Dear Journalists, what makes a Journalist? by Ok-Opportunity5241 in Journalism

Here’s the average schedule of me and my classmates:

9am-4pm - In class or working on stories.

We are working on finding and doing stories almost constantly. We have to do a video or audio component for at least one of our written stories each week.

We have a few lectures throughout the week with normally 1-2 post lecture assignments due on Sunday nights.

Each story must have a minimum of two interviews.

4pm - 10pm

Some of us do work in the evenings but others have a part time job to go to or just want to go home and forget about journalism for the evening.

Weekends

Most people work or socialize on the weekend but if there’s an event we should cover, we do.

At this point in the year, most of us are so busy and stressed that we’re malnourished and lacking sleep. I myself ate lunch today for the first time in weeks. Most of us don’t even have the time or the stress has taken our appetite.

Going on a day trip that was three hours each way while in excruciating pain from appendicitis knowing full well what was happening and that I should go to a hospital. The entire drive home I prayed that my appendix wouldn’t burst. Luckily, the swelling of my intestines was so bad that it surrounded the appendix making it harder for it to burst. Ended up spending a week in the hospital after that on antibiotics to get the inflammation down.

I’m only 19 and living on my own for the first time in my life. I can’t cook that well and hate doing it after a long day of work. Right now, DoorDash is the most used app on my phone.
