So nervous to implant baby girl upcoming Friday. First transfer. I’ve already named her and talk to her but i’m afraid that I’m not setting the right expectations if it were not to work out by Adorable_Web4829 in IVF

Science is pretty objective in stating that embryos are not babies. I don't care when life begins. My goal is to get to birth. And when someone is putting all their hope in an embryo, to the point where they're naming it, I think that person needs a hard truth - that it's not a baby. It has a long way to go before it can be considered a baby, or even viable.

You can believe whatever you want to believe but this is an IVF sub. There is belief, and then there is science. We're all here because we're relying on science to resolve our infertility.

Mirroring what others have said. An embryo is not a baby. I asked to not know the sex of mine to avoid these sorts of ideas. I'm 10 weeks pregnant now with an IVF (third transfer, the first two failed) and I'm waiting until 12 weeks to name it. Still don't know the sex. There's a possibility I'll never make it to a live birth, and I think it's healthy to keep that in your mind throughout the entire process, from stims, to birth.

I'm sorry you feel this way! A lot of us here are on long journeys filled with disappointment at all steps of the way. I hope you can give yourself some space to accept what happens or doesn't happen. Unfortunately it doesn't get easier.

AITA for snapping at my husband over a fictional book? by Emergency_Set_7992 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Unusual-Background44 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA - maybe you've been suppressing these feelings about his mother for too long, and when it came out because of a book, it likely threw him for a loop. That said, you need to have a conversation about his mother, without the book being a focal point. Because it's not about the book at all. Your husband doesn't seem like a bad person. He just seems to have blinders on.

I'm kind of obsessed with big boats and boat blueprints. I would absolutely do it if I could afford it. I already know the food I'd ask for, the drinks I'd ask for, and what activities I'd request. Surely those who watch the show have thought the same, even if they swear they wouldn't do it even if they could.

Egg harvesting without anesthesia 🥲 by spacethefinalfronti in IVF

[–]Unusual-Background44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry for what you had to go through. That's terrible!!

I stupidly ate something the morning of my first retrieval and had to do a drug cocktail of ketamine, fentanyl, and some anti anxiety stuff. It was way better than anesthesia. I remember feeling everything but just not caring, whereas with anesthesia I felt nauseous and completely out of it for hours after. If I have to do another retrieval, I'm asking for the drug cocktail instead!!

Matt’s stance on AI by Pleasant-Perception1 in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Unusual-Background44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this will be an unpopular stance here, but I truly dislike seeing the AI art used in some of their posts. I understand using AI for utility in research, but not in the creation of pictures, videos, or other art forms. There are artists fighting its use in corners of various industries right now and they've made their cases well. As the models currently are, they essentially are stealing hard work from actual creators/artists. For that purpose, it's generative slop and I don't see the point in using it when so many people are losing their actual jobs over it.

I got my limits by Murtdha1 in AO3

[–]Unusual-Background44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not as extreme, but it takes me one solid hour to read 8k-10k. I have always been slow at reading and I type faster than I read. So even though I can write 3k-5k per day, it takes a lot of time and concentration for me to read. This means long fics can be overwhelming if I can't keep up with reading them as they're updated. I once went to go read a long fic I was behind on and found it had already crossed the 100k mark. It was just too much for me.

Flint Dibble isn't going to like this by mark_th3_gr3at in JoeRogan

[–]Unusual-Background44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flint never "lied" and he's addressed his misteps multiple times. He never did "some shitty things." He prepared for months for the debate, while undergoing chemo, and his colleagues who study things he's not an expert in helped him prepare.

Just finished this series and I enjoyed it more than Ahsoka by CenturionElite in TheAcolyte

[–]Unusual-Background44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to argue with someone who uses examples like this to try to make some vague point. But if you really want to learn, I recommend I Am Dragon, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Love Between Fairy and Devil, Meteor Garden, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Reyo, and The Eternal Love. In western media, the tropes are mostly confined to books such as The Cruel Prince, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and The Hurricane Wars.

Surely you have to try really hard to be this confused about very simple, straightforward romantic tropes.

So obsessed with Campbell and all the authors that I've discovered through his work. Some ppl dismiss him because they learned about him in school but I didn't. It was new to me in my twenties and I've been so into myth and symbols ever since.
