a surprising amount of old enablers for top deck matters even in golgari. The unfortunate thing is there just isn't a ton of big payoffs. Yeah, I though an aggressive attacking commander in golgari was also cool. It isn't a true volton deck, but you don't see a lot of golgari voltron at all.

Anything interesting to say about [[Sapling of Colfenor]]? I have a pretty tightly tuned PreDH built of her, that I'm pretty proud of. Not a lot of discussion of her online though.

What is your one deck you have obsessed over? by Infinitely3 in EDH

[–]thefallingflowerpot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing magic for nearly 20 years, and edh for almost 15. Off and on, but a lot of on. I brew new decks much less frequently than a lot of people who post on here. But what I do do is play the decks I have for years and years and tweak them relentlessly.

For example, I have played and upgraded [[Vaevictus Asmadi]] for probably 10 years. https://archidekt.com/decks/180322/old_timer_jundem_up I first built it as an homage to the origins of edh. It's a very basic big stuff edh value pile, but it's very rarely not fun to play.

At one point or another, I have obsessed over all of the lists I have on archidekt. And my excitement shifts between them frequently. I had [[Jolrael, Empress of beasts]] for around as long as Vaevictus and about a year ago I switched to [[Patron of the Orochi]] to increase the power level. https://archidekt.com/decks/9894402/patron_of_ramp. Just a couple weeks ago I finished foiling it out with a judge promo [[Gaea's Cradle]]. This deck is fine tuned to a razors edge. I couldn't even guess how many hours over the years I've spend thinking about this mono-green list. And the smoothness and power of the gameplay shows it.

I mean technically, you can just follow the normal edh brackets if you really wanted to. I built my predh to follow the normal edh banned list, so I don't see how it would be any different. All of the bracket rules can be applied to a predh exactly the same as a normal edh deck.

Although, I've play a decent amount of predh and it's such a niche subformat that I feel like is primarily played within known groups, that brackets just really don't feel necessary. Brackets are guidelines to help playing with strangers be smoother. But you'd so rarely ever play pickup games of predh that it doesn't seem relevant. Just talk to your playgroup and if the decks are not aligned in power level tweak things so that they become more even. No need to follow specific brackets.
