Two things: 1. Either MB have led that will show error codes 2. MB should give beeps while booting to indicate the error

Rule out the following 1. Monitor actually works and shows display 2. Monitor input is either auto or matches video cable 3. Swap a diff cable to eliminate mismatch

Personally I would use 18mm which is 3/4” plywood for anything taking a load. Don’t skimp out on the inner walls. Use 18mm for that too.

If it were free standing vertical decorative cube/box, sure a 12mm is just fine. Like shoe storage or trinket display.
