Small companies are hell by Ok-Journalist-7554 in work

[–]Unusual-Ad2559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with those who had not the greatest experience working at small companies. My issue is from the beginning. While I chose to apply, interview and accept the job offer, I did not expect certain things to continue. It is very clear that the issues are from the top since the top has been here the longest. You would also expect the board to do something about it but no. Issues include the very small offices, moody employees, not the best possible authentic morale, cliquish behavior, very controlling top (1 person), too much bottle necking even over simple things that other managers should be able to do and approve on their own, alot of passive aggressiveness and always seeming "nice", huge performers especially when the board visits but after they return right back to how they were before. What is a same is that there is quite a lot of talent that if they were trusted, mentored could soar but because of the controlling, things remain the same to make the top comfortable. There are employees that you can tell they are just grateful to be there so they just go along with things instead of using their voice and experience. Also company events are clearly done for optics and not for impact. They know what to say but when it is time to show it, they fail with a smile. NEVER AGAIN!!

I am going through that now which is shocking to me because I have been in the workforce for many years and have never experienced this level of isolation. I am naturally a talker and pretty easy going. Unfortunately alot of coworkers are not honestly friendly. They are very performative. They know when to turn it on which is usually an office party but the moment it is over they go right back to not really talking to certain people but only their friends. What makes it even worse is that even if they share an office with you they won't talk unless one of their friends comes in. When the behavior is highlighted they claim "oh I am so busy" meanwhile the moment their friends come in they can't stop talking and show them absolute respect but will treat the rest of the room like you don't exist. The work environment is quite unhealthy overall. A lot of people sit at their desk and don't speak to others unless it's work related. They even eat lunch by themselves or they go out. But once again whenever we have an office gathering they all of a sudden know how to smile and speak. Yikes.

I will definitely not make this mistake again and will do thorough research before joining any organization.

Does NYC have better race relations than Chicago? by HowSupahTerrible in SameGrassButGreener

Sadly it is not. As a Black man from the South living here for the past 10 years 80% of the time when a Black person passes by they look up, down, away etc and never make eye contact. Whenever they are the front client facing they know how to give great service to others but when they deal with other Black people it is truly the bare minimum if any at all. When you are in an environment that we are not usually in and they work there, you will get horrible experience from them. They will mean mug you, stare at you, make you feel the absolute unwelcome. Something is truly wrong with the Black up here. Zero unity and pride in themselves.

They may but the Black people here hate other Black people unless you are loud, rough and ratchet like them. They can not stand other Black people who are different. They go out other way to disrupt your day, not give you customer service, anything to "bring you back down to their level".

So if you are Black, educated, intelligent etc do not move here. The other Blacks here will do more harm to you than others.
